Chapter 20: Cat and Mouse (Part 2)

"The key must have fallen up there," Vi said, staring at the large hole above, her brow furrowed. "We need to climb up and find it." Easier said than done. The hole was three to four meters high, and the walls around were covered in moss, providing no grip. Moreover, Vi and Caitlyn were both handcuffed, bound like birds with broken wings, unable to fly no matter how hard they tried. Unfortunately, the land of Runeterra held no tales of birds that flew together; even if it did, the two of them wouldn't cooperate. Caitlyn wasn't keen on removing the handcuffs just yet. She had worked hard to catch her prisoner; how could she just let her escape?

"Let's take a break; you're still injured. Once my colleagues find us, it'll be fine."

"Oh? I didn't expect you to be so naive," Vi sneered. "Don't you know what Piltover's enforcers are like? They can't be bothered to check the sewers, and with these twisted paths, we've been running for over half an hour and ended up at the lowest point. By the time they find us, our corpses will have been gnawed by rats — don't worry, it won't take long. Once we're completely out of strength, lying on the ground unable even to move, the rats will slowly gather and start feasting on your body. At that time, you'll still be able to distinctly feel the pain..."

Hearing all this from Vi, Caitlyn felt as if she were listening to a ghost story and was creeped out. She was a brave enforcer, but that didn't mean she wanted to be eaten alive by rats. At this thought, she couldn't help but complain, "If it weren't for you running recklessly into the sewers, we wouldn't be in this situation."

"My fault? If you didn't chase me, would I have run?" Vi retorted.

"If you didn't run, would I have chased?"

Neither of them was particularly willful; they knew arguing wouldn't help and would only waste energy. Vi and Caitlyn fell silent for a long time, finally sighing in unison.

"Sigh..."

Caitlyn moved her lips, hesitated for a moment, and finally spoke to comfort them both, "It's okay, they will come looking for me. My mother... is a councilor in Piltover."

"A noble lady?" Vi was surprised. "Haha, an uptown girl becoming an enforcer? What made you decide to do that?"

"This has been my dream since I was little."

"Your dream is to lock innocent people in Stillwater Hold? Just to get them out of the way for your uptown lords, you throw us into that lightless place for life?" Vi's emotions were stirred. She had just gotten out of Stillwater Hold and knew what that place was like. It was more despairing than hell, and enforcers like Caitlyn, to her, were nothing less than the devil's minions, leading the way to damnation.

"That's because they broke the law!" Caitlyn argued with reason. To her, someone like Vi, who disregarded the law and disrupted others' peaceful lives, was the real scoundrel. It was beyond comprehension that Vi looked down on enforcers.

"You don't even consider why they broke the law! If they could just fill their stomachs, drink clean water, breathe fresh air, ninety-nine percent of the people in the undercity would gladly be law-abiding citizens!" Vi, who had been around Justin for a long time and had been exposed to quite a bit of advanced knowledge from a young age, knew, even if she didn't fully understand, who the real enemy was: "If you truly cared about so-called law and justice, the first ones you should seize are those lofty Piltover councilors. They are the root of all evil — including your mother!"

This argument seemed endless. Vi and Caitlyn weren't particularly experienced people, and their living environments were worlds apart, making mutual understanding impossible; they could only confront each other with their differing views. The last bit of their energy was nearly exhausted in the quarrel.

"Forget it, I won't argue with you. You'll never understand our sorrow," Vi turned her head and started to walk forward, intent on finding a way out herself. Though she knew Justin would surely come back for her, she wasn't the type to wait around for rescue. Unfortunately, she forgot she was still handcuffed to Caitlyn.

"Where are you going?"

"Looking for an exit!"

"Piltover's sewer system is extremely complex..."

"I know that better than you!"

Vi, with her already short temper, was at her breaking point after all the trouble they'd been through. Right now, she wanted nothing more than to cut off her own hand. Seeing this, Caitlyn could only give up on waiting and follow her. In any case, they had to find an exit first.
