I woke well rested to another beautiful morning. Even though I didn't have much do to, I enjoyed my time watching the outside. I couldn't hear the sounds of the forest up here, which made me a little sad, but I could watch the daily lives of all the animals in the forest. It was quite cold in the cave, and even though it didn't hurt me, it was a bit uncomfortable. I got out of my cave and flew to the eastern side of the mountain, overlooking the lake. The sun warmed my scales as I waited for the forest to wake up.
Not too long after I settled down, I heard a thundering roar from the north east. 'A challenger has finally arrived' I thought as i flew to meet my foe.
Staring straight at me was a manticore. It was as tall as my shoulders and had a body about 5m long. It had the face of a human, the body of a lion, bat-like wings, and the tail of a scorpion. Manticore venom is one of the most deadly toxins in existence, it could even cause me some pain. Luckily, it wouldn't be able to pierce my scales. This might be an opportunity to test my fighting skills, so I'll try to weaken my attacks.

'It wasnt intelligent to recognize a name, so this encounter will be very simple' I thought as I descended to the ground. The trees would obstruct both of us as we fought, but we were strong enough that they didn't slow us down much. The manticore looked me in the eyes once I landed, before he tensed his muscles and pounced at me. I quickly dodged to the side, checking where his tail and wings were so I wouldn't gouged. Again, they wouldn't actually hurt me, but I still wanted to practice my technique.
After leaping past me, the manticore's tail lashed at my face, so I hit it aside with my hand. Seeing its attack fail, the manticore got even more angry. Spinning towards me, it roared and then ran at me, crossing the already short distance in an instant. Next was a barrage of claw attacks with the occasional wing blow. Its tail wouldn't quite reach past its head, so I didn't have to worry about it. At first, I used both my hands to block the attacks, but I slowly refined my movements so I could block them with only one hand. After practicing enough, I slipped my claws between his strikes to cut at his face. Seeing my claws about to rip his eyes out, he quickly jumped backward to evade them. Not wanting to waste his chance, I followed him as soon as he moved. As there were many trees, I had more maneuverability on the ground than he had in the air. I ran forward and positioned myself before where the manticore would land so that I could cut open his undefended chest. However, as the manticore fell, it used its tail to distract me and allow it to land safely. We then resumed our claw battle, massacaring the poor plant life near us. I then noticed that the manticore's wings were still up, not folded on its back like mine were. Seeing this, I formed a plan.
A few moments later, I hit the ground to launch dust and cut grass into the air to distract the manticore before running to the side of its body. I was now positioned under its wings, so the manticore would would find it hard to hit me with its tail. I swiftly attacked with my claws, leaving five long, deep cuts that bled profusely. I think I even hit bone in one of them. However, to my surprise, the manticore didn't give up, and instead swung back to face me, biting at my neck. In response to its ugly head flying at me, I curled my hand into a fist and punched it in the face, knocking a few teeth loose. They would regrow, but any brain damage I caused was permanent. Again, my expectations were wrong. The manticore immediately steadied itself before launching at me again. It should either have fainted from lack of blood or given up by now, yet it continued attacking. My best guess was that it really couldn't afford to loose this territory, maybe because I had claimed a large amount of it, so it was fighting to the death. However, I had finished all the practicing I wanted for today, and was getting bored. I used a little of my real speed to punch it in the face again, almost throwing it to the ground. It still didn't give up though, and got up again and charged at me. That was my final warning, so I will end this fight now. I then ran straight towards it, and when I reached its face I used my claws to cleave its head in half. Sadly, I had to use wind magic to make my claws sharp enough. Maybe I should try to sharpen my claws more, It seems that average rocks are not strong enough to help me sharpen my claws anymore. For the first time in ages, I actually felt a bit hungry. It was probably because of all the travelling I had done away from a ley line intersection. Luckily, I had a meal ready right in front of me. Only te tail of a manticore is poisonous, so it wasnt dangerous to me. I had seen humans cook their food on fire before, and I was quite intrigued. I tried it, but it didn't taste much different and was a lot of effort do I stopped doing it. I nimbly cut some meat from the manticore's side before having some to eat. It was surprisingly not horrible. After eating my fill, I burnt the rest to ashes, cleaning the forest. all that was left was its mana stone, which I almost forgot about. All monsters have one, and they allow them to control mana easier than humans can. Depending on a monsters overall strength and ability with magic, the size, clarity and colour of a mana stone changes. Intelligent monsters can also drain mana stones to increase their own strength. Not wanting anything to go to waste, I drained the mana stone until it turned to dust before flying back to my cave. There were no other challengers, which I was quite surprised about, as I had taken a large amount of land. Maybe it all belonged to that manticore? Well, I dont really care. I'm just happy I get to live here now.
Even though it was still day when I got back to my cave, I went to sleep anyway to celebrate.
