(Trisha Pov) Chapter 75
Trisha rode along the road. The brown mare she rode shook its mane and nickered. She heard a faint rustling and clink of metal as the prisoner moved. She glanced over her shoulder, the young man strapped behind her with hemp rope on her horse's back.
In her opinion, it was a fitting form of transportation for the Demon. She bit her lip as she stare at his blood soaked white hair and back to his stunning red skin. Trisha kicked herself for believing his lies. She wanted to save him, but she was sure he was lying. She hoped he was telling the truth. She hoped that it really wasn't him who killed all of her friends.
Sighing, she glanced to the three soldiers in gold armour, and then to her long-time friend Eliya. How could she do this to Reskeme? How could she have put someone who she thought of as a friend in the clutches of the high inquisitor, and that damned noble?
Trisha clenched her sword hilt, feeling her knuckles pop. She would sort this out, and if the noble was framing Reskeme, she would get him out of it. If it was Reskeme lying, she would let him die like the murder he was.
She shifted in her saddle as the young mans eyes open. The young man blinked rapidly as he swivelled his head from side to side.
Trisha whispered, "Stop moving, or they will hear you."
When Reskeme stopped his shifting she stare into his flickering green eyes. Trisha shivered, all that she could see was her betrayal reflecting at her.
She gestured with her head down the dirt road, On the road in front of her was the rest of the group. They were all riding in single file with her in the rear.
Reskeme whispered, " Where am I?"
Trisha said, "We tied you onto the back of my horse, don't worry, they will not kill you just yet."
Reskeme scowled, he hissed, " I didn't Destroy the guild!"
Trisha glared at him. She said, " The evidence is pretty convincing. The only person I have ever heard of who can use green fire is you."
Trisha's voice rose" I returned home to green fire burning the guild and horrifically burned bodies! What was I supposed to think?. The only person who knew what happened was missing."
Reskeme said, "I'm sorry, it scared me to return. I thought everyone died."
Trisha said, " Then why did you run away from me at the merchant's guildhall?"
Reskemes brow furrowed. He really looked adorable, with his white hair frizzy and dangling towards the ground.
Trisha said," I didn't believe you killed them, until more people started dying around the city. You want to know what killed them? Green fire killed them!"
Reskeme said," Can you let me out of these chains?. I will help you find this other demon."
Trisha scoffed. she said, " You idiot, you confessed you were a demon right in front of the inquisitor. Do you think he will let you go?"
Reskeme said," What happed to Carley? and did you guys kill dusty? I hope you did!"
Trisha said," Our good friend dusty took the gold and left. He said something about moving to the capitol city. The woman Carley, we let her go and left her back on the trail."
Reskeme smiled at her words, staring up at her. He rustled underneath the ropes tying him to the saddle.
He said," this is so uncomfortable can you at least let me sit up."
Trisha thought about it for a moment. He could grab her from behind and possibly choke her with his manacles. Did he think she was an idiot?
Shaking her head, Trisha said," Nice try! Im not going to give you any chance to escape. That is why we bound you to the back of my saddle face down."
Reskeme groaned. He said," These manacles are grinding on my wrist, can you loosen them?"
Trisha sighed. she said," Are you going to keep bugging me until we get back to the city?"
Reskeme chuckled, he said," Well, I have nothing better to do until we reach the city. How much longer until we get there?"
Trisha felt her lips turning into a smile, but immediately covered it with a scowl. She directed her anger down at the bouncing young man. Damn him for his lies.
Reskeme said," I like your armour, It makes you look imposing and deadly, a powerful warrior."
Trisha glared daggers at his white-toothed grin, He thought she was imposing and deadly? Now he was trying to get on her good side. He was lying, Even after saying that the compliment still made her feel better.
Trisha said," Well, you look like a pig, tied and ready for the cook pot."
Reskeme's face fell, turning his head to the ground. Trisha felt bad for saying that. He was going to get burned at some sort of Divine alter when they got back.
Trisha said," If its any comfort, I am not working for that overbearing noble. I'm working for the inquisitor. I like the Goddess of war, who knows I might join it to hunt down demons for a living. Kelvin said they pay three gold a month if you can make it through training."
Reskeme stare at her mouth agape, he said," Three gold? that is crazy. Where do I sign up? "
Trisha laughed, she said," Well at least you still are trying to get out of this mess, I can respect that."
Reskeme said," You still think im lying, don't you?"
Trisha scowled, She said," Of course I think you are lying. A man going to his death will say anything to be free."
Reskeme furrowed his brows before he went silent for a few minutes. The clip clop and of her mare's hooves was relaxing as she focused on the uneven road ahead.
Breaking the peaceful silence, Reskeme said, "If you check for reports from the guards, there will be killings in the city. I heard about people dying while I was in the army. There was no way I could have been killing those people."
Trisha said," Who would I talk to? I dont know any of the guards."
Reskeme looked her in the eye as a smile formed on his face. He said, "When we get to the city, go to the garrison. Ask for weapon master Katherine, tell her you need the information to protect your friend Reskeme.
Trisha laughed, She said," A weapon master? How on Laurentia do you know a weapon master?"
Reskeme said," She is my trainer, it's how I have been learning to fight."
Trisha sighed, She said," I would think you are lying to me, but I watched you kill that guard by yourself. That is impressive. I have to use my magic to beat them whenever we spar, I end up loosing."
Reskemes red cheeks turned a darker shade. He said," Well, to be honest, I got lucky. I doubt doing that trick will work a second time."
Reskeme said, "What kind of magic do you have, anyway? You never told me."
Trisha held up her hand to halt his next words she said," Im not going to tell you that. I will think on what you said."
Maybe she was an idiot, she thought, he might be telling the truth."
Trishas watched the trees roll by, thinking about what Reskeme had just said. His words sounded sincere, but she couldn't tell for sure. They were crossing a dried creek bed when her horse stepped on a rock. Its front right hoof slipped and Trisha leaned to the side. The horse lifted its leg and sent a small rock into Reskemes shoulder. Reskeme yelped in surprise. Trisha couldn't help but laugh out loud and alerting the rest of the group.
A hotty voice said," Mage! Is the Demon awake. Who are you talking to?"
Trisha scowled as the nobleman's bright red hat flew from his head and dangled from his shoulders. The Young Noble turned his horse around and galloped towards her. His horse slid to a stop as he pulled on the reins and bumped into her mount. Trisha scowled through the dust as her horse pranced to the side of the path, rubbing her leg on a tree.
Trisha said, "Don't do that. There is a reason we are moving slowly, that is so we don't breath dust the entire time we are riding back."
Reskeme said," Good evening Lord Peacock, how gracious of you to come and join us."
The Young Noble said," Gracious? that is a big word for you commoner. Did you learn that in the army?"
Trisha caught site of one noble ears, the ear was missing except for a small stump on the base of his head. No wonder the Noble always wore that ridiculous feathery hat. She couldn't help but stare at the ruined ear. Reaching over his shoulder, the Noble grasped his hat and thrust it back on his head. He shifted the hat to the side and covering the stump with a flush.
Trisha swiveled from Reskeme to Lord Mark. How did they know each other? Trisha said," who is the peacock?"
Reskeme said," Your friend the noble, he I-"
The Peacock rode his horse next to her mare and kicked Reskeme in the shoulder, cutting him off. Trishas horse reared and bucked. She clenched her legs to the mare's side, holding on with all of her strength. She could do nothing as Reskeme flailed against the mare's flank. Trisha heard the distinct slap of flesh on flesh and envisioned Reskemes head slamming into the horse's side. That is going to hurt tomorrow, she thought.
Trisha shouted, " Whoa, whoa! Easy girl, easy!" The horse slowly Calmed down. She gripped to her reins, whispering calming words, pulling the reins until her mare settled down. The horse snorted and its shook head before turning its head and rolling its enormous eyes angrily at her.
Hahahaha!
Heart racing, she glared murderously at the young nobleman. Lord Mark laughed, clutching his chest. The man's smile only grew when she met his eyes.
Riding back between the confused guards, his face bright red. High Inquisitor Kelvin Shouted," Stop fooling around, Mark! We are only minutes from the city, and you pull a stupid stunt like that? Why would waste all of my hard work by letting the demon die?"
The Young Noble said," He is still alive, do not worry about it High Inquisitor."
Kelvin said," I will look like a fool if the lord priest arrives from the Capitol and finds nothing but a dead body in my dungeon."
Reskeme said," The Lord Priest? Who is that?"
Inquisitor Kelvin said," The Lord Priest is One of the Church's strongest warriors. I sent the church in the Capitol a letter before we left the city. He in going to come remove your filth from the world."
