Chapter 66: Interlude Trisha 3

Chapter 66.

Trisha stood in front of the statue to the goddess of war, the tall figure wielding a straight sword left-handed while dressed in glimmering armour cut a striking image. Trisha wondered why the statue had short hair, the clatter of boots on stone brought her attention to a well-dressed man in a silver stitched brown robe. She eyed his girth in awe, she had no idea how someone could get so big, she had trouble getting enough food to fill her stomach on a daily basis let alone store up enough valuable fat on her wirery frame.

Trisha glanced down at the well-tailored red uniform, the uniform hung loosely on her tall but thin frame. The tall well-muscled mercenary she met days before stood next to the High inquisitor his face expressionless like a stone not showing a thing. Trisha said," Greetings high inquisitor Kelvin, "How are you this afternoon?"

Kelvin scowled, the man squinted up at the sun shining high in the sky. Kelvin said," I don't have to explain myself to you, mage, you obey me not the other way around. I don't pay you 20 silvers a month to tell me what I should and shouldn't do." Trisha bowed, her short sword dangled on her right and her long curved dagger on her right.

Trisha took in deep breaths, breathing in the smell of grass and sweat as she palmed her sword hilt, she said" Is it time to hunt the demon?" Kelvin smirked, He said," of course, the fiend won't suspect a thing, I received word from lord harish that the army is on the offensive going to crush the Darva scum." Kelvin sneered, he said," once I find which one of those soldiers are helping the demon I'm going to burn them at the stake for this hearacy."

Trisha said," how many more days will we wait until we leave?" Kelvin said," I have been looking for help from the nobles, I can't just take a mage from the army during a time of war, those heretics don't care if their mages arent followers of the Lytheria." The mercenary Greg said," I think we should wait until the army returns, the soldiers will be exhausted and the demon will be at his weakest."

Kelvin kicked the gravel sending small rocks scattering into the ornate stone fountain, the rocks splashed sending small rippling waves towards the statues, he said," I had the messengers guild leader in my hands, if he didn't have such powerful backers I wouldn't have let him escape." The cloaked mercenary said," It should be easy, we go to the fortress, beat him with until he can't move and drag him back to the city in chains."

Trisha wiped the back of her hand on her forehead, the gentle wind felt good against her hot skin. glancing to the side she looked over Eliya, Her friend's long curly blond hair looked damp as it stuck to her head, sweat trickled down the side of her face as Elyia gripped her staff, knuckles turning white. Eliya said," the Reskeme we knew is clearly dead, I don't think he would kill all those people around the city." Kelvin sneered, he said," the vile demon has killed 5 people, banishing the fiend is the top priority."

Eliya said," let's stop talking about going and leave, talking is getting us nowhere." Kelvin waved his hand dismissively and scoffed, he said," where is inquisitor Deren?" The cloaked mercenary Greg said," your apprentice is at a tavern in the merchants' district soothing his injuries." Trisha doubted soothing his injuries is what that ass Daren was doing, the pervert had tried to smack her butt when she met him.

Trishas respect for the church fell after meeting the apprentice inquisitor, Trisha kept her face calm forcing herself not to show how she felt, at least the high inquisitor Kelvin was respectful. Kelvin said," that's enough talking, you three are going to meet up with our supporter, he is expecting you today."

Elyia strode forward towards the front gate, Trisha smiled, her friends' enthusiasm was contagious. Trisha jogged after her feet clattering on the hard stone. The tall mercenary Greg pulled back his hood as jogged next to Trisha, His sandy brown hair and bright brown eyes made her heart skip a beat. Trisha was once again was assaulted by the clatter of carts and the smell of horse manure, she still couldn't believe how much nicer it smelled in the upper city.

Trisha stopped in the street turning to Eliya and Greg, Rubbing the back of her head Trisha said," do you know where the lord is we are going to see?" Greg smiled, Trisha felt her heart race as he grinned his straight white teeth, she would have never expected the calm confident mercenary to be soo easy on the eyes. Greg gestured towards the inner city and started walking along the busy path.

Trisha still couldn't believe how wealthy the lords and ladies of the upper district were, each of the mansions they passed had manicured lawns and gardens. Since they had been hired they had stayed in the estate of the high inquisitor giving her a taste for the luxury she may never have.

The tall fences and large estates grew larger and larger until Greg stopped in front of a mansion that stood two stories high. The mansion was surrounded by a well-manicured lawn and gardens under the numerous windows. Trisha wondered how the nobles got the time to take care of all of their property, sure it was beautiful but the amount of effort would make it too much trouble.

Mirroring her thoughts Eliya said," I don't know why the nobles bother to pay so much attention on their lawns, that has to be a lot of work." Greg laughed, he pushed open the gate and walked along the stone path leading from the gate to the house. Greg said," you think the nobles take care of the lawns? i doubt any of these nobles have lifted a finger, they pay people to do it."

From the side of the building, a young boy sprinted, kicked a ball sending the odd object flying across the lawn. The round leather object bounced several times before stopping, Trisha watched the boy, She felt a rush of mana as the young boys drew back his arm and whipped it forward sending the rock through the air, the glowing red rock flew through the air towards the ball glimmering a soft red.

The rock missed the ball and lit in the grass sending drifting smoke into the air for several moments. Trisha watched the young fire mage run across the grass and kick the ball again this time his kick sending the leather object in their direction. The ball bounced several times on the grass before ricocheting off the cobbled path and just missing the large mercenary.

The boy was dressed in black, he sported a cloak that billowed down his back in an eye-catching red and wore a black hat with a long red feather. His young face turned from excitement to confusion when he noticed the three strangers. Trisha couldn't believe her eyes, the boy was 7 or 8 years old and was already creating runes?

The mercenary bowed to the child, He said," young lord, would you happen to know where the lord mark Marte is?" The young lord said," my older brother is in the house, I can send the butler to fetch him if you would like?" The mercenary nodded his head, he said," If it would please you my lord I would appreciate it."

The young boy raised his hand and said," Do fetch Mark at his earliest con, con, Convenience, he has visitors!" The young boy smiled delightedly towards the retreating butler. Trisha whirled towards the house, A well-dressed woman stood by the side of the house unnoticed until called.

Trisha remembering the warnings of how to greet nobles, curtsying she said," and what is your name, my lord?" The young boy smirked he pulled his hat from his head and flourished the feather with an ostentatious twirl. He said," I am Elija Marte the greatest fire mage tremble in fear and awe." Trisha laughed, She said," If you keep learning magic you might become the greatest fire mage."

The boy giggled and ran towards his ball the red cloak waving in the air trailing after the young prodigy. The double doors on the front of the mansion swung open revealing a young man dressed in bright yellow and orange sporting a hat with 5 assorted feathers of different colours and lengths, Trisha couldn't tell what he was trying to accomplish but with that hat and all of its feathers but he could outshine most peacocks.

Trisha felt a pain in her side, the mercenary Greg hissed stop starring he hates when people do that. She rubbed her burning side and curtsied to the lord, Trisha said," my lord we are here on request of the high inquisitor Kelvin, we request your company at your earliest convenience."

Trisha choked out the flowery unfamiliar speech, The young man sneered, he stares down his nose at them, clearly unimpressed. He tilted his head to the side, the bright hat and its numerous feathers tilted with his head revealing the absence of the ear underneath before the man idly straightened his hat covering his missing ear again.

Lord mark said," i will arrive at the church later today." Trisha opened her mouth to protest but winced she glared at the foot pinning her leather boot to the hard stone. The mercenary Greg showed his perfect teeth he said," why of course my lord, at your earliest convenience his lord the inquisitor wished to leave before it was too late but I'm sure he won't mind the wait." The young lord Mark flushed at the rebuke, He scowled turning and yelled "pack my things and prepare the carriage we are leaving in an hour."
