"Magic," said the female half-orc with the oval face framed by long braided hair that was a darker shade than her fiery red skin, "isn't just a bunch of mystical mumbo-jumbo and incantations chanted into the ether…" 

I noticed that Mistress Grimsever had more golden rings decorating the twin tusks protruding from her lower lip. Trust me, she made it work. 

"Neither is it simply harnessing one's internal energy to access the primordial powers of the realmsverse," she explained further. "Magic is also a science. It is the science of transforming matter into energy and energy into matter." 

One of her almond-shaped scarlet eyes winked at me—and as usual, I blushed. Mistress Grimsever just had that effect on me. 

Beside me, Liara, who noticed, rolled her eyes.
