Chapter 29: The Guardian

The man had an exceptional sense of perception. He immediately sensed the murderous intent. As he raised his head, his eyes reflected a powerful will to judge.

This was the third district.

These reckless creatures—each of them deserved to be nailed to the ground.

"Commence ammo barrage, indiscriminate assault! Combat units, prepare for engagement. Target: isolated hostiles. This is a critical operation—leave no survivors!"

The man, burning with rage, had long forgotten his initial caution. In his eyes, there was only one goal now: to kill the monsters before him and avenge the innocent civilians who perished in J City.

Feng Zhiyong.

That was the man's name. In his more than two decades of military service, he had not only been a king among soldiers but also a capable commander.

When the apocalypse struck, he only lost his composure briefly before regaining his calm. He immediately organized the remaining forces. J City had three main districts, and over the past few days, he had reclaimed two of them. This third district, however, was the hardest hit, teeming with the most monsters.

Feng Zhiyong wasn't acting on impulse; he was a wise commander, fully committed to his people. Despite facing countless dangers in recent days, he had never faltered or succumbed to panic. The monster's relentless counterattacks only solidified his resolve—no matter what, he was determined to save J City and eradicate every monster within its borders.

Feng Zhiyong had absolute confidence in delivering a crushing blow to these monsters.

Much of Feng Zhiyong's current strength stemmed from the professionals who had awakened under his command.

"Kill!"

At that moment, four soldiers charged forward at Feng Zhiyong's command. One young man's skin suddenly turned jet black, and his hair took on a rusty hue.

He was an Iron Forger, capable of turning his body into hardened steel.

"Break!" On the other side, a middle-aged man opened his mouth, and a flash of white light burst forth like a cannonball, knocking several acid-spitting bugs into the air.

A Qigong Master, he could gather qi in his mouth, unleashing a blast with devastating long-range attack.

Whoosh!

A sharp noise sliced through the air as a shadow darted through the crowd, reaching the monsters. Astonishingly, not a single monster could touch even the hem of his clothing.

A Ghost Assassin, his speed was unmatched, almost supernatural. If he continued to evolve, he might even gain the ability to teleport.

"You disgusting creatures, die!" Another professional, a hot-tempered Vine Warlock, summoned a mass of tough vines from the ground, which could only be cut with great difficulty, even with a sharp blade.

The four professionals, under Feng Zhiyong's command, felt no fear facing the monsters. Instead, they unleashed their most powerful attacks without hesitation. It was clear that they harbored deep hatred for these creatures, showing no mercy.

And rightfully so.

This disaster had struck without warning. Communications had been lost nationwide, and it was evident that this catastrophe had spread far and wide. The thought that their families, far away, might have been slaughtered by monsters filled these professionals with burning rage.

After following Feng Zhiyong for a long time, the four had developed a seamless synergy—Iron Forger handled defense, Qigong Master took care of long-range attacks, Vine Warlock controlled the battlefield, while the swift Ghost Assassin focused on offense and killing.

Perfect.

This team wasn't thrown together haphazardly; it was formed through careful consideration and had become a well-oiled machine.

The Qigong Master remained stationary, opening his mouth to launch a blinding white orb that struck where the monsters had gathered. The Ghost Assassin, moving at an incredible speed, followed close behind, darting forward like a streak of light, his every move laced with lethal intent and a cruel smirk.

Lions use their full strength even when hunting rabbits.

The Ghost Assassin's near-invisible speed turned him into a nightmare for anything in his path.

Feng Zhiyong inhaled the scent of blood. Over the past few days, they had encountered countless monsters. He had gone from panic to calm, and now, in his fifties, he had adapted to the blood and gore after seeing countless soldiers fall and endless monsters reduced to carcasses.

These monsters were like vultures, feeding on carrion—deceitful, ruthless, driven by nothing but the urge to kill.

Over these days, Feng Zhiyong had witnessed so much bloodshed. Even as a soldier, he still found it hard to believe after witnessing so many people being devoured and slaughtered.

But he could not afford to be afraid.

In the past, Feng Zhiyong might have exercised some caution.

But now, with not only soldiers at his side but four awakened professionals under his command, he had nothing to fear.

A true man kills without hesitation.

Over the decades, Feng Zhiyong had risen from a naive youth to a general, enduring countless hardships along the way.

He had witnessed the rise of J City into a thriving metropolis with his own eyes. Now, this filthy, ugly horde sought to destroy it.

'Do you think you're worthy?!'

Feng Zhiyong stood there, his face expressionless, but deep within, a storm was brewing. He had never been one to submit easily. Buried in his bones was a flame—a flame of madness.

No matter what, even if it cost him his life, he would defend this city!

As a commander, how could he possibly fear the sheer number of monsters?!

"Kill!"

A cold, powerful shout erupted from Feng Zhiyong, his voice brimming with authority, as if an iceberg capable of freezing souls had descended upon the battlefield, pressing down on every monster present with earth-shattering force!

Though he was just an ordinary man, at this moment, he stood like a mountain, causing the monsters to tremble in fear.

It was as if Feng Zhiyong embodied the very will of the city. After enduring so much death and bloodshed, this ancient city, through him, expressed its defiance and burning wrath against these invaders.
