"What's wrong with these beasts? Step back... step back..."
"Don't let them out, hurry and lock them up!"
"Let me go, don't... don't come near me!"
Terrified screams echoed from beyond the door. It was clear that the apocalyptic energy hadn't just corrupted the fighting dogs' minds—no, it was more accurate to say they had awakened.
On rainy days, swallows fly low, and when an earthquake is about to hit, pigs and dogs become restless. Compared to humans, who stand at the top of the food chain yet have grown complacent and increasingly degenerate, animals are often more sensitive to changes in nature.
The strange energy had permeated the entire world, and beyond just the Cerberus, other creatures had undergone significant changes—becoming savage, violent, bloodthirsty, and cruel.
Rabbits once docile in their cages could now bite off a finger in a single snap. The lazy cat on the sofa could pierce its owner's neck with sharp claws, and dogs, once the epitome of loyalty, would, in an instant, tear their masters to pieces.
Unlike the mutations in insects or the zombification of humans, the transformation in animals was more profound. The atavistic phenomenon—traits that had taken humans centuries or even millennia to suppress—had now reawakened in their brains.
After about five minutes, as the last scream faded, an eerie silence settled over the Colosseum.
"Creak..."
Chen Feng pushed open the tightly shut door.
The stench of blood.
But unlike the previous bloodshed that had been accompanied by noise and cheers, the Colosseum now reeked of death, making one's scalp tingle.
Hundreds of humans lay dead in pools of blood, their faces frozen in expressions of panic, fear, helplessness, and confusion. Compared to the corpses that still bore traces of emotion, many more were reduced to mere unrecognizable, bloody messes.
Severed limbs, broken arms, entrails, blood...
In the corner, a corpse surrounded by coins caught Chen Feng's eye. A faint tattoo was still visible on the body, the neck bitten through, the eyes gouged out, and the once-fat right leg gnawed down to the bone. Money? The boss who had been counting his coins just a moment ago was now nothing more than a dismembered corpse.
Money? Property?
These were terms that had consumed a human's lifetime of effort, but now, with the destruction of the Colosseum, the brutal deaths of hundreds, and the boss's grisly end, they had utterly vanished into thin air.
"Grrrr..."
A low, menacing growl snapped Chen Feng out of his thoughts. A dozen blood-soaked monsters appeared before him—they were the fighting dogs from earlier. Now, their bodies were covered in blood and their fur stood on end. Their eyes, blood-red and wild, brimmed with a savage ferocity.
These loyal dogs, once trained to please humans, had now transformed into relentless harbingers of death.
The killers had not left. Now, they had clearly set their sights on Chen Feng as their next target.
"SI... xk... po..."
The Dretch stepped forward.
A towering mass of rotting flesh, the Dretch stood about four meters tall. As it rose to its full height, it opened its mouth wide, unleashing a stench so foul that it overpowered even the pervasive smell of blood.
"Begone!"
Chen Feng stood firm, staring down the group of vicious beasts that had just taken hundreds of lives. His expression was solemn, exuding an eerie calm and indifference.
Natural Selection.
From now on, this world wouldn't offer you any special treatment just because you showed a little pity. On the contrary, fear and weakness would only hasten death's arrival.
A strange tableau.
A dozen cruel, bloodthirsty fighting dogs faced off against a rotting, grotesque creature. Compared to these two predators, Chen Feng seemed weak. But despite this, his presence, bolstered by the Dretch at his side, only grew stronger.
"Grrrr..."
One of the larger fighting dogs let out a low whimper, causing the others to halt their advance. It then gave Chen Feng a long, piercing look before turning and leading the pack away.
"They have a leader already?"
Chen Feng watched the retreating figure, his brows furrowing slightly. "That dog has already taken control of the pack. To do so within minutes... it clearly has the potential to become an elite monster."
It wasn't until the last fighting dog had disappeared that Chen Feng allowed himself to exhale deeply. Unbeknownst to him, his back was already drenched in cold sweat.
Although the Dretch was stronger overall, it was still alone, and in protecting Chen Feng, it could have easily missed something.
The whole encounter had been a gamble.
Fortunately...
Chen Feng's luck held, and he had managed to scare off these ferocious creatures.
The Colosseum fell silent once more, but Chen Feng had no intention of using it as a base. Not only was there a chance that the fighting dogs might return, but the overwhelming stench of blood would undoubtedly attract zombies and other mutated creatures.
He needed to leave.
Chen Feng's eyes were filled with determination.
The apocalypse had begun, plunging all of J City into a killing frenzy. In this feast of death, even Chen Feng, with a Dretch at his side, was in grave danger. After all, he had just awakened his abilities and was far from the strength required to massacre his way to safety. He needed to find a secure shelter.
Compared to the scattered forces, only the nations military had the power to stand against this apocalyptic madness.
In the early days of the apocalypse, ordinary bullets still held some killing power. After a period of intense fighting and confrontation, the military would seize control of J City within seven days.
Seven days.
Much would happen during those seven days.
More than two-thirds of J City's population would lose their lives in that time—seven bloody, terrifying, and dangerous days.
Chen Feng had just awakened his abilities and was nowhere near strong enough to face countless monsters alone. He needed to find a safe place to wait out the chaos...
Compared to scattered forces, the military's unity and discipline gave it the unparalleled killing power needed to take charge during the apocalypse. Within seven days, the military would have the situation under control, dividing China into several war zones. Civilian leadership would be eliminated, and military officers would take over all significant positions.
From lowly privates to high-ranking generals.
Additionally, countless smaller forces would rise—sects, gangs, mercenaries, war bands. Among them were ambitious warlords seeking to carve out their own territories, ascetic monks dedicating their lives to saving refugees, and those who had forsaken their humanity, building their pleasure on the suffering of others.
In short, society would collapse, resentment would soar, and countless demons and monsters would run rampant.
Of course, all of that was still to come. For Chen Feng, who controlled the world was irrelevant. Surviving the next seven days was his top priority.
Chen Feng steadied himself, then walked out of the room, searching for a nearby convenience store.
Seven days.
Before finding a proper fortress to hide in, he needed to stock up on food.
As for the dog ring behind him, and the dead bodies within, no one would care, and no one would mourn.
In this already chaotic land, the last thing it lacked was predators.
It wouldn't be long before monsters came to feast on these corpses of the age that had just ended.
Will be posting at an enhanced rate at first to gain some traction since I have some backlog to start with
