Nandita was sitting on her couch. It was late afternoon. She had just eaten her lunch and was looking at a pair of sparrows making their nest on the branch of the big banyan tree on the opposite side of the house. At that time, there was a slight knock on her door.
The man who entered had a turban wrapped around his head. He had hazel blue eyes and his ears were adorned with curved silver earrings, which was an oddity as men at that time did not wear earrings. His name was Sanjeeva and he was Nandita's second in command in TSO. Incidentally, he was also the only man who knew Nandita to be the actual leader who directed TSO from the shadows.
"You are early," said Nandita.
Sanjeeva: Did you sleep well?
Nandita: No. I did not. I had the same problem as before. But, I called in the Doctor uncle. He has prescribed me a few medicines. Hopefully, I will sleep better today.
Sanjeeva: What did the Doctor say, Nandu ( Nickname of Nandita, spoken of by her well-wishers.)?
Nandita: He told me to rest and not be anxious. He also has given a few medicines to help with sleep at night.
Sanjeeva: I agree with the doctor. You need to be more relaxed. Moreover, we are very near to achieving our goal.
Nandita: And that's what is making me nervous. Have you vetted the newcomers properly? We should not be blindsided by spies among the ranks. That will spell doom for us.
Sanjeeva: How many years have you known me? Do you think I will not be careful with who is allowed to join TSO? Don't worry. It has all been taken care of in the most appropriate manner.
Nandita: Do you have any news on when Lord Tennenbaum of the British East India Company ( EIC ) going to visit Meerut? We have to be ready with our preparations.
Sanjeeva: Fret not. I have someone on the inside. When Tennenbaum makes his move, we will be ready with ours as well.
Nandita: Good. This time, we must not miss our mark. The message must be driven hard into the ranks of EIC. They must understand that they cannot just invade a country, bring the populace under their heels and oppress the said populace to fatten up their belly.
Lord Tennenbaum was a general in the EIC. He had been sent to India to suppress all the pro-freedom revolutionary organisations that had been sprouting up throughout the country. He was a man with a particularly strong streak of cruelty. He believed that the white civilized people needed to rule the dark-skinned and the brown-skinned people and show them the true meaning of civilisation. According to him, the white people of Great Britain were the only civilized people and they had been born to rule over the natives of all the other nations of the world. These racist tendencies made him an extremely despicable man but being a high ranking official in the EIC, he knew how to ruthlessly clamp down on organized uprisings. He was particularly infamous for one incident in India where he along with his company had fired on an unarmed gathering of nearly thirty thousand people who were peacefully condemning the actions of the British EIC in Surat ( an Indian city ). Nearly twenty-five thousand people including men, women, pregnant women, children and infants had been killed brutally in that dreadful incident. This incident had angered all the people of the nation of India and he was a prime target of all the freedom-seeking groups throughout the country. But he was indifferent to his actions and unapologetic. After quelling all the uprisings in Surat, he had turned his eye towards Meerut, the city where Nandita resides. Nandita, like all other Indians, was seething with anger when she heard about the Surat massacre. But when she heard that Tennenbaum was coming to Meerut, she told the TSO to get ready. She along with Sanjeeva had drawn a perfect plan of action to take revenge on Tennenbaum and that's what her outfit was getting ready for. The only thing that they needed for the plan to succeed was to know the precise day and time when Tennenbaum would leave Surat for Meerut.
This chapter is inspired by a lot of real-life incidents that occurred in India during the British occupation. These incidents are presented in a fictitious fashion but to the reader, it is supposed to provide an idea of how cruelly the British had oppressed the people of India and how the freedom-seeking outfits ( Revolutionaries ) were trying to oust the British from the country.
