Everett was doing his best to learn to blend in here and take care of his lady at the same time. He spent a lot of time reading up on customs and whatnot after she showed him how to properly use the communication device she gave him. 

They were in the middle of doing that—a common occurrence—when she suddenly let out an unfamiliar noise that sounded almost pained. He was immediately on the alert.
