After a bit more talking and getting ourselves ready, not that I really needed to prepare anything, we walked outside the house. I wasn't paying much attention when we arrived, but looking around, it's much different than when we're at Lisa's. From the looks of it, there seems to be other rooms connecting to the room we just walked out of.
"Do we share this house with others?"
"Hmm? Ah, this is what we call an apartment building. But yes, you're pretty much right. Other people stay in the rooms next to ours."
"I see." Yet more things I'm learning since Charlotte took me out of that white room. I feel happy in knowing that I'm learning more about the world that Charlotte lives in.
"Okay, the sun's setting, so we don't have much time. Let's go." At her words, Charlotte and I walk down some stairs before reaching the area where all the cars have parked. But instead of expecting that woman from earlier or the man in glasses, no one was around. What I found even more surprising was that Charlotte seemed to already be familiar with one of the cars as she opened the front door without a second thought.
"Hop in." Wait...
"I'm sitting at the front?"
"Hehe, yes. We'll be using this car to get to where we need."
"Y-you can drive?" Up until now, it was Lisa who drove us to her house, and when it came to us coming here, Charlotte and I were both in the back seat. So this came as a surprise.
"Mhmm. I'm not as good as Lisa, but I'll try and keep us safe."
"Okay."
And so, I hopped into the front passenger seat with Charlotte walking around the car before hopping into the drivers seat.
"Seatbelt."
"Ah- right." I reach around to the strap that Charlotte showed me before dragging it across my body, pushing the end of it into the slot, making a 'click' sound.
"Perfect. Now let's go, shall we?" With a smile on her face, she begins to start up the car and in no time at all, we were on the move.
Driving around, I could see many more things than I never could before. With the wide open window in front of me, I could see countless buildings pass by us, some stretching far into the sky. The streets filled with lights, illuminating the city in the encroaching darkness. I could also see many people walking down either side of the street, but none of them bothered to look at us as we continued to drive through and around the buildings.
"So pretty..."
"Yeah. The city can get quite lively at night. Especially on the weekends."
"Weekends?"
"Just what we call when a work week ends. Hence the name, 'weekend.'"
"So that's what Lisa meant..." I recall her saying that she had the 'day off.' I didn't exactly know what it meant, but now I understand.
"Mhmm. Although her job is quite important, so sometimes she has to work during this time."
"Just like what you're doing right now?"
"Yup. But I have you with me this time, so it's much more enjoyable, hehe." She smiles whilst still watching the road we're driving on. I'm glad that I'm able to help her feel more comfortable like this. I hope that Charlotte takes me with her more often if I get to see that smile...
Eventually, after about ten minutes of driving, we come to a stop, with barely anyone around us. the night has set in even more, filling the streets in darkness; especially where we are now since there's not many lights around.
"Alright. This is the place. Just stick close to me."
"Got it."
We leave the car before setting off on foot. Despite it getting dark, I can still see things quite clearly, unlike when I was wearing that other mask.
It was then that I noticed that Charlotte began smelling the air around us. I try to do the same, but all I can smell is what I think is Charlotte's scent.
"Charlotte?"
"I'm just doing some recon right now. We're looking for an avian demi-human so I'm trying to see if I can smell anything that might be our suspect." She can smell different species like that? Just how good is her smell?
"You find anything?"
"Not yet. Let's continue."
We move around this desolate area together, walking side by side. And after another five minutes of walking, Charlotte suddenly stops.
"I got him. This way." She grabs my hand before picking up the pace as we're now walking at a brisk pace. I nearly tripped at the start, but quickly matched Charlotte's speed.
It was when we came to a house, that looked like any other house, that Charlotte pulled me to the side as we both take cover behind a wall.
"Charlotte?"
"Just checking something." Again she took in a deep breathe of the air around us before her eyes narrow in to the house in front of us. "It might not be him, but the avian is alone. We should be good to go."
"Okay."
"Stick close to me."
"Mm! Got it."
