Chapter 102: My First Job
It took a few hours of walking to get to the first job that Lisa gave Charlotte and I, but along the way, Lisa and Luna taught me everything about the guild system in more detail.
Basically, because I'm F rank, marked with a grey sort of stone on the top left of my card, the only way I can do E ranked jobs or above is if I'm with people who are above that rank. The way to increase my rank apparently gets harder, with me only needing to complete five F ranked jobs before being able to take a test. If I pass, then I proceed to E rank. However this job that we're doing is considered a D rank job.
"Alright, this the place?"
"Seems like it."
Luna and Charlotte talk amongst one another as we're now in front of a cave. We're currently quite far away from any sort of town or city, but considering how easy we got here with no issues at all, I think we'll be fine.
"Now, I would like for Shiro to get some experience, so don't go too crazy you two." Lisa says to both Charlotte and Luna in a stern voice.
"So, what's this job?" I end up asking Lisa since it looks like I'm also participating in this and not just watching.
"Ah- right. I forgot. We're here to deal with grobbes that have expanded too close to the nearby towns."
"Grobbes?"
"They're fat, short and generally quite slow as well. I figured this would be a good first job for you."
Well, if they're slower than Lisa during practice, then I think I can manage. Plus I heal quickly so I'm not too worried about it.
"Shouldn't we give Shiro a weapon?" Luna asks a question to Lisa.
"No. I think it's important if Shiro goes in without anything. This is to serve as a spark for her mana to take form at the end of the day."
"Right, got it."
"Stay close though, okay?"
"Nn." I reply as I begin walking next to Charlotte as we all enter the dark cave.
Once inside, I started to smell quite a foul smell, and upon looking around, I could see what looked to be piles of bones of to the side of the cave's path with dried up blood on the cave walls. Wait-
"Charlotte, Luna. Are you okay?" Thinking about the blood, I end up asking since I've learnt now that vampires are sensitive to these sorts of things.
"Hehe, I'm alright."
"Hmm? Oh! The blood? Nah, that blood has little to no mana left, so it's alright."
Both Charlotte and Luna however seem to be okay with it, but I still have the urge to cover my nose due to how bad the smell is. Is it just me?
"Hnnn...."
It was then when I turned to Lisa that I saw her covering her mouth and nose with her shirt.
"I hate grobbes..."
Lisa says as her voice is muffled under her shirt.
"So Lisa's the same as me, hehe." I end up replying to Lisa as I also grab the cuff of my shirt, pulling it up to my mouth to try and block out the stench.
"Glad I'm not the only one, haha. But do be careful. We're getting close."
As she says that, I could hear distant echoes coming from deeper inside the cave. It sounded like a completely different language to what I know as it just sounds like a bunch of yells and squeals.
"I'm sensing around twenty of them." Luna says in a quiet tone. Wait, did she just say twenty?
"Is that a lot?"
"For Grobbes, not really." But Luna dismisses it as normal.
"We'll deal with the one's any of the stronger ones, Shiro. So just pick out one and try your best." Charlotte says with a smile, patting me on the shoulder.
"Nn."
In the next few seconds, we all turns around a bend in the cave as a wide opening comes into view. in the opening was numerous creatures which I guess would be the grobbes that Lisa was talking about. They do look to be quite short, even shorter than the goblins back in Luna's lab, however they do look to be heavier in size. Small arms, small legs attacked to a round wide body. It's head pocking out at the top with long, pointed ears pointing down to the side. It was then that I noticed that their mouthed open quite large, taking up most of the space on it's head. As for clothes, most appeared to be wearing nothing, but some do have some torn clothing by the look of it.
"Now!"
At Luna's signal, we all charge forward as Charlotte and Luna take the left side while Lisa and I take the right side. In just a matter of seconds, I see Luna cleave through five of the grobbes with water magic as Charlotte immediately takes advantage of the blood spurting from their bodies in order to cleave through another five grobbes. They made it look so seamless, almost like they've done this a hundred times before.
"Shiro!" Lisa yells as I soon narrow my gaze at a grobbe that is charging at me with a long axe.
I was a bit startled at first, but after seeing how slow it was compared to what I've seen with Lisa, I managed to dodge it's swing, and with the muscle memory alone, I manage to counter their attack by disarming them from their wrist, however I didn't expect their arm to just snap like that... not wasting any time, I grab the axe before it lands on the ground before sweeping it the axe through the side of it's body, cleanly cutting the grobbe in half.
"...Heh."
I couldn't help but smile at the sight before me as I watch all the blood squirt out from the body, and in the same moment, I felt heat begin radiating inside my chest. It feels... Good.
"Good work Shi-ro?"
