Chapter 83: Back Home From A Long Night
At some point, I heard the door to the room open from behind me. Charlotte is still asleep, so I carefully rotate my body around to see. It was there that I saw a familiar face.
"Lisa?"
"Hehe, look at you two."
She wore a soft smile on her face as we speak in a quiet manner while a nurse escorts her over to us. I remain where I am, cuddled up next to Charlotte.
"Be sure to stay hydrated, Major."
"Thanks."
The nurse says as he hands Lisa a bottle of water, and once Lisa gives them her thanks, they leave the room.
"Are you okay?" I had to ask just in case, but it does look like she has some color back.
"Just a little sluggish still. I have a headache as well, but nothing too bad." She says as she sits down on the chair that I sat on earlier before I hopped into the bed with Charlotte.
"Did you want to lay down instead?"
"Fufu, don't worry. Keep Charlotte company. Plus I don't think I can fit anyways."
I was about to get ready to hop out of the bed to give Lisa room to lay down, but quickly settle back down against Charlotte upon hearing her reply. I'm happy being this close to Charlotte, this is the first time that we've slept like this before, so I'm somewhat glad that Lisa said that I can stay next to Charlotte like this.
"You two look adorable, hehe."
"I'm just a little worried if Charlotte doesn't wake up..." That has been on my mind while I've been closing my eyes. Sure I can tell she's breathing, even now, but I still can't help but worry...
"She's a tough kid, Shiro. I feel like you'll need to cut her head off in order to kill her sometimes, haha."
"Well... Let's hope that doesn't happen."
"Of course." She says as she gently pats me head. "So you best try and protect her for me, okay?"
"I- I'll try my best."
I feel like I've really become part of the family now with this. Lisa trusts me to protect Charlotte, someone she cares about. Words can't describe how happy I feel right now as I hold onto one of Charlotte's hands tighter.
"...Thank you, Lisa."
"Hehe."
Eventually, as noon was approaching, Charlotte finally begins waking up. Lisa and I talked idly while Lisa ate some food and drank water, but for the most part, we stayed silent. I was tempted to sleep again, but I just needed to know if Charlotte was to wake up.
"Mm-mmmm~" Charlotte makes some noises as her eyes slowly open up.
"Charlotte..." My chest grows warm upon seeing her golden eyes crack open through her eyes.
"Shiro..." She says my name as she turns her head to the side, our eyes now locked in with one another. "Hehe. Good morning~"
"G-good morning."
"Hey, don't forget about me you love birds." It was then that Lisa jumped into the conversation, prompting Charlotte to sit up slightly as I too did the same.
"Lisa?!" Charlotte's eyes widen in surprise upon seeing Lisa with us.
"Haha. I guess we survived."
"Khh!" Suddenly, Charlotte flinches as her hand shoots towards her chest; her wound."
"Hey, don't move so suddenly like that. You got quite beat up back there."
"I know... And- I'm sorry about before."
"It's alright. If I didn't do that, you would've died."
"But, I could've killed you."
"Well then you should thank Shiro."
"Hehe, yeah. Thank you again, Shiro."
"N-no problem..." I still recall when Charlotte's eyes had changed back then as she was sucking on Lisa's blood. It was like she was a different person, like she lost herself. "I just wanted Charlotte back."
"Well, we're not 'back' yet. So let's get out of here, shall we?" Lisa chimes in as she sits up from her chair.
"Yeah."
"I'll get the nurses to help us. They shouldn't have any complaints."
And so, with the help of a couple nurses, we managed to get Charlotte into a wheelchair. Soon enough, we get to the car as the nurses again help move Charlotte into the back seat to properly lay down.
During the drive back, I sat in the passenger seat as Lisa drove us back. But I still couldn't fully calm down as instead of looking at the sights, I continued to check up on Charlotte. She looks fine for the most part, but knowing that there's a massive slice on her chest under those bandages and clothes scares me. A part of me wants to just take off the gown she's wearing along with the bandages just to see how bad of a wound it is and to see how much it has healed.
That said though, we eventually make it back to Lisa's place as this time, Lisa and I help walk Charlotte inside, with the two of us taking one shoulder each. The stairs inside was a bit of an issue as with every step, Charlotte looked to be biting back pain, making my heart stop each time.
But after a slow ascend, we finally get to mine and Charlotte's room as we gently lay her on the bed.
"Haaah~ Finally home, haha."
"Sorry." Charlotte looks to be back to normal now after laying down, but her voice sounds quite dejected.
"It's fine~ You got us to the hospital didn't you? It's only fair that I pull my own weight, haha."
Now that Lisa mentions it, it was incredible that Charlotte pulled all of that off while keeping all her blood inside, all while bearing through the pain. I know that I could probably do just fine with the pain, but Charlotte seems to see it differently. I guess I'll just have to make sure that this kind of thing doesn't happen again.
"Shiro." Suddenly, Lisa speaks to me as I direct my attention to her.
"Yes?"
"Take care of Charlotte until she gets better for me, okay?"
"Yes!" I waste no time in answering. I've already planned to do that from the beginning.
"Pfft. Your wife looks quite determined huh, Charlotte?"
"Oh please..."
