Nightmare felt that he was incredibly unlucky.

It was a pitiable situation, really. He was the archetypal "left-behind child". When he was very young, his parents went off to work in cities far away, leaving him in his hometown, a small town under a fourth-tier county, to live with his grandparents.

The elderly couple lacked energy and were busy with various household chores, naturally, they didn't have the experience to properly discipline a kid like Nightmare.

The quality of education in the town's schools was also quite worrying. Over time, Nightmare became a regular fixture at the local internet cafes, essentially a gaming trash.

He didn't really have any talent for gaming. However, he forged strong friendships with a bunch of lousy friends at the café, most of whom were left-behind kids like himself. Eventually, they formed an organization called the XX Family, sporting the visual style of a subculture that was trendy a couple of years ago.
