Chapter 18: The Hidden Agenda
Dr. Kim's smile seemed to grow even wider as she gazed at Emma. "Excellent," she repeated. "The Echo Chamber is working perfectly. We're on the cusp of a major breakthrough."
Ryan's eyes narrowed. "What kind of breakthrough?" he asked, his voice laced with suspicion.
Dr. Kim's expression turned bland. "Oh, just a minor advancement in the field of neuroscience. Nothing to concern yourselves with."
Emma felt a shiver run down her spine. She didn't believe Dr. Kim for a second. There was something more to this story, something Dr. Kim was hiding.
"I want to know what's going on," Emma said, her voice firm. "What's the real purpose of the Echo Chamber?"
Dr. Kim's smile faltered for a moment, before she regained her composure. "I assure you, Emma, the Echo Chamber is a revolutionary tool for unlocking the secrets of the human mind. With this technology, we can cure mental illnesses, enhance cognitive function, and even unlock the hidden potential of the human brain."
Ryan snorted. "That sounds like a sales pitch. What's the real agenda?"
Dr. Kim's eyes flashed with anger, but she quickly suppressed it. "I assure you, our intentions are pure. We're on the verge of a major breakthrough, and we need Emma's help to take it to the next level."
Emma felt a sense of unease. She didn't trust Dr. Kim, and she certainly didn't trust the Echo Chamber. But a part of her was curious - what secrets did the machine hold? And what would happen if she delved deeper into its mysteries?
"I'll do it," Emma said finally, her voice barely above a whisper. "I'll help you unlock the secrets of the Echo Chamber."
Dr. Kim's smile returned, wider than ever. "Excellent," she said. "Let's begin the next phase of the experiment."
As Dr. Kim led Emma towards the Echo Chamber, Ryan grabbed her arm. "Emma, don't do this," he whispered. "We don't know what we're dealing with."
Emma hesitated, torn between her curiosity and her fear. But it was too late. Dr. Kim had already attached the sensors to her head, and the machine was humming to life.
"Let's see what secrets you hold, Emma," Dr. Kim said, her voice dripping with anticipation.
As the machine whirred to life, Emma felt herself being pulled into a world of darkness and terror. She knew she had to escape, but it was too late. The Echo Chamber had her in its grasp, and it would never let her go.
