Chapter 27: Chapter 27) Fragile Yanyan
Good thing, Gu Yanran was there to change the topic and save her mother from further embarrassment.
Pretending to be a good girl, in front of old Madam Gu she had always maintained her image as the obedient and kind hearted girl which was well appreciated by Old Madam Gu.
Seeing how her mother was rendered speechless by Gu Yanyan, Gu Yanran couldn't help but interject between them in her soft and gentle voice.
"What are you saying eldest sister? It's only right for mother to care about her children and you as the eldest daughter of our father who had been separated from mother since young surely needs her extra care and attention after your return, right mother." With a gentle and harmless smile on her face, Gu Yanran turned to her mother and asked if what she said was right.
Seeing how her daughter was making effort to turn things around, how could Madam Yun stay back and she immediately joined their mother and daughter duet.
"Yes of course. What our Yanran here said is absolutely right. After all no matter how well fed and blessed life children are having, for mothers, they are just children who are bound to make troubles and neglect their health. We as mothers, only want to make sure our children are happy and healthy. As long as children are happy and healthy, other things are unnecessary to us."
In her words, Gu Yanyan was a little troublemaker who didn't care about her health and made Madam Yun worry for nothing.
'Hmph. So much drama. This mother - daughter duo really should join a drama company to use and show their ability to the fullest.' Gu Yanyan internally rolled her eyes at Gu Yanran and her mother, Madam Yun.
"I'm sorry mother. It's daughter who is thoughtless and unfilial, always makes troubles and let mother worry about her." Gu Yanyan apologised again, her eyes rimmed with red and glossy with unshed tears, looking so fragile and pitiful after being called a troublemaker, indirectly.
'Hmph. Since you have already said things in riddles then let me put it directly.' Gu Yanyan thought to herself.
"Enough." Hearing their banter for a while and seeing how Yun mother and daughter duo had driven already pitiful and weak Gu Yanyan to tears, old Madam Gu couldn't help but speak.
She glared at Madam Yun and warned her with her eyes to not make things more difficult for Gu Yanyan.
After all in her eyes, this just returned grand daughter of hers was nothing but a naive fool who would become happy at a sight of sweet candy and start to shake and cry at a little scolding.
For old Madam Gu, Gu Yanyan was like an abandoned puppy, sensitive to other's favour and hostility towards her and if she showed a little favour towards her in front of Madam Yun, she would surely remember her this little gesture and if things turned awful in the near future, she would surely take old Madam's side and help Gu Residence in troubles, if anything, as the precious grand daughter of the Lin Family and eldest daughter of the three hundred years old Gu family, she would make a good pawn to make connection through marriage.
Thinking all these benefits, old Madam Gu's gaze couldn't help but soften as she looked at Gu Yanyan more.
Seeing how old Madam Gu looked at Gu Yanyan with her soft and loving haze, Gu Yanran who had always been pretending to be an obedient and filial grand daughter in front of old Madam Gu all day long, couldn't help but clench her fingers in fist under her sleeves.
Even though there was a fire inside her heart, her lips were still stretched in a gentle and harmless smile.
"Yanyan, come, take a seat, child. Today, grandmother asked you to come because grandmother has something to inform you." Old Madam Gu loving offered Gu Yanyan a seat beside Gu Yanran.
"Yes, grandmother." Gu Yanyan slightly courtesy and stepped towards her seat.
It had to be noted, it's already been a few days since Gu Yanyan had returned to Gu Residence and they had met a quit few time in these few days but not even once Gu Yanran or any juniors in the family had taken initiative to greet Gu Yanyan, their eldest sister and surprisingly, Gu family members who pride themselves for being scholars and always follow rules and mannerism in everything, never found it odd.
Thinking this, Gu Yanyan chuckled inwardly, nonetheless she took her seat beside Gu Yanran.
A maid came forward and poured a hot cup of plum tea. The same tea which was given to her as a gift on her welcome feast by Gu Yanran.
It seemed Gu Yanran had really put a lot of effort to please old Madam Gu all these years. Gu Yanyan said nothing and took a sip of warm tea, savoring the taste and aroma of the plum tea.
"Yanyan, this child, it's already been a few days but you have been cooped in your courtyard all day long not mingling with others and experiencing the environment which I think is the reason why your health has worsen after coming here." Old Madam Gu said as she scolded Gu Yanyan with a look of doting in her eyes.
She really played the role of a kind and loving grandmother.
She was sure, she played the same kind and loving mother-in-law's role to get her mother down her guards around her and give her a chance to backstab her mother.
But who was Gu Yanyan?
Someone from the modern era.
She had already been played this game which old Madam Gu has just started and if not for a little miscalculation, she would have already won that game. But... forget it.
Since fate has given her another chance, she of course won't make the same mistake and fall into such kind looking grandmother's trap, again.
