100% Reasons to Love Me / Chapter 18: A Bridge Left Uncrossed

Chapter 18: A Bridge Left Uncrossed

The room was steeped in an uneasy silence, broken only by the soft ticking of a clock on the mantle. Vlad Masters sat across from Maddie Fenton, his usual air of composure slipping into something quieter, more conflicted. He observed her, noting the way her gaze stayed fixed on her hands, clasped tightly together as if trying to hold back the storm of emotions beneath. She seemed to want to speak, but the words caught somewhere, just beyond reach.

Finally, Vlad broke the silence, though he found it harder than he'd expected. His voice was low, tinged with an unusual tension. "Maddie… I can tell something's weighing on you." He hesitated, knowing that his next words might open a door he wasn't sure he wanted to step through. He knew what the subject was.

Maddie nodded, her shoulders tense as she kept her gaze lowered, eyes still focused on her hands. "I keep wondering if I did the right thing," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "I told him to leave. I was so sure it was for the best, but… he's my son, Vlad. I can't keep pretending he doesn't exist."

Vlad's chest tightened as he listened to her words, feeling the pull of his own conflicted feelings. His history with Danny had been long, complex, and marked by both rivalry and respect. He had come to see Danny's strength, his resilience, and though he cared for Maddie, he wasn't certain if he could be the one to bridge the gap between mother and son.

"Maddie," he said, his voice more hesitant than usual, "Danny's chosen a different life, one that might seem…" he trailed off, unsure how to explain. "But he's finding his way, and he's doing well. Maybe… maybe it's time to let him live that life, on his terms."

Maddie's eyes finally lifted, searching his face with hope and fear. "I want to, Vlad. But he's out there, and he said he was living with… with a ghost, I said so many nasty things to him. I want to be happy for him, truly. And part of me is, but I still need to know that he's alright." Her voice cracked, the weight of her regrets clear.

Vlad shifted, feeling a surge of sympathy as he met her gaze. "Maddie," he said slowly, weighing his words, "I've been in contact with him here and there. I know he's alright. He's become someone you would be proud of. But…" He hesitated, his own frustration flickering beneath the surface. "I don't know if I can be the one to make that connection happen for you. I don't even know if I should."

Her face fell, and she looked back down at her hands. "I understand," she murmured. "It's not your responsibility, Vlad. I just… I just don't know how to reach him."

He felt a pang of sympathy, but it was mixed with a sense of helplessness. He cared for Maddie, but bringing her back into Danny's life wasn't a simple choice. There were wounds, things left unsaid and decisions that might not be his to make.

Danny took a steadying breath, his mind racing as he looked down, avoiding Vlad's gaze. "I… I'll think about it," he said, his voice a mixture of uncertainty and resolve. He wasn't ready to rush into this, not after everything that had happened.

Vlad nodded, understanding. "Take your time, Daniel. It's not an easy choice, I know." He stepped back from the doorway, offering a rare, sympathetic smile. "Goodnight, Danny."

"Goodnight," Danny replied quietly, closing the door after Vlad left.

Danny stood in the entryway, letting the silence settle around him. He could still feel the weight of Vlad's words echoing in his mind, the idea of reconciling with his mom stirring up emotions he'd tried to bury. As he paced back and forth, his gaze drifted around the room, and a small smile tugged at his lips as he took in the details of his life with Ember.

The framed photo on the mantle showed him, Ember, and Lucia in that unforgettable family moment, captured against the backdrop of the Ghost Zone. The toys scattered across the floor, evidence of Lucia's endless energy, made him feel at home in a way he hadn't expected. A few of Ember's guitars leaned against the wall, and the faint scent of her lavender perfume lingered in the air, adding to the comforting familiarity of the space.

Danny found himself standing by one of Ember's guitars, his fingers gently tracing the strings as he thought about her. Life with Ember had never been traditional, but it had given him a kind of happiness and belonging that he hadn't known he needed. Ember was wild and free-spirited, they were total enemies before, but they had gone to love each other. with him, she was gentle, understanding. She had seen him for who he was, both as Danny and as Phantom, and she loved him wholly. Together, they had created a life where they could be themselves—a world apart from the pressures of the Fenton family expectations.

As the night wore on, Danny found himself drawn toward Lucia's room, the urge to be near his daughter strong and steady. He quietly opened the door, his eyes adjusting to the soft glow from her nightlight. There she was, nestled under her blankets, her tiny hand still clutching her stuffed ghost bear, her blue hair spread across the pillow in soft, tangled wisps. Her gentle, rhythmic breathing filled the room, and Danny felt a warmth spread through his chest as he looked at her.

For a moment, he simply stood there, drinking in the sight of his daughter. She represented so much—proof of all he and Ember had overcome together, a symbol of their resilience and love. The incident with Skulker came back to him, and he shivered at the memory. It had been a fierce battle, one where they'd barely made it out unscathed. They had fought to protect this life, this family, enduring hardships and dangers that once would have felt insurmountable.

And here she was, his daughter, his little light in the darkness, sleeping peacefully because they had fought for this peace. He had built a life he loved, despite everything. A life with Ember, with Lucia. He smiled, leaning down to brush a gentle hand over her hair, feeling the soft warmth radiating from her. It was in these moments that he felt the deepest gratitude, a quiet, boundless joy that no challenge or conflict could diminish.

With a sigh, he left Lucia's room, gently closing the door and heading to bed. But sleep didn't come easily, his mind too full of the memories stirred up by Vlad's visit.

Meanwhile, miles away in a quiet hotel room, Ember was finishing up her routine after a long tour night. She stepped out of the bathroom, running a towel through her wet blue hair, exhaustion written on her face. The tour had been exhilarating, and she loved performing, but the weeks on the road had left her longing for home. She missed Lucia's giggles, the warmth of Danny's presence, the life they had built together. With each night away, the ache of being apart grew.

She glanced at her phone, the thought of calling Danny tugging at her. She picked it up, about to dial, when her screen lit up, Danny's name flashing across it. She couldn't help the smile that spread across her face, a blush creeping into her cheeks. Sometimes, she thought, they truly shared a brain.

She answered, her voice soft and warm. "Hi."

"Hi," Danny replied, his tone carrying the same gentle warmth.

For a moment, neither of them spoke, letting the comfort of the silence fill the space between them. Then Danny broke the quiet, his voice softened by longing. "I miss you."

Ember's smile widened, her heart swelling. "I miss you too," she murmured. "And Lucia. I can't wait to be home."

There was a pause, then Danny asked, "Did you enjoy the show?"

Her cheeks reddened, a shy smile tugging at her lips. "Of course I did," she said, her voice light. "But it's never the same without you two there."

Danny chuckled softly. "We were there in spirit," he teased. "Lucia was clapping along. She loves seeing you on stage. It's like she knows her mom is a rockstar."

Ember laughed softly, feeling a rush of warmth. "She's got her dad's spirit, you know," she replied, a hint of pride in her voice. "And I can't wait to see her. To see both of you."

Ember leaned back against the headboard, cradling the phone, her smile widening as she listened to Danny's voice. There was a quiet joy in talking to him like this, late at night after a show, knowing they were connected even miles apart. But then Danny's tone shifted, just slightly, and her heart gave a soft, instinctual hitch.

"Ember… there's something I need to say," he began, his voice taking on a weight that she hadn't expected.

A sudden nervousness fluttered in her chest, and she swallowed, trying to keep her tone steady. "Yeah?" she asked softly, hoping to keep the anxiety from seeping into her words.

There was a pause, and on the other end of the line, she could hear Danny take a deep breath, as though wrestling with the right words. He hesitated, and then, as if reconsidering, he let out a gentle sigh.

"Maybe we should talk about it when you get home," he said, his tone soft and reassuring. "It's just… it's something I think we should discuss in person."

Ember felt her heart flutter with uncertainty, her mind racing with possibilities. She wanted to ask more, to know what was weighing on him, but something in his voice—something careful and protective—made her hold back.

"Alright," she replied, keeping her voice as steady as she could. "When I get home, then."

Danny's voice softened, and she could almost see the warmth in his expression, the gentle smile she knew so well. "I'm counting down the days," he said, and she could hear the sincerity in his voice. "We miss you, Ember."

"I miss you both more than you know," she murmured, the ache of longing filling her chest. "Goodnight, Danny."

"Goodnight, Ember," he replied, his voice lingering in her ear before the call ended.

As she set her phone down, Ember found herself staring at the screen, her mind spinning. What did Danny want to talk about? Her mind churned through a dozen possibilities, wondering if something had happened if he was alright. It was hard to settle her racing thoughts, and the worry lingered long after the conversation had ended. Still, she tried to push it aside, reminding herself that whatever it was, they would face it together. They always did.

The next few days crawled by in a blur of performances, travel, and restless nights. The question of what Danny had wanted to discuss lingered at the back of her mind, gnawing at her. She couldn't quite shake the uncertainty, and as her tour finally came to an end, she was more than ready to be home.

Late one evening, her final show wrapped, and Ember found herself standing at the threshold of their home, her heart racing with anticipation. She slipped inside quietly, the familiar warmth of their shared space washing over her, a welcome contrast to the cold hotel rooms and distant stages she'd become so accustomed to.

"Danny?" she called softly, setting her bags down as she closed the door behind her.

Footsteps sounded from down the hall, and a moment later, Danny appeared, his face lighting up at the sight of her. Before she could say another word, he crossed the room and wrapped her in his arms, pulling her close. She melted into the embrace, the familiar feel of him easing her worries.

"Welcome home," he murmured, his voice filled with warmth. "Lucia is sleeping right now."

Ember looked up at him and nodded, searching his face as her heart raced. She was reminded of the lingering question that had haunted her through those final days on tour, and now that she was here, the words came tumbling out before she could stop them.

"Danny… what was it you wanted to talk about?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Danny smiled at her, a soft, reassuring smile that held a hint of something unspoken. Without another word, he leaned down and kissed her, his lips gentle but lingering, filled with a warmth that eased her anxious thoughts. When he finally pulled back, his hand still resting on her cheek, he murmured, "It's a long story."

Ember raised an eyebrow, the corners of her mouth lifting in a playful smile, but her eyes remained curious. "Then I guess we'd better make ourselves comfortable," she replied her voice light but tinged with intrigue.

Moments later, the soft glow of candlelight filled the bathroom, illuminating the warm, inviting water of the bathtub. Steam rose in delicate wisps, curling around the edges of the room. Ember slipped in first, settling against the smooth porcelain, the warmth soothing her muscles after the long tour. She closed her eyes, sighing contentedly as the heat enveloped her, and a moment later, she felt Danny slide in behind her, wrapping his arms gently around her shoulders.

The weight of his presence was comforting, and grounding. She leaned back against him, her head resting just beneath his chin as his hands moved gently over her arms, his touch steady and calming. They sat together in comfortable silence, the water lapping softly around them, the quiet intimacy filling the room, Danny kissed her neck and massaged her hair and shoulders, then moved his hands on her breasts massaging them, making her softly moan and blush.

After a while, Ember tilted her head back, looking up at him. "So," she murmured, her voice soft, "are you ready to tell me?"

Danny let out a slow breath, his fingers tracing gentle circles on her shoulders. "Vlad came by," he began, his voice low and steady. He said… that my mom wants to talk to me."

Ember's eyes widened, her body tensing slightly in his arms as she processed his words. She turned to face him more fully, searching his face for confirmation, a spark of disbelief in her gaze. "After what she did to you?" she whispered, her voice tinged with an edge of both shock and anger. "She told you to leave, Danny. She didn't even try to understand… she just—" Ember's words trailed off, but her eyes were intense, filled with emotions that her voice couldn't fully convey.

Danny looked down, his fingers stilled on her shoulders. "Yeah," he said quietly, a hint of sadness in his voice. He hadn't expected this either, and the conflict of emotions was as overwhelming for him as it was for her.

Ember shook her head, her lips pressing into a thin line as she tried to absorb it. "So, now she wants to come back into your life?" Her voice was soft but laced with a rawness, like she was wrestling with the memory of everything they'd gone through, everything Danny had endured because of his family's rejection. "Danny, after everything she said to you… everything she refused to accept…" Her gaze softened, and she placed her hand over his, grounding him. "How can she just expect you to forget that?"

Danny's hand tightened over hers as he took a deep breath, his eyes darkening with a mixture of resignation and lingering pain. "I don't know," he admitted. "I don't know what she's expecting, or even if this is real."

"But I don't want to put you or Lucia in Danger, she said some nasty things towards you." Danny sighed remembering the fall out.

But… there's a part of me that wonders what it would be like if she met you and Lucia."

He paused, his gaze drifting down to their joined hands as if the thought itself was too fragile to hold. "You know how obsessed she's always been with ghosts," he continued, his words tinged with a bitter, almost ironic smile. "Maybe she'd even be fascinated—if she could just see you both as… as family, instead of something to be afraid of."

Ember looked at him, her expression softening as she listened. She could see the flicker of hope in his eyes, the cautious, fragile hope that maybe, just maybe, things could be different. She gently traced her thumb over his hand, grounding him in her presence as he wrestled with his thoughts.

"And Jazz," Danny murmured, his voice barely a whisper, almost as though he were speaking to himself. "I haven't thought about her in ages. My older sister. She always wanted to understand me, wanted to help me—even when Mom wouldn't listen."

He paused, the memories flooding back to him, a mix of warmth and regret. "She was… she was the one who knew, who sensed things about me before I even said a word. I wonder if she'd accept this, if she'd be there for me now."

A pang of nostalgia washed over him as he thought of his sister. Jazz had always tried to bridge the gap between him and their mom, to see past what they believed and understand who he truly was. If anyone could accept his life, his family, his choices… it might be her.

Ember squeezed his hand, her voice gentle but filled with quiet strength. "Maybe Jazz would understand," she said, her tone thoughtful. "She always looked out for you, didn't she? She loved you enough to see who you were, not just what you could do."

Danny nodded slowly, feeling its weight settle over him. "Yeah… she did," he murmured, his voice thick with a mix of longing and uncertainty. "But so much time has passed. I don't even know if she'd be willing to see me now. To accept all of this."

Ember shifted, turning so she could look into his eyes fully. "Danny," she said, her voice soft but steady, "I know this is hard. But whatever choice you make, I'll be right here. Lucia and I—we're your family. And if it feels right to open that door again, then we'll be with you every step of the way."

Danny's gaze softened, a warmth spreading through him as he looked into her eyes. "Thank you, Ember," he whispered, his voice filled with gratitude and something stronger, deeper—a trust he had never fully given to anyone else. "You… you've given me a life I didn't even know I wanted."

Ember leaned forward, pressing a soft kiss to his forehead. "Then let's just take it one step at a time, together."

Danny nuzzled her neck, his breath warm against her skin. "With you and Lucia by my side," he murmured, "I can face anything."

Danny took a deep breath as he stood outside his old home in Amity Park, his stomach twisting with a complex mix of nostalgia and nerves. It had been years since he'd been here, longer still since he'd returned as himself, in his human form. He adjusted his jacket, steeling himself, and finally raised his hand to knock, his heart thudding with each passing second.

A moment later, the door swung open, and there stood his mother, Maddie. Her face fell into an expression of utter shock as she took in the sight of him—grown, changed, and standing on her doorstep. She blinked, as if she couldn't quite believe what she was seeing.

"Danny… is that you?" she whispered, her voice barely more than a breath.

Danny nodded slowly, managing a small, reassuring smile. Before he could say anything more, Maddie reached out, wrapping her arms around him, pulling him into a tight embrace, as if she feared he might vanish if she let go. He returned the hug tentatively, feeling the familiar warmth of home, mingled with the weight of memories, both comforting and painful.

Footsteps echoed from the staircase, breaking the silence. Jazz, hearing the commotion, came down to investigate. She froze halfway, her eyes widening as she took in the sight of her brother standing in the doorway, wrapped in their mother's embrace.

"Danny?" she gasped, and before he could respond, she was rushing down the stairs, throwing her arms around him in a second, eager hug.

Danny tensed slightly, feeling the weight of the past pressing on him, memories of why he'd left, of the final, strained conversations they'd had. He managed a small, awkward chuckle, patting Jazz on the back with one arm, though a subtle discomfort lingered in his expression.

"Danny, it's been so long," Jazz murmured, pulling back slightly, her hands still resting on his shoulders as she looked him over. "How have you been? Are you… are you okay?"

"Yeah, I'm… okay," he replied, his tone measured as he glanced between Jazz and Maddie. The memories of his departure—of the rejection, the pain—hovered uncomfortably in his mind, but he kept his expression calm.

Maddie led him inside, her voice bubbling over with questions, a mixture of concern and a deep eagerness to reconnect. "How's life been? Are you… alright? Where have you been living? What have you been doing? We've missed you so much, Danny."

Danny kept his answers short and simple, nodding here and there, keeping his responses brief. "Fine." "Yeah, doing well." "Living out of town." The questions about his life and where he'd been felt loaded, so he avoided their gazes, especially when they inevitably brought up ghosts. The tension in the air thickened as his one-word responses kept them guessing at truths he wasn't ready to reveal.

After a moment of silence, Maddie's tone softened, a hint of hesitation evident. "Danny… Vlad mentioned that you… that you're with someone," she said carefully, her voice low. "A… ghost girlfriend?"

Before Danny could answer, a familiar voice, cool and confident, filled the room.

"That's right," Ember declared, her voice carrying a ghostly echo that sent a ripple through the air. A shimmer of bright, spectral flames danced in the center of the room as she materialized, holding Lucia close in her arms. Lucia blinked sleepily, looking around at the new surroundings, one small hand clinging to her mother's shoulder, the other clutching her stuffed ghost bear.

Maddie's eyes widened in shock, her mouth parting as she took in the sight of the blue-haired ghost holding her granddaughter. Jazz, equally taken aback, froze, staring at Ember with a look that mixed recognition and disbelief.

Ember's gaze was fierce and unwavering, yet softened slightly as she glanced at Danny, then down at Lucia, who seemed blissfully unbothered by the tension. Ember looked back at Maddie and Jazz, her expression steely. "I'm his wife, and he's my husband," she said firmly, her voice filled with conviction. "The one you threw out because you were too ignorant to accept him for who he was. The both of you."

Maddie's face flushed, her shock blending into defensiveness. "You… married a ghost? Danny, I…" She struggled to find her words, her gaze darting between her son, Ember, and the small child in Ember's arms. "After everything we taught you about ghosts, about—"

"He's been fine," Ember cut in, her voice thick with frustration. "More than fine. He's built a life—a family. One that you tried to tear apart."

Jazz's eyes narrowed as recognition finally set in. "Wait," she murmured, her voice guarded. "You're Ember. The ghost rocker. The one who tried to take over the world with your music." Her gaze shifted to Danny, her expression a mix of concern and disbelief. "Danny… you chose her?"

Ember's eyes blazed, and she held Lucia close, stepping protectively in front of Danny. "Yes, he chose me," she replied, her voice rising with fierce protectiveness. "Because I accept him for who he is. I don't judge him. I don't try to change him. I see him—all of him."

Maddie's hands trembled as she took a shaky breath, her voice tight with a blend of anger and regret. "I'm his mother. I've always wanted what was best for him. But you… you're a ghost, an unnatural presence in his life. How can you expect me to just accept this?"

"Unnatural?" Ember scoffed, bitterness lacing her tone. "What's unnatural is a mother turning her back on her own son because she's too afraid to understand him. Family is supposed to love and support, not push away."

Jazz's expression softened slightly, though she remained tense, glancing between them as though trying to make sense of everything. "Danny, we're… we're just worried. How can we trust someone who's caused chaos, who…"

"That's enough." Danny's voice broke through the escalating argument, firm but calm, a quiet authority cutting through the tension. He took a step forward, his gaze steady as he looked between his mother and sister.

"I didn't come here for this," he said, his voice steadied by years of hurt but strengthened by his resolve. "I came because… part of me wanted to believe you'd understand. That maybe we could reconnect." He looked at Ember, his gaze softening as he saw her holding Lucia, then turned back to his family. "But I'm not here to prove anything. I'm here to show you the life I've built—the family I chose."

A soft, uncertain sound interrupted the silence. Lucia had been watching the exchange quietly, and now she gazed around the room, her big blue eyes wide with confusion at the tension. She clutched her stuffed bear tighter, burying her face in Ember's shoulder.

Ember's expression softened immediately, and she ran a gentle hand through Lucia's hair, her presence soothing. She held her daughter close, wrapping her in a protective, loving embrace that seemed to ease Lucia's uncertainty.

Seeing the little girl—their granddaughter—seemed to break through Maddie's defenses. Her gaze softened, and her face held a mixture of wonder and hesitation as she looked at Lucia, something shifting within her. Jazz's expression softened, too, as the full reality settled over her.

Danny took a deep breath, his voice quieter now but just as resolute. "This is my family. Ember, Lucia… they're everything to me." He looked at his mother and sister, his expression vulnerable yet firm. "If you want to be a part of our lives, I'm willing to try. But only if you're willing to accept us. All of us."

Maddie stood there, her gaze fixed on Danny, her face a mixture of sadness and anger. She looked down, as if trying to collect herself, to pull together the pieces of what she'd just seen and heard. A long silence fell, and then she lifted her head, her eyes clouded with regret and something fiercer beneath it.

"I'm sorry," she said slowly, her voice barely above a whisper, but firm. "No. I can't accept this. I can't accept her." She shot a look at Ember, who merely raised an eyebrow in response, unimpressed. Maddie's gaze then fell to Lucia, the little girl's wide, innocent eyes blinking up at her grandmother without a trace of understanding.

"You took my son from me," Maddie continued, her voice trembling slightly. "He was supposed to grow up, to live a life we could all be part of. Instead, he's… he's thrown it all away for something unnatural, something…" Her words trailed off, but the implication hung heavy in the air.

Jazz looked down, her face shadowed with sadness as she listened to her mother's words, a part of her torn. She cast a worried look at Danny, her expression saying more than her silence ever could. She wanted to reach out to him, to find some common ground, but her loyalty to their mother kept her rooted in place.

Ember sighed, folding her arms as she glanced around the room, her eyes landing briefly on Maddie with a look of disappointment. She muttered under her breath, "Unbelievable." It was clear she was growing tired of this, of fighting for approval that would never come.

Lucia looked up at her mother, a small, oblivious smile on her face, unaware of the tension around her.

Danny took a steady breath, his face betraying no emotion, though his eyes held a glimmer of hurt. "Fine," he said, his voice steady and calm. "I just came here to say I'm fine." He forced his tone to remain even, swallowing down the sting of rejection. He'd prepared himself for this, but part of him had still hoped.

He looked down, taking a moment to collect himself before he continued, his voice quiet but resolute. "I thought… I thought there might be an understanding. That maybe, after all this time, you'd be willing to see things differently." His voice faltered for a moment, but he regained control. "But I guess I was wrong."

He straightened, his expression unreadable, as if he were finally letting go of something he'd been carrying for years.

Maddie's face fell slightly, her eyes flickering with guilt, but she held her ground, looking away from him, unable to face his gaze.

Danny turned to Jazz, offering her a small, sad smile. "Goodbye, Jazz." He paused, his eyes softening for just a moment. "Take care."

Jazz bit her lip, her eyes filled with regret. "Danny…" she began, but the words seemed to fail her. She gave a small nod instead, understanding that her silence had made her choice for her.

Danny wrapped an arm around Ember and Lucia, holding them close, and with a last glance at the family he'd left behind, he turned to leave, walking out of the house with his head held high. Whatever pain he carried, he knew he could let go. He had his family—his real family—and that was all he needed.

And as the door closed behind them, Maddie and Jazz were left in silence, watching as he walked away from them for the final time.

That was pretty dark, Hope this chapter will suffice, its hard to come up with scenes of these because of the dialogue I have to think of, because it comes off as chees
