"Where's her husband?"
Murmurs rippled through the crowd as guests glanced around for Rivana's husband, only to find her standing at a table, hiding her worries behind a forced smile. It was their second wedding anniversary, yet Viktor Hugon was nowhere to be seen, leaving his wife to greet the guests alone.
"Probably making out with her sister somewhere," a woman snickered, prompting a wave of laughter among the group.
Rivana's smile tightened, her heart sinking as she stood close enough to hear every word. Aldona Hugon had thrown this lavish party for her beloved grandson and his wife. But with Viktor absent, the celebration was morphing more into a soap opera—a scandal savored over glasses of wine.
"Poor her," another woman remarked, sipping her drink. "They were childhood sweethearts, but his love changed so quickly after their wedding."
"Poor?" Lilith scoffed, her voice rising with eagerness for attention. "Don't pity that murderer. She's vile and cunning—just like her mother. Even worse!" Disgust dripped from her words, her eyes glaring daggers at Rivana's back.
The group gasped, intrigued, and Lilith leaned in to continue, "Haven't you heard? Her sister, Rubina, accidentally spent a night with Viktor as their drinks were spiked, and ended up pregnant.
When Rivana found out, worried he might take Ruby as his mistress, she kicked her down the stairs. The baby died instantly. There's even a video circulating of her laughing while Ruby lay in a pool of blood."
A collective gasp filled the air and all eyes shot in Rivana's direction. True, no wife would welcome a mistress, even if she were her sister. But to kill an unborn child? That was a different level of evil.
"Poor Ruby," Lilith continued, her tone dripping with faux sympathy. "First, she lost her eyesight at such a young age because of this wench, and then a baby."
Rivana felt her blood boil, her fists clenching tightly. What stung her heart most was that much of the gossip was true. But her sweet sister Ruby had never been pregnant; that little witch had faked it to ruin their marriage! Would anyone believe her? Of course not!
Rivana was merely the illegitimate daughter of the Faye family, born to a woman who desperately clung to her father's rich thigh. Everything she said was either a lie or a trick to bring shame to her family. Meanwhile, Ruby's every word was swallowed as pure truth. After all, she was the family's real daughter. At least that's what Rivana's mother had always made sure to press upon her.
"I even heard they've been fighting constantly since that incident," Lilith added, her voice growing louder and reaching nearby tables. "Apparently, Viktor is head over heels for our Ruby now. If it weren't for his grandmother, he would have divorced this wicked wedlock and married her already."
Amerie Faye, Rivana's mother, smirked at the gossiping women, her face bright with barely suppressed joy. Hearing their cruel whispers was bad enough; watching them relish every detail might have been even worse for her poor daughter.
Walking to Rivana, Amerie excused from the guests and asked, "Where is your husband?"
"He must be... somewhere," Rivana murmured, eyes lowered to the ground. She and Viktor had argued earlier, and she had no desire to apologize—not this time, not when she wasn't at fault! She was exhausted from always being the one to fix things. Viktor needed to make efforts too!
"Go find him quickly! I'll check the balcony; you search your room," Amerie ordered, pushing Rivana toward the stairs before striding away.
Rivana sighed, watching her mother disappear into the crowd. She rubbed her neck, then turned reluctantly toward their bedroom, the gossip replaying in her mind. They'd been so in love once that when Viktor proposed two years ago, she'd agreed instantly. Did she make a mistake?
Ever since her sister Rubina's pregnancy stunt, Viktor had grown distant, and colder. But he had also denied the rumors, insisting it was all lies. And while Ruby's seduction attempts were obvious, they didn't mean he'd cross that line. Or... was she trusting him too much?
Her thoughts came to a crashing halt as she reached their bedroom door, slightly ajar. A soft, breathy moan drifted from within, making her freeze. Another moan, unmistakably familiar, filled her with dread. She knew that voice! Heart pounding loudly, Rivana pushed the door open.
And there he was!
Viktor, her beloved husband stood with Rubina, his hand on her shoulders, his other hand hovering to her breast, almost groping it. Rivana didn't need Einstein's brain to figure out what was happening. If she had arrived a minute late, she would have found him fucking Ruby hard and loud.
"Sis!" Ruby squeaked, instantly pushing Viktor away, feigning innocence. Viktor, too absorbed in Rubina's "needs" to notice, finally turned, his face paling when he saw Rivana standing there, rage burning in her eyes.
"This isn't what you think," Viktor stammered, but Rubina swiftly cut him off. She pushed him aside, walking aimlessly to find where her sister standing.
"Please, don't misunderstand!" Ruby pleaded, voice quivering. Her hands roamed down Rivana's shoulder, reaching out her hands and gripping them tightly. "My bra strap got caught in my dress, and Viktor was only helping…"
Rivana yanked her hands away, her eyes blazing. Without hesitation, she slapped Rubina, hard. The blind woman stumbled back in shock, only to be caught by Viktor, who rushed forward to support her and glared at Rivana.
"You might be blind, Rubina, but I'm not," Rivana snapped, her voice trembling with anger and pain.
"How dare you slap her?" Viktor growled, his voice thick with venom.
Rivana sneered, his glare barely hurting her anymore. She replied bitterly, "Oh, don't be jealous, honey. You'll get one too."
She raised her hand to strike him, but Viktor caught her wrist midair, twisting it painfully behind her back.
"Apologize to her. Now." Viktor demanded. He twisted her arm further, and Rivana winced as he ignored her struggles.
"You're hurting me, Viktor!" Rivana gasped, trying to pull free, tears stinging her eyes.
But Viktor didn't waver. "Apologize to Ruby, Rivana."
"Over my dead body," Rivana spat. She bit the inside of her cheek to hold back her tears, glaring at Rubina standing in front of them.
"Alright then," Viktor said, releasing her arm. He pulled out his phone, opened Dr. Slater's contact, and angled the screen for her to see. With a smug smirk, he continued, "Our son… Alan…"
Rivana's breath hitched. "Viktor…you wouldn't—" No, he wasn't cruel enough to use their baby to…
"If you don't apologize to Ruby, Alan's treatment stops tonight." Viktor declared, his voice cold and detached. "He might not wake up tomorrow."

Rivana felt the tears she had been desperately holding back spill down her cheeks. She stared at Viktor in disbelief, her heart aching and crushed into a million pieces. She knew he'd grown heartless toward them, but she never expected him to sink this low—especially over something as small as a slap.
"What?" Viktor asked, his tone mocking her shock. "You killed our baby, Rivana. Isn't it fair I do the same?" His eyes were dark with anger, pain flashing across his face as he recalled Ruby's miscarriage.
"But Alan is your baby too, Viktor!" Rivana choked, her voice raw with anguish. "You are his father!" she cried out, hot tears soaking her cheeks.
Her heart clenched painfully as she thought of Alan, their fragile six-month-old son fighting for life in the hospital. Lowering her eyes, Rivana sobbed softly, "He's your son too..."
Viktor's face hardened. "But he's sick, Rivana," he replied coldly, his words tearing fresh wounds in her heart.
Rivana looked up at him, stunned. Viktor sighed, seemingly exasperated by her reaction. "He's not a healthy child, and the doctors can't even tell us how long he'll last. With a heart that weak, he'll never be fit to inherit the Hugon name. If it weren't for you, I'd have already—"
"Killed him?" Rivana finished, her voice trembling. When he didn't respond, she demanded, "Tell me, Viktor. Would you have killed him?"
"Please stop fighting because of me!" Rubina interrupted, tears tracing down her face. She reached out blindly, finding Viktor's arm and clinging to it. "It was just a slap, Viktor," she whispered, her voice shaking in guilt. "I deserved it. Please… forgive my sister."
Viktor's earlier flicker of guilt for Alan was gone, replaced with cold anger. He wrapped his arm around Rubina, pulling her protectively close. He glared at Rivana, and commanded, his irritation boiling over. "Stop trying to change the subject. Apologize to her. Now!"
Rivana's lips parted in utter disgust, tears trailing down her face. She'd been such a fool. How could she have loved someone this vile? Staring at the two of them, the bitterness in her chest nearly overwhelmed her. But for Alan's sake, she knew she had no choice.
"I… I'm sorry," Rivana finally choked out, forcing the words from her throat, each one ripping away a piece of her self-respect.
"Nah, we didn't quite hear that." A new voice echoed from the doorway. Rivana's head snapped toward it, and her stomach twisted as she saw Rafaelo Faye, casually leaning over the frame with a cruel smirk. He was Rubina's older brother and the potential heir to the Faye family.
Rivana felt her head spin, dread settling heavily in her stomach. Of course, her stepbrother would relish the chance to humiliate her further—he always had since childhood.
Rafaelo stepped forward, joining his sister. He cast a smug glance at Rivana, the step-sister he'd always loved to torment. "I think it would sound a lot more sincere if you knelt and begged for Ruby's forgiveness."
A faint smirk played on Rubina's lips before she feigned a look of worry. "Brother, please don't pick on her," she said, her voice dripping with false concern.
Rafaelo ignored her and turned to Viktor. "Right, Viktor?"
Rivana clenched her fists, her knuckles white as she fought back her rage. She looked at Viktor, desperately hoping he would draw a line. But he merely looked back at her, expressionless, as though he approved of the idea.
"Time's ticking, Riva!" Rafaelo murmured, tapping his watch with a sneer. "Poor Alan might be waiting for you to feed him." His gaze drifted to her chest, a glint of lust in his eyes.
Rivana's eyes darkened, her body trembling with barely contained rage. She glared at the trio in front of her, the thoughts of murdering them all crossing without a cent of fear. But fate had never been on her side. Had it? If she didn't please them, her son's battle would go in vain.
Lowering her head, Rivana took a deep, trembling breath, her nails digging painfully into her palms. Just as she was about to shred her pride, a commotion erupted outside the room. Suddenly, muffled cries and panicked shouts filtered through the walls, followed by the sharp, echoing crack of gunshots.
A woman stumbled through the doorway, gasping for breath. It was Viktor's mother, Melisande Hugon. She clutched the door frame, her face pale with terror. "Your... your stepbrother is attacking us!"
"Damn it!" Rafaelo cursed, grabbing Rubina's hand and yanking her protectively to his side, ready to flee. That man was deranged to the core, hellbent on claiming the Hugon family's wealth and it was better for them to stay out of his sight.
"Where's Dad and Grandma?" Viktor demanded, rushing to his mother, panic etched on his face. Only they could protect him now.
Rivana's skin prickled with shock, but a surge of satisfaction flooded her chest. Watching the fear settle on their faces—especially her bastard husband's—brought her a dark sense of relief. He would always piss at just the name of his elder brother, Azrael Dynar Hugon.
Snapping out of her thoughts, she followed the group outside. The sight awaiting them left everyone stunned. Men in all-black uniforms roamed the property, taking control as terrified guests scattered in every direction, desperate to escape.
As they moved downstairs, Viktor glanced around and muttered, "Let's use the kitchen exit."
Rafaelo nodded, pulling Rubina along through the chaos. Rivana lingered behind, glancing around in the hopes of catching a glimpse of him. But Rafaelo grabbed her arm roughly, forcing her forward, unwilling to let her die so easily.
Gunshots fired again, sparking more frantic screams and the group threw themselves behind cover. Suddenly, someone reached them and pulled Viktor out from behind the pillar he had been hiding. Rivana smirked as he stumbled, crying out for help. Karma was indeed a bitch!
But before she could savor it, someone pushed her and she staggered forward, tripping straight into Viktor's arms. He reached out instinctively, holding her close, mistaking she had recklessly come to save him.
Bullet shots rushed in their way and one which was meant for Viktor pierced through Rivana's body, one after another, causing her eyes to widen while pain numbed her senses.
The gunfire abruptly stopped, and an eerie silence fell over the hall. Rivana collapsed, the world spinning around her as Viktor held her tightly, blood pouring from her wounds.
"You fool! Why would you try to protect me?" he grumbled, his voice thick with disbelief as he looked down at her, eyes glistening with tears.
Protect you? Rivana wanted to spit at him, to scream that she hadn't, but the pain seared through her, radiating from her back and burrowing deep into her chest. So, this is how it ends? she thought bitterly. I leave a label behind as a saintly wife, taking a bullet for my spineless husband?
Desperately, Rivana forced her head to the side, her blurry vision wanting to catch the person who had pushed her. There, standing just a few feet away, was her blind sister, Rubina, smirking in delight.
Even more unsettling? Rivana's fading vision caught her blind sister's eyes gleaming with a strange light. It was as if Rubina could see every bit of her suffering, savoring every bit of it in joy.
And that was the last thing Rivana saw before darkness engulfed her.
