Chapter 3
I'm on an unfamiliar street. A deserted street. No people, no cars, no sounds, just tall, majestic buildings reflecting the gray clouds in the sky.
As I look up, I catch a glimpse of something appearing in the distance. As I look ahead, I see a sea of zombies coming towards me, but still a long way off. Far enough for me to turn my back and walk in the opposite direction.
I don't know how long I've been walking, but somehow the zombies have come closer, so I start running to increase the distance between me and them.
Some time later, or was it a second ago? I can't say. What matters is that I found a second sea of zombies in front of me again.
Two hordes were coming towards me, one from the front and one from behind. There were left and right options for escape.
But when I took a step to go to the right, a third horde was blocking my path. And when I looked to the left, the fourth was already there looking at me. Standing still. As if they were waiting for me to do something.
Suddenly I was surrounded on all four sides, I had no escape. I didn't know what to do. My body stopped and I did nothing as the four hordes began to approach. Before I could realize it, a zombie, one I had eliminated earlier, appeared in front of me, mouth open and teeth bared, heading for my throat. I screamed, but no sound came out.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
"Huff... Huff... Huff..." I wake up gasping and my hand automatically goes to my neck, as if to check that it's still whole and not bitten.
Looking around, it takes me a while to get used to the new and familiar surroundings of the room I slept in yesterday. And waking up here in this room only confirms that everything that happened yesterday wasn't a dream like I wanted it to be.
"Tch... Damn nightmare." I complain as I get out of bed. No longer feeling the dizziness or tiredness of the day before.
I go to the bathroom first to wash my face and check the wound on my head. But as soon as I pull the door, it comes off its hinges, and I stare at it in astonishment.
"Wow..." It's the only word I could say in a situation like this.
When I move my eyes from the door, which was in my hand, to the mirror, I see that in place of the wound that should have been there, there is only a whitish line, as if the wound had closed overnight.
"What the fuck?! Is that supposed to heal so quickly?" I ask myself as I reach out to get a better look and touch where the wound was and the only thing I feel is a slight tenderness in the skin.
All the events of now remind me of the little fight yesterday, and how, without difficulty, I broke a baseball bat and crushed the zombie's head with a single blow.
Not forgetting the second zombie, which I somehow stabbed with an object that didn't have enough points. At the time, the most I was trying to do was hit the base of the brain and kill it. Not through the whole skull.
And then there's the third zombie, which I smashed the sink with its head. The zombie was a bit disfigured, but that's not the point.
I didn't think about it at the time, because I thought it was the adrenaline or the zombies' bodies that were more fragile because of the dead flesh. But it seems that I received something when I came to this God-forsaken world.
"But how much stronger am I?" That question immediately springs to mind, with an idea popping into my head soon after. The car. I could try to get up a little. But it was outside.
Shaking my head to clear away the intrusive thoughts, I start to leave the room, only to close the door soon after.
The smell of the dead I left in the corridor is worse than before. Even flies have started to surround the bodies.
Today's priority: Dig three graves.
I might not have known them, but they were the parents of the original Dean. And the third one I had no idea who he was, but I'd bury him anyway.
Opening the door and facing the smell that I would soon have to get used to if I wanted to survive in this world, I headed for the backyard, where I saw that it was a relatively large space.
A tool shed, a swimming pool that was full, a round table with four chairs and what was most striking about the yard. A beer tree.
Walking up to the tool shed, I soon noticed that it was locked. But with a mischievous grin, I grabbed both handles and pulled. But this time, I held back the force to break only the lock, keeping the doors in the portal.
Inside the little house, there were various gardening tools, including scissors, tools, brooms, a lawnmower and finally the spade.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
1 hour later:
It took me a whole hour to dig the three pits. Which I'm sure would have taken much longer normally.
I dug them under the cherry tree, where I found initials engraved inside a heart on the bark.
Now for the hard part.
Returning to the house, I grabbed two sheets, wrapped the first two bodies in them and took them outside.
For the third zombie, I first have to search him to find out his name. Luckily, I found a driver's license with the guy's name on it.
Terry Campbell. Whoever he is, I don't care. I just do the same thing as the other two. I wrap them up and take them out.
I bury the bodies one by one and in less than 20 minutes it's all done. To top it off, I take the round table that was in the yard, a knife and start writing down their names.
Placing the table, now a tombstone, against the tree, I say a little prayer as a way of paying respect to the dead.
When I get back to the house, I start exploring the rooms upstairs. Almost all of them are just guest rooms, which, apart from the basics, have nothing in them.
Opening the door to the last unexplored room, I find an office of sorts. A long table in the middle, a chair on the other side and a slightly more modern computer than the one in the room where I woke up.
The room was beautifully decorated with books, office objects, a floor plan and even a very detailed map of Georgia behind the chair.
I started to check the drawers, but there were only papers and auxiliary objects to help me with my work, nothing else.
"The map is going to be the most important thing here." I say as I take the map board off the wall, only to reveal that behind it is a safe. "Heh... I think I just burned my tongue." I joke as I give an excited smile. I hope it's not just money.
The only problem is: what's the password to this shit?
