Chapter 14: Abyssal

Everything was ready and set for the mission. Jolien grabbed a few things and her box of course and wheeled them all out to the carriage.

She had a smile on her face. She was meant to miss this place and maybe hug her mother before leaving but she was doing the opposite. She was very happy that she was leaving the place.

The carriage was on standby waiting for her and Zay to get in. Just when she thought her mother would not see her off. Her mother walked out of the building. A plain face and her head high as usual.

Jolien stood, ready for her reprimanding or any other thing she would do.

"You are leaving" her mother said like she wasn't seeing the obvious.

Jolien saw her force a smile.

"You've always wanted me to leave so I might as well speed up the process"

"Keep quiet when your mother is speaking," the woman said. Jolien bowed her head. She wasn't expecting much from her mother afterall.

But what happened next was unexpected. Mrs Irene pulled her for a hug and her eyes widened. It was a rare feeling so she wanted to bask in it even for a few minutes but her mother had to stop the whole thing.

"Remember to get someone or I get one for you" she whispered. They broke apart, Jolien almost teleported into the carriage but she held herself, not sparing her mother a glance she got into it.

"Take good care of her, Zay" it was her father. Whatever.

Her brothers were at the side and they could only watch as she left.

"Yes… Your Majesty" he said before getting in to see Jolien's upset look.

"I might be the one taking care of you there" she huffed before looking out through the window.

The ride started and soon the Palace was out of sight. Jolien wanted to cry but smiling was better. She was free.

They passed the huge markets and some gambling shops before they got out of the city. It was going to be a long ride and Zay was already asleep when she turned to him.

"Take care of me?" She scoffed. She knew that she was the one in charge of that.

They were soon very far from the border at some sort of valley that had mountains around it. It was stony with no life growing on the place.

But there was a strange energy around. One that made her toes curl. She looked at the people on the carriage. They were all humans asides her and Zay. She prayed that it was just the energy and there were no enemies around.

After a few gallops, the feel of the energy seemed to reduce and she leaned against the seat receiving some air.

Till the carriage suddenly came to an abrupt halt. She almost flew out of her seat.

"What's going on?" She asked as she looked out through the window. The footman walked over to her.

"There's a small mishap from the carriage," he said.

"We will get it fixed right away"

She sighed in relief. At least it wasn't a monster, she's not prepared for that.

"Joe" she snapped her head to the side and Zay was awake.

"What happened?... Did the carriage stop?" He asked and she fought to stop an eye roll.

"Finally, you're awake Protector Zay" she hissed.

He raised his brows.

"I will give you a quick breakdown of what happened… the carriage had a fault"

He stood up at once and moved to the door.

'What's he doing?'

"I will go and check it out" and with that he was out of the carriage and she remained at my spot like the Princess she is with a cup of tea.

She looked up. It was getting dark and they weren't moving. She got out of the carriage as well. There was no one around her.

'What the hell' she thought but the fear was creeping in till she heard the voices of people laughing at a distance. She almost relaxed but on second thought who were they?.

She pulled out a little knife from her bag, just in case they were creeping monsters that could or worse Shadow Demons. She shuddered at the thought.

When she got closer, she saw the red flames of fire and then the three men that had left her in the carriage.

"Princess" the servants bowed while Zay remained indifferent. She walked to Zay almost punching him in the face but he was lucky to dodge.

"You left me there… what if something happened?"

"Nothing can happen to the Princess "

"I don't mean me… I mean what if something happened to you guys" they looked at one another. She smirked.

Last time she checked, she's not a damsel in distress that needs saving.

She sat with them. No one would see her now and know that she's royalty and she liked it that way.

"We wanted to make a fire because it's already late and we will go first thing tomorrow morning," the footman said.

Jolien could only agree. It was already dark and they couldn't keep moving.

After a while they laid the heavy clothes on the rocky ground. It was so uncomfortable but Jolien had to make do with it. She had stayed in the worst places afterall.

"You should cover yourself from the cold," Zay said.

"No I don't need that" she pushed the blanket away and settled on the other one that way. She can get some sleep for a while before she might not sleep again like the other days.

Shifting slowly till she found a comfortable spot before she fell in the darkness in her mind, some sort of abyss. She just wished for one thing. A peaceful sleep

Just that will take a whole lot to achieve. A lot that might never be possible.

Just with the close of her eyes she heard her name again in her dreams, it was him and this time he was in her dreams.
