The world outside the windshield blurred past me, the road stretching into a hazy ribbon that seemed endless. My hands gripped the steering wheel harder than they needed to, knuckles white against the leather.

I had no idea how long I’d been driving. The sun had begun to dip lower, casting long shadows over the landscape, but I couldn’t bring myself to turn around and head home.
