The three ANBU looked at the scroll in Kurenai's hand, and one of them, a tall, muscular man, growled, "Hand over the scroll, or I'll have to—"
He was cut off as the ANBU beside him slapped him on the back.
"What was that for?" he demanded, irritated.
The other ninja rolled his eyes. "Are you blind? Are you thinking of fighting her? Injure her, and Kazuya-sama might tear you apart."
"What do you mean?" The large ANBU looked at Kurenai, puzzled.
Black hair, red eyes, and a female ANBU… he took a closer look.
His eyes widened in shock.
It was Kurenai Yuhi.
"A-apologies! Excuse me!" the large ANBU shouted as he quickly vanished.
"Sorry to bother you!" The other two followed suit, disappearing as though they'd seen nothing.
Yeah, right, they thought. We're ready to fight tooth and nail to become Kazuya-sama's personal ANBU—but fight Kurenai?
Forget it.
The ANBU all knew of Kurenai's close relationship with Kazuya; they were practically a couple already. Trying to take the scroll from her? Pure suicide.
Kurenai was left staring after them, stunned.
Why does it suddenly feel like this supposedly intense ANBU training just got a lot less interesting?
…
Elsewhere, Shisui Uchiha hadn't gone looking for a Heaven Scroll. Instead, he made his way directly to the central tower.
"To pass, we need to reach the tower with a scroll and stay for twenty minutes…"
Shisui Uchiha muttered to himself, "These rules are encouraging combat. As long as you're confident in your abilities, just head straight for the central tower and take the scrolls from others when they arrive."
Before long, Shisui reached the central tower area. Unsurprisingly, several other elite ANBU members had arrived early, aware of the selection process and prepared to act.
"Shisui Uchiha?"
"Body Flicker Shisui?"
"He's here already?"
Several of the ANBU present, all of them highly skilled jonin, exchanged uneasy glances as Shisui approached. None of them dared to make the first move. Going up against someone as renowned as Shisui was too risky—better to avoid a double loss that would leave the prize to someone else.
Not every ANBU was as cautious, though. Elsewhere in the forest, tempers flared, and some ninjas had already started fighting for scrolls.
Boom! Boom!
The forest resounded with explosions from paper bombs. The rule against deadly force? Forgotten. This was about their futures, and no one was holding back.
"Wood Style: Silent Strangling Jutsu!"
"Wood Style: Wood Locking Wall!"
"Wood Style: Deep Forest Creation!"
"Wood Style: Spear Barrage!"
In one area, wood-style techniques were erupting in waves. Tenkai, who had entered the forest with confidence after quickly finding a scroll, now found himself hunted by several ANBU. A battle broke out almost instantly.
The ANBU were relentless. Even Tenkai, with his Wood Style, was feeling the strain of this much firepower.
"I can't lose…," Tenkai gritted his teeth. He knew how much Lord Kazuya believed in him; failure wasn't an option.
But his pursuers weren't amateurs either: four were jonin, and one was a high-level chunin. If not for his Wood Style, he'd have been overwhelmed already.
"Take him down!"
"Let's team up and finish this!"
"Someone from the Foundation can't become one of Lord Kazuya's guard!"
"Agreed! Team up first, then we can settle who wins later!"
A quick exchange of glances, and they all turned on Tenkai together. Determined, they began unleashing a barrage of attacks, mainly using taijutsu and genjutsu to conserve their chakra.
Without realizing it, the intense battles in the forest triggered a continuous drop of attribute fragments, invisible to everyone but Kazuya.
[You have collected 200 Chakra points]
[You have collected 300 Chakra points]
[You have collected 500 Chakra points]
[You have collected 30 Yang Style points]
[You have collected 50 Wood Style points]
Kazuya, standing far away, couldn't help but smile under his mask as he watched Tenkai fend off his opponents.
Now, this was what he called a worthy investment—breaking Danzo's plans to recruit Tenkai had paid off. The attribute drops alone were worth it.
"Come on, don't hold back! Push Tenkai to his limits! Get him to show his true power!"
The battle around Tenkai grew fiercer. Four ANBU jonins were still unable to take him down, proof of just how much his Wood Style had evolved.
After all, this selection was a golden opportunity to join Lord Kazuya's unit, so they were done holding back. Nothing would stop them now.
Boom! Boom!
Explosions shook the forest, filling the air with sound and fury.
[You have collected 500 Wood Style: Wood Locking Wall experience points]
[Your Wood Style: Wood Locking Wall has leveled up to Lv.2 (0/1000)]
[You have collected 600 Wood Style: Silent Strangling Jutsu experience points]
The constant barrage of attribute drops soon leveled up Kazuya's own Wood Style. Kazuya sighed with satisfaction.
"If only there were more Wood Style users. Maybe someday Orochimaru will perfect his Reanimation Jutsu, though, with the Second Hokage's skill level, I wonder if the reanimation would even be able to use Wood Style."
He glanced at the Elephant standing nearby.
"Wood Style is incredible," Elephant commented. "That Wood Locking Wall can withstand over a dozen paper bombs! Hard to imagine how powerful the First Hokage must've been."
Kazuya glanced at him, chuckling. Trust the best ANBU commentator to start explaining even now.
