Chapter 5: Chapter 4 - Brawl.

I almost immediately regretted my decision to help the girl as soon as the first werewolf's fist connected with my chest. These brutes were strong, extremely strong, and I didn't know this girl from Adam. She lay still in her fetal position at the base of the tree, unmoving. Was she unconscious? Hell, was she even breathing after a blow like that? I couldn't tell. Nor could I focus on her at the moment, I had to focus on the fight at hand or I'd end up in the same position as she was. If not worse.

I gathered myself and blocked the next hit effortlessly. Crouching into a defensive position, I snatched my pocketknife from my boot and bared my fangs, letting a hiss escape my lips and revealing what I was. "I thought I smelled a vamp," the mutt barked at me. "At least I don't smell like a piss poor wet dog," I replied smugly before slashing my knife towards his face. He backtracked skillfully before pushing his feet forward, running into me and ramming me into the wolf behind me. The man wrapped one arm around my waist, the other grabbed at my hand applying painful pressure, trying to get me to release my weapon. I was running out of options, and it was hard to think with his stench around me. I stomped down hard on his foot, twisting myself so that my head would be level with his arm and bit down hard on his wrist, injecting as much of my potent venom as I could. He yelped and released me, falling to the ground in agonizing pain. Vampire venom was fatal to werewolves, and not a very pleasant way to die. It attacked every cell of their nervous system, twisting their muscles into tight spasms.

I barely had enough time to gloat at my fallen attacker before the next one jumped on me. "You bitch," he yelled as his jaws snatched at me, trying to bite at anything he could reach. I pushed my palm against his face and landed an upper cut with my other hand causing him to stagger backwards. I let my wings shoot me up and landed gracefully on top of his shoulders, grabbing under his chin I pulled with all of my strength until I finally heard the tendons in his neck snap. His knees buckled under him, and he fell into a paralyzed heap on the ground. The Alpha was still in the same place I had left him. A crumpled mess, his broken jaw hanging slightly to the left. I noticed the shallowness of his breathing and turned to check on the girl before he could heal.

She was still breathing, jagged and painful breaths, but alive and surprisingly, awake. I scooped her into my arms, she weighed next to nothing. She stirred slightly, whimpering in pain as my forearm hit her ribcage. She cried quietly as I held her. "Can you stand?" I asked her. She shook her head no, focusing on her breathing. "Can you talk?" I asked, she grunted and shook her head no again. I had no idea what I was going to do to help this girl, but I had to at least try. I lifted us up into the night sky, being careful not to jar her as my wings carried us up. Far away from the monsters at our feet. I wasn't about to stick around and give them a chance to heal and awaken.
