This bandit-extermination mission posed no challenge to their adventure group. They could have accepted more difficult tasks. However, knowing that every day these bandits lived, more people would suffer, they accepted the mission and pursued their target relentlessly.
"We've been out for a while, and the food we brought isn't enough. Let's resupply at a nearby village," Olivia said.
Everyone nodded in agreement.
Some time later…
"Look, what kind of marvel is this?" Tia exclaimed, her eyes wide with wonder. A volcano stood before them, encased in ice. The surrounding temperature was noticeably high, yet this icy spectacle persisted. It was truly magical.
"There's a strong magical aura permeating the area," Coran added. As both a warrior and a mage, she was as sensitive to magical fluctuations as Tia.
Olivia was stunned. The world seemed to unfold before her. The more she experienced, the more she realized how much more mysterious the world was than she had ever imagined.
Ice magic encasing a volcano? It was hard to fathom. A temporary freeze would be understandable, but this… This was truly shocking. The fire element within a volcano was incredibly intense and volatile. Maintaining such a freeze would require immense magical power. Just how powerful was the magic that achieved this?
"Let's go. There are many wonders in the world. We can follow the river to find a village," Coran said. She was unaware that she was walking in her father's footsteps.
Upon their arrival at the village, the villagers eyed them warily. Seeing their apprehension, Tia smiled. "Hello everyone. We are an adventure group passing through. We'd like to resupply here and mean no harm. Please rest assured."
The villagers relaxed, their faces breaking into smiles. As long as they weren't bandits, all was well. They were simple villagers, content with their fields and a peaceful life.
"Are you all from an adventure group, sisters?" a boy ran up to them, his eyes shining with curiosity. He looked about twelve or thirteen, but perhaps due to malnutrition, he appeared rather thin.
"Yes, we are. We just defeated a group of vicious bandits," Tia replied.
"Wow! That's amazing!" the boy exclaimed. Bandits were feared by all villages. They wreaked havoc wherever they went, pillaging and burning, leaving a trail of misery.
"Can you take us to buy some food? We can tell you stories about our adventures," Tia offered.
"Really?"
"Of course."
"Okay, I'll take you there."
If Lin Fan were here, he would have recognized the boy instantly. It was the same boy he had saved years ago. He had grown into a young man.
Coran observed the village, comparing it to Bubble Village. Bubble Village truly was a wonderful place.
"Do you know how that volcano became frozen?" Coran asked the boy.
"Of course, I know! A kind big brother helped us," the boy replied.
Intrigued, they wanted to know the details.
"Can you tell us about it?"
"Certainly. Our village's river, which we depended on, had dried up. Then one day…"
The boy could forget anything, but not that day. For their village, that big brother was their savior.
Coran and the others listened, astonished. They had never imagined such a powerful being existed. The village's river drying up must have been caused by the volcano's eruption, cutting off the water source. So that's how the volcano became frozen. To achieve such a feat required unimaginable magical power, something beyond their capabilities.
Just then, a dragon's roar echoed through the sky.
Coran and the others, in the midst of purchasing supplies, paled. If they hadn't misheard, that was the roar of a dragon. Why would a dragon appear here? Long ago, dragons had encroached upon the empire's borders. The empire attempted to repel them but suffered a devastating defeat in the first battle. Later, for unknown reasons, the dragons retreated and hadn't been seen since. But now… why had one appeared?
They rushed outside and saw a massive dragon soaring in the distance. Its terrifying draconic aura radiated outwards, causing the village's livestock to cower. Some, too frightened, died from sheer terror.
"Don't panic. Let's see what this dragon wants," Coran said. Dragons were essentially bugs in the system of existence. Even dragon hatchlings were powerful, and adult dragons were typically Saint-level. This was a terrifying prospect. Others toiled tirelessly to achieve such a realm, while dragons simply had to wait for their growth. It seemed incredibly unfair. However, if anyone knew that dragons were considered delicacies on some dinner tables, they would surely say… fair, incredibly fair. Even Saint-level dragons met such tragic ends.
Olivia and the others were tense. The villagers, having never seen such a creature, were pale with fear, terrified of being eaten.
Their fears were realized. The dragon's target was clearly the village.
"It's coming this way!" Olivia cried.
Tia gripped her staff tightly, her face etched with fear. She was rarely afraid, but this situation was truly terrifying.
Coran frowned. "I'll distract it. You take the villagers and hide."
"Coran, don't be impulsive! That's a dragon. We can't possibly defeat it," Olivia pleaded.
"I know, but my father told me to face any difficulty with courage. Helping the weak is a worthwhile endeavor. Don't worry, I have a teleportation scroll. Once I've led the dragon away and you've settled the villagers, I'll retreat," Coran said resolutely.
Just as they were about to argue, Coran sprinted towards the village outskirts. "Hurry and hide the villagers!"
In the sky, the dragon soared, its massive eyes fixed on the scene below.
"What a nice place. They wouldn't let me come out and play, saying there are scary humans who like to eat us. Hmph, it's all lies. Who would dare eat a great and proud dragon?"
Moby was the son of the Dragon Emperor, possessing the most mystical dragon bloodline. He had inherited the Dragon Emperor's Dragon Language Magic and could transform into a human form, something ordinary dragons couldn't do.
Suddenly, Moby felt a stinging sensation on his skin. Looking down, he saw a tiny human firing ice arrows at him.
He scoffed. Foolish, insignificant human. Didn't they know that Moby was immune to magic? This was a trait reserved for the noblest of dragons.
"I'll play with you for a bit," Moby thought, changing direction and flying towards Coran. His enormous body cast a shadow over the ground. A burst of dragon breath erupted, impacting the earth and causing a violent explosion. The shockwave rippled outwards.
Coran felt the force of the blast and her expression turned serious. She couldn't engage the dragon directly; the difference in their strength was too vast.
"You run quite fast," Moby remarked, unhurried. He was toying with her. He still couldn't understand why this tiny human had the audacity to attack him. Did they really think he was easy prey? It was incredibly irritating.
Coran was relieved that the dragon wasn't attacking fiercely. This gave her time to delay him while Olivia and Tia hid the villagers.
Time ticked by.
Moby grew bored. He didn't want to play anymore.
Coran sensed the time was right. She pulled out the teleportation scroll and began chanting the incantation. A magic circle appeared beneath her feet. This was her only escape route.
But at that moment, something astonishing happened. The dragon in the sky chanted words she didn't understand, words that seemed to fall outside the realm of magic.
"Anti-Magic Field!"
A Dragon Language Magic domain. Within this field, magic elements ceased to exist. Even magic scrolls were rendered useless.
The magic circle beneath Coran's feet vanished.
She knew she was in grave danger.
Moby flew over Coran's head, his powerful tail whipping towards her. The force of the blow sent her hair flying. The power was like a blade against her face.
She swung her greatsword at the dragon's tail.
BOOM!
A deafening roar erupted.
Coran couldn't withstand the force and was sent flying, landing far away, unconscious. Moby, however, was surprised. This tiny human possessed incredible strength! His tail actually ached.
But compared to a mighty dragon… this strength was insignificant.
Moby, as a proud dragon, was annoyed by the unprovoked attack. He slowly descended towards Coran, wanting to see why this tiny human dared to attack him.
Suddenly, he noticed a light emanating from the human, a powerful aura that threatened his very soul.
Moby flapped his wings in fright and shot into the sky, his eyes wide with terror, his heart pounding. A sense of extreme danger washed over him.
No…
Run.
I have to run.
Without a second thought, Moby flapped his wings and flew towards the dragon territory. He remembered what the other dragons had told him.
There were terrifying demons among humans who loved to eat dragons.
This human was clearly weak.
But that aura… there was no mistaking it.
If he stayed…
He would definitely die.
With that thought, he returned to his territory to hide and assess the situation.
Back in the village, Lin Fan, putting down his work, sensed his daughter's predicament and instantly vanished.
Growth required sacrifice.
It required facing danger.
But as a father, he couldn't bear to see his daughter in peril.
He had just one question…
Who was causing trouble?
