Chapter 23: C23: Multiple Endings

I continued...

Aside from the META elements, the plot of Undertale itself is truly captivating. There are many interesting and charming characters throughout the game. Many would find it like this, while experienced professionals won't, but my market is the first one.

For instance,

Take Sans— when you first met him in the game, he will greet you with a handshake and a fart cushion. Then there's Papyrus, who enthusiastically will try to block your progress with puzzles.

Sans, despite his lazy demeanour, always enjoys teasing his brother Papyrus with skeleton-themed puns. Meanwhile, Papyrus, is always determined to stop you with his puzzles, often revealing the answers when you will struggle or If you don't actively solve them.

Then there's Alphys, the nerdy scientist who adds her own quirky charm to the story.

One of the most shocking moments was what Sans revealed in the grand hallway before you faced the final boss. This is where Sans will judge you for everything you have done in the game.

From Sans, you will learn that EXP wasn't just experience points—it stood for "execution points." Each time you kill a monster, your execution points will increase. The more you killed, the higher your Level of Violence (LV) became. LV wasn't simply "LOVE," as you will think—it was a reflection of the violence You'd commit in the game.

In Undertale, every action you took carried weight. EXP and LV weren't just numbers—they represented the consequences of your choices and the violence you enacted.

This is where Undertale subverts from the typical RPG setting.

As players, we're used to killing monsters to level up, thinking it's just part of the game. But Undertale flips this expectation on its head. It shows you, The Hippocrates you are.

For many of us who first experience it, they play through the common ending, where meeting Hua Hua leaves them stunned by what just happened. However, if they choose not to kill Hua Hua at the end of the normal route, they learn how to achieve a peaceful ending directly from him.

In this peaceful ending, they don't kill any monsters. Instead, they make friends with each other by talking and connecting with them. As they progress, they discover that each monster has its own unique personality.

The scariest-looking monsters can have the most adorable sides. Take Undyne, for example—she's a perfect embodiment of fierce arrogance! But as she says:

-----------------------------------------------------

"[Listen humans, we don't just want to be your friends.]"

"[We are going to be best friends.]"

"[I want you to be so into me that you can't escape.]"

"[This is my perfect revenge.]"

-----------------------------------------------------

Thanks to Papyrus's "boneheaded law," the legendary captain of the Royal Guard ends up becoming our friend. She even teaches us a cooking class, despite burning her house down in the process.

And so, we find ourselves befriending all of these characters—Papyrus, Toriel, Undyne—and it's through these interactions that the world of Undertale truly comes alive.

Especially when facing the final boss, the king, and the sheep mother's son, the lamb, it made countless players, cry.

In this battle, when you die, it's not considered a game failure. Instead, a line of subtitles appears: Your resolve refuses.

Finally, with the help of the determination of countless friends, You will defeat the lamb. At the same time, You will also learn some of the game's backstory from lamb's own words.

-----------------------------------------------------

A long, long time ago, a human child fell into the underground, was rescued by the lamb, and was taken in by the king and the mother. They became best friends, but for some reason, the lamb lost that friend. In grief, the lamb absorbed the soul of the first child, turning into an extremely powerful being with the ability to pass through the barrier. It left the underground and came to the surface to fulfill the last wish of that friend.

However, the lamb was attacked by humans who mistakenly thought it had killed the child. Wounded and broken, the lamb hobbled back home, and, in the end, turned to dust, scattering across the garden. Its determination was injected into a golden flower, which became the origin of the little flower.

In this final battle, the lamb was finally freed and relieved, letting go of the pain it had clung to for so long. Both the normal and peaceful endings were achieved.

-----------------------------------------------------

While players should feel satisfied with this, curiosity—their curiosity—urges them to explore another ending, driven by the darker side of the little flower. And in that ending, they will feel an unspeakable shock and a deep sense of spiritual contemplation.

Here is one such player~

Sitting in front of his computer, his expression was serious. There are 3 left in the current game, which appeared as a prompt on my screen.

In the once lively underground world, the monsters had been slaughtered, and only three remained to be found. The tavern was silent, its warmth long gone, replaced by emptiness. He couldn't shake this strange feeling that had settled over him.

Because of his experience with "Magic Mirror," he was also curious about Chen Xu's new work, "Undertale."

The disdain after just entering the game, and the shock of the customs clearance.

After reaching the normal and peaceful ending, he became curious about the so-called killing ending.

But now he feels a twinge of regret.

In the last game, the monsters that had been his best friends died in his very own hands one by one, all just to satisfy the conditions set up by the plot.

Including Papyrus, that skeleton who was like a little angel; even in his last moments, he believed he could correct my evil.

What a good excuse. I must know better than anyone how soothing this approach can be!

But at least I am better than those hypocrites who stand on the side of evil wearing the mask of kindness, those poor souls who want to see it but are too cowardly to do it themselves!

The narration in the game is filled with irony.

But I didn't stop.

All monsters can be killed in one shot.

Until I met the captain of the royal guard, again.

Next to a waterfall, Andyin appeared and blocked a bean-like monster.

As captain of the Royal Guard, she had been guarding the monsters of the underground, but now she says she has let them down.

Just as she was about to die, a passionate BGM started to play.

The wind howled, accompanied by flashes of white light.

The determination as if reappeared.

The hero reinvented himself with this "determination" to save the world.

Listening to the passionate track called "Fighting against Real Heroes," I felt a deep irony.

The monsters of the game were named heroes.

And here I was, the protagonist whom I controlled, doing what the monsters should be doing.

This was the toughest fight I'd ever faced in a game. The Morality has been eating my conscience since this route began.

After struggling to defeat the Captain, I continued moving forward and eventually arrived at a familiar place.

The front hall of the throne, resplendent and splendid, stood before a familiar figure.

Shansi would judge my actions here.

And now?

No more nonsense.

It went directly into the combat phase.

"What a beautiful day today!"

"The birds are singing and the flowers are blooming!"

"On a day like this, people like you..."

"Should be in hell... burned!"

As soon as the voice faded, an offensive like a tide swept in, instantly killing me when I was unprepared.

Keep trying, keep trying.

Finally, when I was about to defeat Shansi, it seemed to have thought of a way to never move on its own turn.

But unfortunately for Shansi, it still failed.

While it rested, I quietly moved to attack and kill Shansi.

Then Hua Hua appeared, but unlike in the normal ending, this time Hua Hua was filled with fear against me and he prayed while moving his twisted little branches that he should not be killed.

In the next moment, eight consecutive knives cut the little flower into pieces separating its neck, branches, and petals, while scattering its roots.

Everything seemed over, but then someone who stunned me appeared.

Chara, the first human who fell into the underground world, has risen from death.

Two choices appeared in front of me: to choose to destroy the world or not to destroy it.

Looking at the dead darkness and the strange Chara, I felt a deep sense of depression.

At first, I just wanted to know the plot of this ending.

I also regretted it halfway through but didn't stop.

And now, that feeling of regret was even stronger.

So I chose no.

But the next moment, Chara's expression turned gloomy.

"You seem to have misunderstood something. When was it your turn to call the shots?"

As Chara's words appeared, the knife light flashed.

The game screen trembled, and a series of 9999 blood-red damage numbers covered the screen.

Then the entire game shut down automatically.

Is this the end of the genocide line?

I took a deep breath and pursed my lips, feeling the weight of my choices.
