Chapter 23: Shattered Allegiances
Rachel's words hung in the air like a challenge. "I've been working with the Agency," she admitted, her eyes locked on mine.
Nova's gun was drawn, trained on Rachel. "You're a traitor."
Rachel's expression remained calm. "I did what I had to do, Nova. To protect Ethan."
I felt like I'd been punched in the gut. "Protect me? By lying to me?"
Rachel's eyes pleaded for understanding. "I was trying to keep you safe, Ethan. The Agency promised to leave you alone if I cooperated."
Maya's voice cut through the tension. "What did you tell them, Rachel?"
Rachel hesitated before speaking. "I gave them the research. Your parents' research, Ethan."
Nova's grip on her gun tightened. "You're coming with us, Rachel."
As Nova dragged Rachel from the SUV, I felt a mix of emotions: anger, betrayal, and sadness.
Suddenly, a black helicopter descended from the sky, its spotlight blinding.
"We've got company," Maya warned, grabbing my arm.
