Chapter 57: The Smile of a Demon

Only Trevor accompanied Jun, and just by looking at him, it was clear that he was a great warrior. However, to the eyes of the people in this place, if Jun could buy Trevor, they, who controlled this city, could buy him too.

"You must be from a wealthy family, but remember, as long as men exist in this world, my family will have double the money and riches," Gild said with a cold stare toward the arrogant young man who had entered. To him, Jun was nothing more than an idiotic child.

Watching the behavior of this arrogant fool, Jun smiled silently. There was no doubt these youths didn't fully grasp the dangerous world they lived in. Of course, Jun wasn't someone to teach them, and he wasn't one to go giving life lessons to any fly that crossed his path.

"They say there are big bets here, and that's precisely why I came. It's a shame this betting house is so small and damp to enjoy comfortably, but if you want to lose your money, it's a good way to start my day in this city." Jun sat down, propping his feet up on the table, narrowly missing Gild's face.

Trevor, a bit disappointed by the state of the place, agreed with Jun's words. This place was a dump, likely with little money to offer. But as long as he could play here a bit, the rest of the day wouldn't matter.

Crack!

Trevor tried to sit in a wooden chair from afar, but it couldn't hold his weight and collapsed under him. He stood up and walked over to where Jun had seated himself. "Yeah, this place stinks. All I see are drunks, and no one's playing. What a lousy betting house."

"Dear guests, you'll be entering the special zone of our betting house. Please, come inside." The manager of the establishment appeared, showing the utmost respect to the guests who had arrived just minutes before.

Exuding an arrogant and dominant attitude, Jun smiled and walked inside, followed by an old, withered man carrying an old stick as a cane. Inside was a large table, so he sat on a good chair and propped his legs up on the now spotless table. His current demeanor perfectly reflected his character, completely aligned with his nature.

"Well, gentlemen, it doesn't matter if you're dogs or cats, nobles or vagrants. As long as you have money, you can sit at this table. As usual in places like this, don't expect to win, because you'll always lose against my good friend Trevor," Jun said with a provocative smile toward Trevor.

"I thought he was your slave."

"If I were you, I'd regret those words. But since I don't care about you, let's play." Jun knew all these guys would be dead by nightfall.

"You're a very straightforward young man, and I like that," Gild praised Jun's behavior, sensing that his background might be as great as his own. He relaxed and adopted a more neutral stance.

"Am I a straightforward person?"

Trevor glanced at Jun and said, "I don't think you're straightforward."

"I think the same." Jun began laughing with Trevor, both realizing they had these idiots tied to a tree without them even knowing it.

Gild-eyed Jun while speaking, "Before you arrived, we were playing dice with some wealthy merchants. Unfortunately, they couldn't continue as the stakes rose over time. How about we keep playing? I'm curious if someone like you has the guts to play dice at this table."

"Why does he talk like the villains in novels?" Jun thought, a bit distracted.

"A dice game?" Jun asked aloud. "What do we have to fear from your pathetic group of paupers?"

Trevor, suddenly roped into this bet, grew excited by the competitive aura and ignored any semblance of authority in the game. He placed his right hand on Jun's shoulder and said, "Yeah, we've got nothing to fear."

Gild's eyes nearly popped out of their sockets at the sight of the pair's behavior. It was completely irrational how they acted—a kid and a giant man talking like they were friends, which was really strange.

"Since you two are together, my companions and I will pool our money to face your supposed great wealth. By the way, may I know your name?" Gild asked, glaring coldly at Jun as he sat down.

"Ha, ha, ha, you can call me Jun. That's enough since after today, we won't be speaking again." Jun replied as he sat more comfortably next to Trevor.

"Quick, serve some tea to the guests!" The manager shouted, sweating nervously at the sudden turn of events in his betting house.

A couple of cups of tea were placed in front of Jun and Trevor simultaneously. Gild grabbed his own wine glass, showing off as if it were something to admire.

"Does this stuff have sugar? I don't like things that aren't sweet." Trevor wrinkled his nose as he inspected the tea.

"I have high-quality sugar in my reserves, but those sugar cubes are for my beautiful white horse." Jun pulled a glass jar from his jacket. "But you can use this powdered sugar. Don't use too much, though; it's not enjoyable if you overdo it."

Gild nearly choked on his wine, seeing where Jun had pulled the sugar from. "Where the hell did that come from?"

Of course, this refined cane sugar was one of the processes Jun created in a faster and simpler way, thus increasing its quality.

At that moment, Jun, who had observed the expressions of the foolish youths before him, showed a cold expression. After taking a sip of the tea, he spat it out into the face of one of Gild's friends and said, "Do you seriously serve such low-quality tea to your guests? Your service is pathetic. Trevor, do you actually like this kind of tea?"

Trevor, before adding sugar to his tea, had smelled it and showed some disgust. He set the tea aside and began eating the sugar on its own. He wasn't much of a tea fan, especially when it was low quality, as Jun had pointed out.

This spectacle was escalating quickly. Both of them waited for the others to explode so they could kill them.

Jun had a powerful body, far beyond the reach of common humans, having trained since he was nine years old. But what he noticed in the tea was a certain smell, indicating a substance had been added—possibly anything from aphrodisiacs to different types of poison.

Upon closer inspection of the cup, it seemed the problem wasn't just with the contents but also with where it was held. After confirming it was some kind of trap, Jun tossed the cup aside.

Crack!

The cup shattered into a thousand pieces, spilling its contents onto the floor. This action snapped everyone out of their daze, unsure of how to react.

Trevor was quite surprised, but after seeing Jun's actions, he whispered, "What are you doing?"

"The tea's contaminated. Did you lose your sense of smell? Good thing mine's sharp." Jun grabbed Trevor's cup of tea and threw it so hard that Gild only felt a strong gust of wind pass his cheek before the cup smashed against the wall behind him.

Crack!
