Chapter 7: Alert and cautious

Sienna squinted as her head throbbed. She drifted between consciousness and sleep and struggled to wake up. Taking deep breaths to ease the pain, she groaned while her eyes fluttered open. The light in the room stung her eyes, and she had to blink a few times to adjust to the sudden brightness.

Sienna felt disoriented. However, that didn't prevent the alarm bells in her mind from ringing when she saw the strange room she was in. But when she heard the beeps behind her and the memories from some time ago returned, she understood what was happening and where she was.

The scene of the accident came back to her and she recalled how she had fainted in the car. She even remembered the man who had pulled her out, especially his vivid chestnut brown eyes marred with concern.

Sienna tried to get up. But the moment she did so, her world spun, forcing her to lay down immediately. Her eyes blurred for a moment and everything went hazy. Blinking a few times, she tried to clear her mind and gradually, everything became limpid again.

However, her relief was short-lived. Her muscles tensed when she thought about Anthony. Struggling with all her might, Sienna forced herself up and endured the discomfort in her body. Not just her head, even her body was in pain and she felt utterly disconcerted.

"Please lie down, Miss. You have injured your head." Frank, who had just entered the ward, rushed in when he saw her awake.

"Frank," Sienna massaged her head as she looked at him, "when did you arrive here?"

"Miss, it's been a few hours. How do you feel? Let me call the doctor first." Frank pressed the button beside her bed, calling the nurse on duty.

"What about Anthony? Is he okay?" Sienna leaned against the pillow and frowned slightly while she lowered her hand.

"Miss, Anthony is fine. Don't worry," Frank said maintaining a calm stance.

But Sienna knew otherwise. How could Anthony be fine when she was in pain and wounded? Frank was lying to her not to worry her. Sienna was certain of it.

"Frank, tell me honestly. What happened to Anthony?"

"Miss, he is..."

"Frank," Sienna warned him, her tone low and threatening and Frank clasped his lips shut, forcing his lie down his throat.

"Miss, Anthony is still unconscious. But he is out of danger."

"And?" Sienna knew that Frank was hiding the truth from her. His eyes said it all.

Frank gulped when he discerned he couldn't hide the truth from Sienna. "And his ribs are broken. But he is out of danger. Really."

Sienna's heart dropped and her face lost all its color. 'Anthony's ribs are broken? He is injured because of me.' The thought kept repeating in her mind, making her feel terrible.

The fact that he was out of danger didn't lessen her guilt. Instead, Sienna was filled with heartache and contrition.

"Have you called the police?" Sienna was incensed. This was the first time she was attacked. Although she had escaped with some superficial wounds, Anthony had endured the brunt of the accident and was now lying unconscious.

Sienna wouldn't allow it. She wouldn't allow anyone around her to get hurt, anyone who wished her well, and for now, Anthony was on the list of her well-wishers.

"Yes, Miss. We did. They are investigating the accident," Frank replied honestly and stood up when the nurse entered.

"Miss Lawrence, you're awake. Let me fetch the doctor." The nurse ran out as quickly as she had entered and the two went silent.

"What about the man who saved me?"

"Miss, the man had some work to attend to. So, he left once we arrived. He left a note for you." Frank handed the folded note to her and Sienna took it skeptically.

'Nice handwriting,' she thought as she stared at the strong strokes. Although she wasn't a master at handwriting analysis, she knew a thing or two about it, and from the note in her hand, she deduced that the man wasn't sloppy. Instead, he had a strong persona.

'Rest well, Miss. I have some important matters to handle. I'll visit you when I'm free.'

There wasn't a name on the note. So, Sienna couldn't use her methods to find and thank him. She could only wait for him to visit her or for the police to find him. After all, he was a witness to the accident. The police were bound to look for him.

The doctor entered the ward a few minutes later, and Sienna cooperated with him in all the tests. She had to be perfectly healthy to face her enemies. She couldn't take any risks with her health.

"Miss Lawrence, you suffered a mild concussion. Although your reports are normal, I'd want you to remain in the hospital for the next two days. We want to ensure there are no lingering effects," the doctor stated, making her situation clear to her.

"I understand, Doctor. I'll do as you say," Sienna obliged. She had no reason not to.

"Good. The nurse will handle your medication and food for the next two days. If there is anything, you may call me or the nurse."

Sienna nodded, her eyes lowering to read his name on his badge. 'Doctor Moore.'

"Thank you, Doctor Moore."

"My pleasure."

The doctor, then, took his leave and Sienna closed his eyes.

"Miss, do you want to move back home?" Frank wasn't comfortable leaving Sienna in the hospital with strangers all around. She had been attacked once. What if she was attacked again?

Sienna's lips curved into a smile when he heard his words. His tone was filled with worry and she understood immediately what was running through his mind.

"No, Frank. Let's stay here."

"But, Miss."

"Keep an eye on the nurse or any stranger who enters the ward."

"Miss, do you suspect anyone?"

"Yes. I'm utterly vulnerable here. It's a good opportunity to kill me," Sienna mused, her eyes narrowing into slits.

"The doctor who just left is a famous neurologist. He wouldn't dare harm me. But we can't say the same about the nurse or other hospital staff."

"I understand, Miss. I will deploy more guards to protect you." Frank understood what was expected of him and he sent the message immediately.

"Good. Don't alert the enemy. Remain low and let's wait for them to show themselves." Sienna scoffed, her eyes glinting with ruthlessness. People dared to kill her. They were courting death.
