"Victor, are there any major health product or pharmaceutical companies in Hong Kong?" Hardy asked.
Victor considered the question. "It seems there aren't any significant health products companies here. Why do you ask? Are you looking to enter the health products industry?"
"Since the mainland will be using medicinal materials for repayment, it makes sense to put these materials to good use," Hardy explained. "In the U.S. and Europe, herbal medicines are used in very limited quantities, mostly within Chinese communities. The health products market, however, is much broader."
"Health products are considered dietary supplements, which are regulated less strictly than pharmaceuticals. They are classified as food products and face fewer regulatory hurdles," Hardy continued.
Victor nodded in understanding. "Are there any substantial pharmaceutical companies in Hong Kong that produce proprietary medicines?"
"Yes," Hardy replied. "I'm aware of Tongyitang Pharmaceutical, which moved from Guangzhou to Hong Kong. They operate a large factory and produce various proprietary medicines."
Victor recalled meeting Tongyitang's owner, Sha Tongyi, at a recent event. "I've met Sha Tongyi. He expressed interest in exporting his medicines to the U.S. through us. I'll get in touch with him right away."
Hardy glanced at his watch. "It's still early. Contact him now. I'd like to meet him today if possible."
Victor promptly reached out to Sha Tongyi's assistant to arrange a meeting at Hardy's manor.
Sha Tongyi, a middle-aged man with expertise in both traditional and Western medicine, had founded Tongyitang Pharmaceutical. Despite numerous challenges, including wartime disruptions and financial difficulties, he had managed to reopen his factory after the war. Nevertheless, the company remained financially strained.
Upon receiving the call from Victor's assistant, Sha Tongyi was both surprised and eager. He quickly drove to Taiping Mountain, where Hardy's manor was located.
Upon arrival, Sha Tongyi was greeted by security and escorted into the manor. Victor met him and led him to Hardy's study. Hardy greeted him warmly.
"Mr. Sha, I apologize for the short notice, but thank you for coming," Hardy said, extending his hand.
Sha Tongyi shook Hardy's hand, replying, "It's an honor to meet you, Mr. Hardy."
The two sat down, and Victor brought in tea for them both.
"Mr. Sha, I'm interested in learning more about your pharmaceutical company and its products," Hardy said.
Sha Tongyi, eager to impress, began detailing his company's offerings. "Tongyitang Pharmaceutical produces a range of proprietary medicines, including treatments for various conditions. Our modern factory is equipped with advanced production lines capable of making pills, capsules, tablets, granules, and syrups. Our products have been well-received locally and are known for their effectiveness."
Hardy listened attentively. "Would you consider selling your pharmaceutical company?"
Sha Tongyi was surprised. "Are you interested in buying my company?"
Hardy smiled. "I am considering entering the health products industry and am very interested in your company. I'd like to discuss the possibility of acquiring it and integrating it into the Hardy Group."
