Chapter 106: Chapter 106: Always Carrying an Old Grandpa

The film "Murder Case" has been in theaters for a week, grossing 28 million at the box office, ranking third among its peers. As an art film, this result is quite decent.

With the movie's success, Richard's fame also increased, reaching C-level. He also received $150,000 for his role in "The Talented Mr. Ripley," comparable to what he would earn from a boxing match.

"Richard, this is Mr. Hall Herbers. From now on, Hall will be responsible for your film and television affairs. He is more professional in this field than I am," Anthony introduced a middle-aged man, around 50-60 years old, with thinning hair, under 1.7 meters tall, wearing a gray short-sleeve shirt and tortoiseshell glasses, looking scholarly like a professor.

"Mr. Herbers, nice to meet you. I'll be counting on you," Richard said, extending his hand for a shake.

"Richard, just call me Old Hall. We'll be working together for a long time, so no need to be too formal," Old Hall replied with a friendly smile.

Old Hall was very talkative and approachable, almost grandfatherly. Richard found it amusing, thinking it was like having a grandpa by his side.

After meeting Old Hall, Anthony drove off to return to his busy work at the newly opened company, where he was hiring, networking, and building resources.

Richard drove, taking Old Hall along for a casting call for "Kiss and Make Up," also known as "A Kiss to Seal the Deal," produced by Flower Films.

"Richard, we'll be working together from now on. Is there anything you want to ask me?" Old Hall asked, taking out a notebook.

Richard thought for a moment. "Old Hall, how's your health?"

"Oh, I'm only 54 and very fit. I can climb stairs faster than Anthony. You don't need to worry about that," Old Hall said, flexing his arm to show off his muscles.

"Old Hall, Anthony mentioned you used to manage Sean Connery?"

"Yes, I worked as a real estate agent before switching to CAA at 32, starting as an assistant and eventually becoming an executive agent. I managed Mr. Connery for four years before leaving CAA."

"Why did you leave? Mr. Connery, although older, is still one of the most famous actors," Richard inquired.

"Indeed, Mr. Connery is very popular, but as I aged, I faced issues like health and communication. Young agents use computers while I'm still used to notebooks. We can't keep up with the times, and clients don't want to work with an old man," Old Hall explained.

"That's unfortunate. I heard that during the filming of 'The Challenge,' there were rumors about Mr. Connery and Ms. Basinger. Were you there at the time?" Richard asked curiously.

"Richard, are you testing my professionalism? The first rule of being an agent is client confidentiality. I've been in this industry for over twenty years and would never make such a mistake," Old Hall laughed.

Richard smiled lightly. "I apologize for the oversight. I don't have any more questions for now."

"Alright, may I ask you a few questions?" Old Hall asked.

"Go ahead," Richard replied, slowing down the car.

"First question: Richard, why do you want to be an actor?"

"That's a broad question. Wealth, beauty, dreams, and interest all play a part. How should I answer?" Richard laughed.

"Do you want to be a commercial superstar or a successful artist?" Old Hall continued.

"Hmm," Richard thought for a moment. "Although I want to be an artist, I know my energy is limited. Becoming a commercial superstar is more realistic."

Old Hall jotted down some notes. "Second question: What's your view on the unspoken rules of the industry? The entertainment industry is flourishing but lacks specific laws, leading to widespread unspoken rules. What's your take?"

"Unspoken rules are just another form of transaction. As long as it doesn't involve my body, soul, or emotions, other rules are negotiable," Richard replied.

"Got it. Third question," Old Hall smiled.

The two continued their Q&A session for over twenty minutes until they arrived at Flower Films on Hollywood Boulevard for Richard's audition for the role of Sam Coulson, a British literature teacher, in "A Kiss to Seal the Deal."

Unlike auditions for new actors, established actors don't need to read lines, undress, or perform on the spot. Assessing an actor's suitability is more reliable through their past works.

In "Murder Case," Richard's performance as a con artist painter was impressive, earning recognition in the industry, which led to many production companies offering him roles.

At the audition, Richard met with director Raja Gosnell, writer Abby Kohn, and the slightly plump Drew Barrymore. Drew looked more robust than in her films but still had a charming look with her red hair and fair skin.

Richard chatted with the director and writer for over ten minutes, discussing literary topics relevant to his role as a teacher. Although he hadn't attended college, Richard had read more books than his peers and could quote famous authors extensively, impressing the two.

During their conversation, Drew watched silently, propping her face on her hands, making Richard a bit uneasy.

"Do you have any opinions, Drew?" Abby Kohn asked.

Drew smiled, revealing a dimple. "Mr. Brad, how was your relationship with Gwyneth during the filming of 'Murder Case'?"

Richard was unsure of her intention. Rumor had it that Drew and Gwyneth, both goddaughters of Spielberg, didn't get along. Her question seemed tricky.

"During the shoot, Ms. Paltrow and I got along well. As a newcomer, I appreciated her guidance," Richard answered truthfully.

"Oh? I watched your interview on the movie channel. Gwyneth mentioned you painted a nude portrait of a female murderer on the rooftop. Your relationship doesn't seem as harmonious as you say," Drew laughed.

"Ms. Barrymore, is this relevant to the audition? It's a personal matter, and I can't discuss it," Richard replied.

"Understood. I'm friends with Gwyneth, so I was curious. I hope you don't mind," Drew smiled.

"Understandable," Richard said.

Moments later, Richard left Flower Films.

"Richard, was there a problem with the audition?" Old Hall asked, noting Richard's expression.

"Yes, initially, the conversation with the director and writer went well. But Ms. Barrymore seemed to focus on personal questions, which I didn't want to answer. So, the chances of success are low," Richard explained.

"In that case, I think you have a better chance," Old Hall said, winking.

"Why?" Richard asked, intrigued.

"When a woman is interested in a man's private life, it often indicates something significant. Do you understand?" Old Hall chuckled.

"You mean she might want to use unspoken rules on me?" Richard shook his head. Drew, now 24, had a complicated past but had become a prominent star again with successful films.

"Richard, don't overthink. The film needs a handsome, elegant leading man, and you fit the bill. That's enough. The choice is yours," Old Hall reassured.

"You're right," Richard said, starting the car.

The next day, Old Hall received a call from the production company. Richard had passed the audition and secured the role of Sam Coulson in "A Kiss to Seal the Deal."

"Congratulations, Richard. With 'The Talented Mr. Ripley' and 'A Kiss to Seal the Deal,' your C-list status is solid. Next, you can aim for B-list," Anthony said, laughing.

Richard shook his head. "Both movies will be filmed this year. Make sure to schedule everything properly. Don't forget I have two boxing matches."

"Got it. Don't worry," Anthony said.

Later, Richard received a call from Charlize Theron. "Hey, Richard, I have great news. I got the lead role in 'The Cider House Rules'!"

"Really? That quickly?"

This matter only happened two or three days ago, and Norman got it done so fast.

"Yes, I'm surprised too. Thank you, and thank your friend as well. Do you have time? I'd like to treat you both to a drink!"

"Sure, we should thank him. Just a heads-up, that guy is quite the ladies' man, so be careful."

Richard said.

"Really? Does he have a girlfriend? He seems like a great catch. Maybe I should try dating him. What do you think?"

"..."

"Hey, why aren't you saying anything?"

Mrs. Theron called out.

"Sally? Sally? What did you say? I was in the elevator, and the signal was bad. Can you repeat that?"

Richard shouted.

"Fine, listen carefully. I said, Richard Brad, you are such a jerk!!"

Mrs. Theron yelled.

"Okay, I got it."

Richard laughed. You can't blame me; blame your dangerous thoughts. Dating Norman? That's like jumping into a pit of fire. As a friend, I can't allow that.

In the evening, at a bar on Santa Monica Beach, he met up with Norman, Paul, Anthony, and Mrs. Theron for drinks and chatting. Mrs. Theron was outgoing, beautiful, and spirited, quickly hitting it off with the group.

"Sally, are you and Richard really just friends? Nothing more?"

Norman asked, holding his drink and staring at Sally with a smile.

"Yes, we're just friends, pure friendship."

Mrs. Theron said, draping an arm over Richard's shoulder, her smile radiant.

"How about I pursue you then?"

Norman asked, winking.

"Go ahead and try. You seem like a good catch. Maybe you'll succeed."

Mrs. Theron smiled.

"Really?"

"Norman, Sally already said it. What are you hesitating for? If you're a man, go for it."

Paul encouraged.

"Yes, Norman, go for it. If you win her over, someone might get heartbroken."

Anthony laughed.

"Wait, I need to think about it."

Norman stroked his chin, looked at Richard, then at Sally, and finally shook his head. "Forget it, I don't want to put a green hat on Richard."

"Haha, Norman, you're mistaken. Look at Richard and Sally's relationship. If you win Sally, you might be putting a green hat on him."

Paul laughed so hard he spilled his drink.

"Quite possible!"

Anthony laughed.

"Hey, Richard, what do you think?"

Norman laughed.

"Shut up, let's drink!"

Richard raised his glass.

"Look, Richard's mad. I think if we keep talking, someone might get punched. Alright, let's drink!"

Norman raised his glass and laughed.

"Cheers!"

The next day, Richard attended another audition, this time for the role of a lieutenant in "The Cider House Rules." The character is a cuckolded man with a small role, and the audition went smoothly.

In the afternoon, he attended Paul's boxing match at the Staples Center.

This round of heavyweight semifinals was full of top-notch fighters like David Tua, John Ruiz, and Hasim Rahman, all at championship level.

This time, Paul faced "The Atomic Bull" Oliver McCall.

McCall had been a sparring partner for champions like Tyson and Bruno and had defeated Lewis in a public match.

McCall's special skill was his exceptional ability to take punches; he'd never been knocked down in a match, a record unmatched.

Paul fought him for six rounds, getting knocked down four times, looking sluggish, and the referee stopped the match.

Paul lost and missed the chance to challenge for the championship.

"Paul, don't be too disheartened. Those guys are older than you. You can try again next year."

Norman comforted.

"Yes, Paul, your performance this time was already impressive."

Richard patted his shoulder. For a newcomer to reach the heavyweight semifinals was quite an achievement.

"But I still lost. That guy was too tough."

Paul sighed, feeling down.

Richard shook his head. This guy was always like this, ballooning with pride when he won and deflating like a punctured tire when he lost.

"Paul, the heavyweight boxing scene is full of talent. Winning the championship belt is no easy feat. Losing matches is unavoidable. You need to learn to accept that."

Richard said.

"Yes, Paul. Or you could quit boxing and join me. I'll make sure you drink the best wine, date the hottest women, and start with a monthly salary of fifty thousand. How about it?"

Norman said, slinging an arm around his shoulder with a grin.

Paul glanced at him, "You want me to be your sidekick?"

"Not a sidekick, a partner!" Norman gestured emphatically.

"Is there a difference?"

Paul rolled his eyes and waved a fist, "I've decided. From now on, I'm going to train hard. Until I win the championship belt, I won't mess around with you guys. I'm going back to New York to train!"

"Alright, let's go together!"

With his work here done, Richard also flew back to New York the next day, two days ahead of schedule.
