Chapter 34: Stepping Up

Marcus arrived at the training ground before dawn, the first morning light just beginning to creep over the horizon. He felt an electric anticipation coursing through him as he jogged onto the pitch, headphones on, and ball at his feet. The previous day's conversation with Mia had left him feeling both reflective and motivated. He wanted to honor his father's legacy while forging his path, and today felt like another step toward that goal.

He practiced relentlessly, refining his moves and perfecting his technique. The pitch was his sanctuary, where he could focus entirely on his game. As the sky brightened, he noticed the rest of the team arriving, one by one, with Harvey Elliott among the first.

"Morning, early bird," Harvey called out, joining Marcus on the pitch.

"Morning. Just trying to stay ahead," Marcus replied with a grin.

Coach Anderson soon called the team together, a serious look on his face. "Alright, everyone, gather up," he began. "I've got some important news. Marcus, Harvey, step forward."

The two young players exchanged a glance and stepped forward, feeling the eyes of their teammates on them.

"Starting today, you two will be training with the first team," Anderson announced. "You've both shown exceptional progress, and it's time for you to step up and experience the next level. You'll continue playing in the U21 matches, but I want you to get a taste of what it takes to compete in the Premier League."

Marcus and Harvey felt a rush of excitement and nervousness. This was the opportunity they had been working toward, but they knew it wouldn't be easy.

The first team training ground felt different. The atmosphere was more intense, the pace faster, and the expectations higher. As Marcus and Harvey joined the first team, they could feel the scrutiny of seasoned players on them. Some of the senior players from Fulham's 2018/19 squad, like Aleksandar Mitrović, Tom Cairney, and Jean Michaël Seri, watched them with a mixture of curiosity and amusement.

"Fresh meat," someone muttered, and there were a few chuckles. Marcus felt a surge of determination. He was here to prove himself, not to be intimidated.

The first training session was grueling. The pace was relentless, and the physicality was on another level. Marcus found himself struggling to keep up, his muscles burning and lungs heaving. Harvey seemed to fare slightly better, his speed and agility giving him an edge, but even he was pushed to his limits.

During a drill, Mitrović sidled up to Marcus, a friendly but challenging look in his eyes. "Keep up, kid. The Premier League is no joke."

Marcus nodded, wiping sweat from his brow. "I'll do my best."

The senior players weren't unkind, but they made it clear that Marcus and Harvey would have to earn their place. The banter was a mix of encouragement and tough love, pushing the young players to their limits.

As the session progressed, Marcus began to adjust, his body adapting to the increased demands. He made a few good plays, earning nods of approval from some of the first-team players. Still, he knew he had a long way to go.

After training, Marcus collapsed on the grass, exhausted but exhilarated. Harvey dropped down beside him, equally spent.

"That was intense," Harvey said, panting.

"Yeah, but we survived," Marcus replied, a hint of a smile on his face.

Slaviša Jokanović approached them, a satisfied look on his face. "Good work, both of you. It's not easy stepping up to this level, but you're holding your own. Keep pushing, and you'll get there. At this rate, you should make your pro debut in no time."

Marcus nodded, feeling a renewed sense of purpose. This was just the beginning. The road ahead was long and filled with challenges, but he was ready to tackle them head-on.

As he walked home, his body aching from the rigorous session, Marcus couldn't help but think about his father. Ethan had always told him that greatness required sacrifice and perseverance. Today had been a testament to that lesson.

When he got home, he dropped onto his bed, pulling out his phone to message Mia.

Marcus: I just finished my first training session with the first team. It was brutal, but I'm hanging in there.

Mia: That's amazing, Marcus! I knew you'd do great. How did it feel?

Marcus: Intense. The pace is so much faster. Some of the guys called us "fresh meat." But I'm not giving up.

Mia: You're not fresh meat. You're a rising star. Just keep doing what you're doing. I'm so proud of you.

Marcus smiled, her words giving him strength. He lay back, staring at the ceiling, his mind already thinking about the next day's training. He was determined to prove himself, to show that he belonged at this level.
