The system notifications kept popping up.
And just like that, Chen Ye effortlessly became the second-in-command of the Axe Gang!
In reality, if Chen Ye wanted to complete the task more effectively and achieve a higher rating, it would have been better to form his own gang. With his current strength, establishing a gang in this world would have been incredibly easy—he could have simply steamrolled his way to the top.
In just a month, he could have dominated the entire SH City, and there was a good chance he would have earned another SSS-level godlike rating!
However, Chen Ye wasn't here for the mission rewards this time.
If he were aiming for better rewards, he would have chosen to tackle "Sadako" next door instead. He knew the plot and understood the reasons behind Sadako's actions, so taking her down wouldn't have been much of a challenge.
The reason he didn't go after Sadako and instead chose the world of "Kung Fu" was that his goal this time wasn't about the mission rewards…
As the newly appointed second-in-command of the Axe Gang, Chen Ye's first order of business was to create a sketch of a beggar. He then had an artist produce numerous copies.
Since there were no photocopiers in this era, they had to be hand-drawn.
Next, Chen Ye instructed every member of the Axe Gang to carry a copy of the sketch and search the city for the beggar depicted.
He even went so far as to offer a hefty bounty!
Anyone who could find the beggar in the sketch would receive a reward of ten thousand silver dollars!
As for where the money would come from? The mighty Shura could certainly come up with ten thousand silver dollars…
…
That night, in a dimly lit room:
"Brother Sum, look, this is the person the second-in-command is searching for!"
The snaggle-toothed advisor handed the sketch to Brother Sum, the leader of the Axe Gang.
Brother Sum glanced at the sketch and paused, "A beggar?"
"Brother Sum, you've got sharp eyes! I also think it's a beggar," the advisor flattered.
The person in the sketch looked so filthy that even a fool could tell it was a beggar...
"Why would the second-in-command be looking for a beggar?" Brother Sum wondered aloud.
"Maybe it's a long-lost relative or something," the advisor speculated.
Brother Sum thought for a moment and realized that could be the case. Otherwise, why would Shura have mobilized the entire Axe Gang to search for someone as soon as he became second-in-command? He even suspected that Shura had joined the gang solely to find this person…
After all, the Axe Gang was the largest gang in SH City, with territories spanning the entire city and a huge number of members!
"Did you find out anything about the second-in-command's background?" Brother Sum asked.
"We sent people to investigate, but they couldn't find much. It seems like he's from out of town," the advisor reported.
Brother Sum frowned upon hearing this.
"Also, keep an eye on those new captains who recently joined the gang," he added.
The "captains" he mentioned were actually reincarnators.
"Understood, Brother Sum. I've already arranged for someone to look into them," the advisor replied.
Brother Sum nodded, then added, "Have you made any progress in finding the experts I asked for?"
"Yes! I was just about to report that," the advisor grinned. "I've heard of something called the Assassins' Ranking in the martial world. All the people on that list are top-notch fighters. The one ranked first is the Ultimate Killing King, The Beast. No one knows his whereabouts, but we've sent people to find him. The ones ranked second are the Crippled Duo, and we've already made contact with them. They should be here in a few days."
"Excellent!" Brother Sum's face twisted into a menacing smile. "Hire a few more skilled assassins. Tell them whoever can take out the second-in-command will be richly rewarded!"
Chen Ye's display of power that day had terrified Brother Sum. He couldn't sleep well until this threat was eliminated.
"Don't worry, Brother Sum. I'll make sure to hire the best of the best!" the advisor assured him.
"And one more thing," Brother Sum warned. "Make sure the second-in-command doesn't find out that we're behind this."
"Understood!!"
Satisfied, Brother Sum relaxed into the sofa and casually asked, "How's the third-in-command doing?"
The third-in-command was the previous second-in-command, who had been demoted after being overthrown by Chen Ye.
The advisor, being a smart man, knew Brother Sum was asking if the third-in-command harbored any resentment, so he replied, "He's doing well. He's been busy expanding our territory."
Brother Sum nodded in satisfaction and then asked, "How much of SH City is under our control now?"
After thinking for a moment, the advisor smiled and said, "Almost all of it, except for a few small areas."
Brother Sum, who was ambitious, immediately declared, "We can't let those small areas slip through our fingers. I want only one voice in all of SH City, and that's the Axe Gang!"
"Understood, Brother Sum!"
…
Time flew by, and ten days passed in the blink of an eye.
During these ten days, Chen Ye spent a lot of time mobilizing the Axe Gang to search every corner of SH City, but they still couldn't find the mysterious beggar.
Every day, Chen Ye would meet with a dozen or so beggars, but none of them were the one he was looking for.
Some people, trying to be clever, heard about the bounty and disguised themselves to look like the sketch, hoping to trick Chen Ye and claim the reward.
But Chen Ye wasn't one to be fooled.
He used his psychic powers to snap the necks of several imposters!
After killing a few batches, no one dared to try their luck anymore.
Still, Chen Ye was disappointed that he hadn't found the beggar.
With only 20 days left before the mission deadline, Chen Ye decided not to waste any more time searching. Instead, he began to focus on his second target: Sing!
Just as he was about to give orders to have Sing brought to him, one of his subordinates rushed in to report.
"Second-in-command!"
"What is it?"
"Someone claims to have seen the beggar you're looking for…"
"Oh?" Chen Ye raised an eyebrow, though his expression remained calm. "Where did they see him?"
He had heard similar reports so often that he no longer got his hopes up.
"They say he was seen in a beggars' nest in the northern part of the city!" the subordinate replied.
"Who saw him?" Chen Ye asked again.
"It was an old woman. We've brought her here, and she's waiting outside."
Chen Ye nodded. "Have her lead the way. I'll go take a look."
Whether it was true or not, he had to check it out.
What if it really was the mysterious beggar?
