Shen You stood in the café, glancing around.
"It doesn't look any different. Are you sure we're in a dream?"
"Of course. Who do you think I am? I'm 'that wizard.' When have my spells ever gone wrong?" The old wizard stood tall, puffing his chest and blowing at his beard.
Come to think of it, the customers who had been asleep earlier were gone, not a single one remained. Instead, a girl's scream came from the back room.
"Kara?"
Shen You turned around and pushed open the door. He saw the girl huddled pitifully in a corner, squeezed into a dead end. Surrounding her were menacing villains with sinister smiles, glaring at Kara with cruel eyes. Each of them had green, wrinkled bodies, red eyes, and grinning mouths, looking like...
Bell peppers?
"...?"
Seeing these creatures with large heads, short limbs, and bell pepper-like bodies, Shen You was puzzled.
Had the bell peppers come to life?
Kara was huddled in the corner, wearing the white dress she had come in with, hugging her knees and crying pitifully. "Please... don't come any closer..."
This strange nightmare left Shen You at a loss. He couldn't tell if it was the nightmare's influence or if she really hated bell peppers that much.
The old wizard stepped forward and patted Shen You on the shoulder. "Let's go. She's trapped in her own nightmare; there's nothing we can do for her. We need to find the culprit and end this."
Shen You nodded and followed him outside.
The scene outside the café in the dream world was utter chaos.
Gotham was in total disarray. Cars were crashing through the streets, disgusting creatures with large eyes and numerous tentacles climbed the buildings.
Old Wang from next door was having a pleasant conversation with a neighbor's wife when the husband suddenly appeared; a gang of hooligans armed with baseball bats was trying to loot, only to be stopped by a large bat swooping down and swiftly beating them senseless.
What a Gotham-style nightmare.
"Master of this realm, ruler of nightmares, in the name of Wizard Shazam, show yourself!" The old wizard raised his arms high, his robes billowing in the wind.
Shen You silently added a sound effect of "By the power vested in me" in his mind, feeling it fit perfectly.
Suddenly, a surge of dark energy erupted. In the middle of the city street, it surged like black lava, converging into a massive humanoid figure. A black hood covered a skeletal face with no flesh, its deep-set eye sockets glowing red, and its entire body shrouded in a large cloak, towering among the concrete jungle.
"Who dares to defy me in the dream world—my domain!? Your destiny!?" the skeletal face bellowed menacingly.
At first, Shen You thought this skeleton looked familiar, like Marvel's Taskmaster. But when it mentioned "destiny," Shen You recognized it as Doctor Destiny, originally John Dee, an inmate of Arkham Asylum with the ability to control dreams. He once nearly wiped out the Justice League in their dreams.
As the giant figure appeared, all the people in the city froze.
Suddenly, he became the sole focus. All eyes were irresistibly drawn to him, fixated on the towering figure, as if magnetically attracted.
Then came the fear.
Yes, fear. That was the only thing everyone could feel from the figure. It was as if deep, chilling breaths whispered in everyone's ears, unparalleled terror invading their souls. Limbs went cold, bodies felt submerged in icy water, and the demonic whispers cut through like a bitter wind, making the air impossibly thin, seeping into their bodies, breaking even the strongest wills.
"That's right, fear! Then despair!" Doctor Destiny clenched his fists, as if endless darkness was flowing into his body from all directions.
"The more you fear, the stronger I become! This is my world, and I am its only god!"
A whirlwind arose out of nowhere. The old wizard looked up at the giant figure, his expression gravely serious. "He's stronger than I expected. With my current magic, he's difficult to handle. Step back; I need to use forbidden magic. Maybe I can—"
Before he could finish, a burst of dazzling light exploded behind him. Holy white light bloomed like countless lotus flowers, and a rapidly growing fist emerged from the light, striking Doctor Destiny's face with a thunderous blow.
At that moment, Doctor Destiny was reveling in his expanding power, laughing maniacally. The punch hit him mid-laugh, dislocating his jaw with a "crack." His hundred-meter-tall body fell, crushing an entire row of buildings along the street, raising clouds of dust.
The old wizard opened his mouth, the half-completed forbidden spell halted, and he swallowed his unfinished words.
Then he said, "...Or that could work too."
Standing just as tall, towering among the buildings, was a slender red-and-silver giant with faint golden lights in his eyes.
Shen You's normal height was about fifty meters. Growing taller wasn't a problem, but it would increase energy consumption. Generally, it wasn't cost-effective.
But in the dream world, there weren't such strict limitations.
As the Ultraman appeared and the light burst forth, even the dark clouds in the sky seemed to disperse. The overwhelming and oppressive fear instantly lightened, as if a heavy stone was lifted from everyone's hearts.
All the city's residents involuntarily looked up, gazing in shock at the newly appeared giant.
The old wizard squinted his eyes.
He now realized that Shen You wasn't exaggerating when he said he understood the rules of dreams.
Seeing the red-and-silver giant in the dream world, even the old wizard felt like he was staring at a blazing sun.
"So that's how it is. By dispersing his body elements and reconstructing a form adapted to the dream world's rules, he can wield power not inferior to his real-world strength."
Although the experienced wizard quickly understood the principle behind the Ultraman's dream entry, he had never heard of such a technique. He couldn't help but stroke his beard with a more intrigued expression.
So this was called Ultraman?
What a formidable race.
Even the old wizard was surprised, so it was no wonder Doctor Destiny was utterly bewildered.
Punched flat on his back, feeling the searing pain spreading through his body, Doctor Destiny's skull was filled with confusion.
Had he just been punched?
In his own nightmare?
No, wasn't he supposed to be invincible in the dream world?
Did he have a faulty cheat?
