Chapter 11: Chaos

Lane took a couple of steps but then stopped.

She glanced at the maids behind Born, her eyes showing a flicker of astonishment before returning to normal.

"Wow, Lane's boyfriend!"

The student immediately started teasing.

Lane lightly patted the student again but didn't deny it.

"Did you come to find me?"

"Oh no, I'm also looking for a school bus."

As soon as he said this, the maids behind Born all made facepalm gestures.

"Actually, Born's target was clear, it was the elementary school."

"Right, the elementary school has the school bus. I heard it cost millions to purchase, and in terms of performance and..."

Born was cut off mid-sentence as Pearl stepped forward and gave him a light tap, interrupting him.

Lane seemed to think for a moment, then turned and started walking away.

"Follow me, it's not safe here."

"No, wait, with that cat killed, it should be safe now."

Lane continued talking to herself as she walked away.

Born followed with the maids, scratching his head. He didn't think he said anything wrong.

So why were the maids giving him such looks of disdain?

He suspected that the system's 100% loyalty feature might be malfunctioning!

...

On the fifth floor, in a large classroom.

A 6'3" muscular man was showing off his muscles in front of the teachers.

The teachers were speechless.

This was the school's gym teacher. He kept saying he'd find a way out, but they had been trapped here for days.

The so-called rescue had not come.

A sense of despair was gradually spreading.

"Lane has been out for so long, could something have happened to her?"

"I've said it before, those brats in Lane's class are all troublemakers. Something was bound to happen."

"The world's gone crazy. Just taking care of yourself is hard enough. These kids..."

At that moment, the classroom door was pushed open.

Lane walked in, holding a child, and looked at the teacher who had spoken.

"They are not a burden. Besides, it's safe here now."

Lane knew what the teacher was implying. Eighty or ninety kids were essentially useless.

Their parents might not even be alive anymore.

As teachers, they were struggling to take care of themselves while having to look after dozens of kids. If that wasn't a burden, what was?

The gym teacher quickly came over, looking incredulous. "How is that possible? That cat was incredibly strong. Did it just run away?"

At that moment, Born and his maid legion walked in.

A middle-aged teacher stood up, clearly displeased. "Lane, I told you this place is already crowded enough. Now you're bringing more people in to take up resources!"

Lane frowned, wanting to say something, but Born interrupted.

Born stepped forward and said, "We're only here for the school bus. Once we get the keys, we'll leave."

He glanced around and only saw one girl with an attribute worth noting.

She had a doctor attribute, suitable for recruitment.

As for the others, Born would address them as aunties.

There were attributes like cook and teacher, which weren't suitable.

"Additionally, anyone who wants to come with us can. We'll be leaving in three hours."

Born then pulled Lane aside, indicating that he wanted to talk privately.

The teachers continued murmuring among themselves, their eyes fixed on Born.

Born led Lane to a corner.

"Actually, I came to find you. After all, we're good friends. But you know how the world has changed?"

Born wanted to recruit Lane.

Not to control her, but to protect her.

As a member of his legion, she could be cared for by the system, receiving treatment and enhancements using points, which would give her the power to protect herself.

As for the 100% loyalty aspect,

Born believed that even without the system, Lane would never betray him.

Their four years of friendship had built a deep mutual trust and understanding.

"However, I need to place a mark on you, and you mustn't resist."

Born felt a bit anxious saying this.

"I agree, if you managed to kill that big cat, you must have changed."

"But I have a condition."

Lane turned her head towards the group of children.

Born was silent.

He knew what Lane's condition was, but he didn't want to take these troublesome kids with him.

"That's alright, I'll take care of myself," Lane said with a smile.

Then she turned and walked away.

Born stood there, sighing in frustration.

He hadn't anticipated this situation.

At that moment, Lane returned to the crowd, and a few teachers immediately surrounded her.

"Lane, it's not about what the headteacher said, but you see those people with weapons? They definitely have the strength, right?"

The headteacher smiled kindly and took Lane's hand.

"Our thought is to leave the children here, let them hide, and you talk to your acquaintance about protecting us while we go to a safer place."

"Then we can find the military to come back and rescue these kids."

"There's food stored here, so the kids will be fine."

Lane was stunned and looked around.

It was clear that everyone shared this idea.

Except for the gym teacher, who was grumbling that he could protect everyone too.

Seeing Lane's hesitation, the teachers started persuading her immediately.

The headteacher, speaking earnestly, said, "Lane, you're still young and need to listen to us. If you can't convince him, let me talk to him."

The headteacher turned and looked at Born.

But he saw the school nurse being taken aside by Born's people, gathered around and talking about something.

Soon, the nurse nodded in agreement.

The headteacher ignored this and continued persuading Lane.

At that moment, gunshots rang out.

The headteacher became extremely excited and pushed Lane aside.

"The army is here to rescue us! Lane, you didn't want to ask your friend for help, but you see, we didn't need him after all."

Several teachers immediately rushed to the corridor and opened the windows, shouting down below.

Born felt a bad premonition.

Not long after, a horrifying scream echoed.

"Why are there zombies? Ahhh!"

Chaos erupted instantly.

The teachers were in a frenzy, and the children ran around the corridor in panic.

Pearl and the others raised their automatic crossbows but hesitated to shoot.

Within minutes, the corridor was filled with the heavy scent of blood.

"Damn it, brainless idiots!"

"Prioritize saving the children. If any of them are injured, leave them!"

Born's primary reason for saving the children was for Lane.

He rushed into the corridor, which was already in utter chaos, with people running downstairs.

But a few zombies had already made their way up the stairs.

Had the door below been breached?
