Chapter 1: Prologue: The Night of Shadows

Seraphina 'Seraph' Valen awoke to the sound of thunder, the room illuminated by flashes of lightning. The storm outside roared with a ferocity that rattled the windows of their grand estate. She rubbed her eyes and sat up, the fear creeping into her heart. She had always been wary of storms, their unpredictability making her uneasy. But this storm felt different, more sinister.

"Mom?" she called out, her voice trembling slightly. There was no response, only the sound of rain pounding against the windows and the distant rumble of thunder.

Seraph swung her legs out of bed, her bare feet touching the cold floor. She wrapped her robe tightly around her and made her way to the door. The hallway outside was dimly lit, the shadows dancing in the flickering candlelight. She took a deep breath and started walking, her steps cautious and measured.

As she walked through the halls, the shadows seemed to move, twisting and turning in the corners of her vision. The further she went, the louder the storm seemed to grow, the thunder now echoing through the entire house. She called out again, "Mom? Dad?" but there was still no answer.

She turned a corner and froze. Standing in the middle of the hallway was a creature, unlike anything she had ever seen. Its body was twisted and grotesque, with sharp, jagged teeth and eyes that glowed with a malevolent light. It snarled at her, its hunger evident.

Before Seraph could react, the monster lunged at her. She screamed, throwing her arms up in a futile attempt to protect herself. But just as the creature was about to reach her, a blast of light exploded in front of her, knocking the monster back.

Seraph's mother, Lady Elara Valen, stepped forward, her eyes blazing with anger and determination. "Get away from my daughter!" she shouted, her voice echoing through the hall. She raised her hand, chanting an incantation, and a bolt of energy shot from her palm, striking the monster and causing it to writhe in pain.

The creature let out a final, blood-curdling scream before disintegrating into ashes. Elara rushed to Seraph's side, her face softening with concern. "Are you okay, my love?" she asked, her hands gently cupping Seraph's face.

Seraph nodded, tears streaming down her cheeks. "Mom, what's happening?"

Elara's expression grew grave. "We need to get to the court of the house. Your father needs our help." She took Seraph's hand, and together they hurried through the halls, the storm still raging outside.

They burst into the court to find Lord Thalor Valen locked in combat with another monstrous creature. This one was larger and more menacing, its claws slashing through the air with deadly precision. Thalor was holding his own, but it was clear he was struggling.

"Thalor!" Elara called out, drawing his attention. He glanced at her, a mixture of relief and determination in his eyes.

"Elara, get Seraph to safety!" he shouted, but it was too late. The creature seized the momentary distraction and delivered a brutal blow, sending Thalor crashing to the ground.

"No!" Elara screamed, rushing to her husband's side. She turned to Seraph, her eyes filled with tears. "Hide, Seraph. Stay hidden, no matter what happens."

Seraph hesitated, her heart breaking as she watched her parents in their desperate battle. But she did as she was told, ducking behind a nearby pillar.

Elara stood tall, her hands glowing with magical energy. She faced the creature, her expression fierce. "You will not harm my family," she declared, launching herself at the monster.

The battle was fierce and unrelenting. Elara fought with everything she had, but the creature was relentless. Finally, in a desperate move, she unleashed a powerful spell that engulfed both her and the monster in a blinding light.

When the light faded, the creature was gone, but so was Elara. Seraph crawled out from her hiding place, her eyes wide with shock and grief. She ran to her father, who lay motionless on the ground.

"Dad, please," she sobbed, shaking him gently. But there was no response. Both of her parents were gone, sacrificed to save her.

Seraph's world had been shattered. She was alone, traumatized by the events of the night. She didn't yet bear the physical marks of her heritage, but the emotional scars were deep. The storm outside began to calm, but the storm within Seraph was just beginning.
