Chapter 12: New Techniques

After leaving the Hokage's building, Yami headed toward the mountain where Konoha's library archive was situated. As he entered the general vicinity, multiple green-vested shinobi came into view, standing guard around the perimeter.

Even without using soul perception, Yami could feel multiple eyes on him but couldn't detect where they were coming from. 'Hmm, it would be hard to sneak in here with my stealth,' he thought. He didn't know if there were special seals that could detect him in his stealth mode, and he wasn't willing to risk finding out about a few common techniques.

'Being a sensor ninja would have been great,' he thought. He wished he had that ability. Sadly, being a sensor-nin was prestigious and a matter of luck. It was rarely passed down through bloodlines and often appeared randomly.

Although his soul perception ability could work similarly, it was currently limited to a twenty-meter radius, which wasn't as effective for detecting ambushes compared to sensor ninjas and the Byakugan. If he had been a natural sensor ninja, he would probably have been valued and received special treatment.

'The only way I'm getting sensory abilities is if I learn how to harness natural energy,' Yami huffed in annoyance.

As he approached the building built into the side of the mountain, multiple eyes drifted to him. Despite wearing Genin attire, no one came to stop him.

As the door closed behind him, he couldn't help but stop to take in the scene in front of him. The inside of the building was absolutely huge. All around him, he could see massive bookcases as far as the eye could see. The only place without bookshelves, from what he could tell, was the path laid out to the door, leading to many tables that could probably seat a good fifty people and a desk behind it.

Since this was his first time here, he didn't know where anything was. So, he made his way to the front desk, where an older girl wearing a white lab coat and swirly glasses hiding her eyes sat.

"Hello, can I help you?" she asked when he stopped in front of the desk.

Yami didn't say any nonsense and directly showed her the Hokage's letter.

Despite the initial surprise, the librarian helped him pick everything he needed after checking the letter's authenticity.

Though he had a letter from the Hokage, it only mentioned that he would get the same treatment as a Chunin, so he was only allowed to pick five scrolls from the library.

While inwardly disappointed, Yami took his time to carefully choose his needs while similarly asking the librarian for recommendations.

Only after an hour did Yami leave the library, satisfied with his gains. He couldn't wait to learn these techniques, so he immediately rushed toward the training ground.

But on the way, he stopped when he caught sight of a ninja tools store. Different kinds of swords and kunai were displayed in the windows.

"…Should I?" Yami pondered to himself. Due to his 'companions' unfortunate incidents, he was fine on kunai, shuriken, ninja wire, and such for now, but this particular shop seemed to sell body weights for training.

If it had before, Yami wouldn't consider wearing weights with his weak physique, but recently he found that the orb seemed to have modified his body and increased his talent. As if it removed his limiter. If he trained with weights, the results would be significant.

He headed into the shop, ignoring the various tools, and went over to the counter where a huge muscular bulky older man with a short fuzzy beard stood.

"Huh, something you need, boy?" the man asked, raising an eyebrow after noticing him.

"I'm looking for body weights to help me train," Yami replied.

"Yeah, we've got 'em," the man shrugged. "What kind of weight are you looking for? Do you have any preference?"

"Hmm." Yami took a moment to think. Both Might Guy and Rock Lee used weights on their legs, but he didn't want to increase his running speed. He wanted to strengthen his whole body without exception.

"Do you have weighted vests? I want to train my whole body with weights."

"Hmm, weighted vest." The shopkeeper nodded. "I should have something like that in the back."

"So, a vest with a pair of ankle weights and wrist weights, each one weighing four hundred pounds, would fit your build," the man stroked his chin and nodded. "A bit heavier than your standard beginner fare, but with your build, I'm sure it'll be fine."

"Fine with me," Yami shrugged. "How much will they cost?"

"Eh, I'll sell it for two hundred thousand ryo. Consider this a discount as long as you buy your things from here," the man suggested.

Despite the high price, Yami still bought them all, thanks to being the only survivor and receiving the full mission payment all by himself.

"Alright, one moment." The shopkeeper nodded and made his way through a door behind him into the back of the store. He came back out a few minutes later with a ninja vest and what looked like two sets of pale straps, each about ten inches long, with a multitude of rectangular ridges popping up over them.

"Right, each of these pockets contains heavy metal weights within them to add weight to these. They have some seal on them that increases weight or whatever. That's why they're so expensive compared to normal weights," the shopkeeper explained.

Once Yami paid for them, the man handed them over. "They feel alright?" the old man asked him once he wore them.

Yami lifted his arms up and down a few times, then repeated with his legs, getting a feel for the weight. There was definite resistance, but it was manageable.

"Yeah, they're great." He nodded.

Leaving the store, he bought a few more necessary things and ate lunch before heading toward his training spot. Along the way, he stopped to run through some basic exercises to tire himself out and get a bit more used to the weights. Some people gave him funny looks, but he ignored them and continued on his way.

Upon arriving, he sat down under the tree's shade and pulled out his spoils from the library. The first thing he took out was a scroll containing a Taijutsu move and special technique.

The Taijutsu recorded in the scroll was called Flowing Water.

Flowing Water was a defensive martial art rooted in fluidity and adaptability. It emphasized harnessing the power of water's natural movements to gracefully deflect and evade attacks. Practitioners of Flowing Water are trained to seamlessly blend evasion, redirection, and counterattack, mirroring the unpredictable and relentless flow of water. Through disciplined training and precise techniques, they learn to flow with the rhythm of combat, turning an opponent's aggression into opportunities for defense and control.

The practitioners of this martial art could deflect or redirect their opponent's attacks with double the force. It was also possible for the practitioner to deflect attacks that were much more powerful than the user's strength. However, there was a limit to the power that could be redirected, in that the user couldn't redirect attacks that had too much power behind them compared to the user's own strength.

This looked similar to martial arts on Earth. Even though he wasn't an expert, Yami still managed to see the similarities between Flowing Water and Earth martial arts. It looked like a mixture of different martial arts. From the techniques he had read so far, he noticed that some of the moves were similar to the techniques of Aikido and Jujitsu.

What was even better was the existence of a special technique within this Taijutsu called Chakra Discharge. The idea behind it was quite simple: by compressing chakra into a single point in the hands, one could release it in one explosive blow.

He memorized the general forms of the Flowing Water style and went through them for a while atop the stream. It was hard to move with the weights, but he kept it up until his chakra was nearing empty before sitting down atop the water and spending the remaining time he had left before his chakra capacity ran dry pursuing the fuinjutsu manual he had picked up.

Within a few minutes, he already felt a headache coming on. The introduction to the book, for the most part, was memorization of basic fuinjutsu symbols, how they reacted to chakra, and how they overlapped with one another.

It was almost like the coding class he attended once in college, which he wasn't fond of. All these sealing symbols looked complicated, and he didn't understand a thing. But he persisted and kept absorbing the information in the manual.

He knew exactly how strong sealing techniques could be if they were mastered to a certain level. As for why he didn't learn fuinjutsu when he first transmigrated, it was because, without those secret sealing techniques that he wouldn't be able to get his hands on, he needed to strengthen himself, and public fuinjutsu seals didn't contain any destructive seals that would quickly make him stronger. But now that he had some strength to protect himself, it was finally time to learn about these mysterious seals.

And to his surprise, the manual outright had a diagram for creating storage seals and explosive seals. He could make good money selling those things if he successfully created them. But first, he'd need to get some good paper and ink.

So, once his chakra and spiritual energy pretty much dwindled away to near nothing, he hopped off the stream and made his way back into the village, into the shopping sector. Once he bought everything he needed, he went home and practiced on the seals, which without a surprise, were damn hard to copy.

And so, with this, he spent his following days...
