Lance told his mother it wasn't her fault, and they talked a bit more. They wanted to know how he had lived, and he lied in their face about a nice orphanage, not at all mentioning the bad stuff.
His father scrutinized him, apparently knowing that it wasn't true, but giving him a thankful glance; he didn't want his wife to break down again.
His mother also knew, but she let it be, hoping he would speak about everything when they knew each other more and he was ready.
Jace was there only for decoration, but he did not mind, as these two adoptive parents were more of a stranger to him than Lance.
His mother asked if he was hungry, and Lance nodded eagerly for some food.
