Chapter 70: Chapter 70: The Secrets of the Little Loach

As evening came, Light quietly moved to the rooftop. Who knew why, but the Little Loach Pendant was a bit odd today, as it let out a strange radiance. The pendant, an artifact of mystery, had served him faithfully in his journey, but tonight, it seemed to pulsate with an energy all its own, a captivating glow that captured his curiosity.

If other Magicians wanted to collect Soul Remnants or Soul Essences, they had to use the Undead Tools forged by the Undead Magicians. Light pondered the origins of his own pendant. Just where did the Little Loach come from? It was a precious Meditation Tool, and also an Undead Tool. The dual nature of the pendant often left him wondering about the true extent of its powers and capabilities.

Tonight, the light emitted by this little thing was particularly strange. Light had seen it produce such light many times after killing numbers of demon creatures. Now, he decided to use his intent to probe and see what he could find out. Something was different; he could feel it in the air, a whisper of power that beckoned him closer.

The Underground Holy Spring was stored within the Little Loach Pendant, and it was nearly completely digested. The thought of such a powerful source being contained within something so small and unassuming intrigued him. He wondered how much more potential lay dormant within this pendant.

"Why are you being so noisy? Not only are you not asleep in the dead of the night, you're also letting out some strange, green light…" Light muttered to the pendant, sitting on the rooftop as he watched it in confusion. The glow intensified, casting eerie shadows on the rooftop, creating an ambiance that felt both enchanting and foreboding.

As night fell, the Little Loach Pendant began to light up a green radiance. From time to time, it would start to tremble as well. Light's brow furrowed in concentration as his intent wandered deeper. He realized this piece of void was actually not that big. As he proceeded toward the deeper parts, he quickly spotted an incredibly clear river in the middle of it.

The aura emitted by the river was just like the Underground Holy Spring. It was astonishing to discover that there was a murmuring river flowing within the void of the Little Loach Pendant! It seemed to defy the laws of reality, a treasure hidden away in a space that should not exist.

As Light watched carefully, he realized there were thousands of balls of green light hovering above the waters of the river. They looked like a bunch of enlarged fireflies, floating delicately above the river. They began to gather, glittering and shimmering in a way that was simply too beautiful to describe. Light felt a sense of awe wash over him.

In the very beginning, when Light had killed the Spirit Wolf that belonged to Instructor Bai Yang, the Spirit Wolf's soul had been absorbed by the Little Loach Pendant. Ever since, the dead Magical Beasts and the people from the Black Vatican he had killed had all turned into those specks of light as they floated into the Little Loach Pendant. He had thought that those worthless Soul Remnants had all been turned into food for the Little Loach Pendant, but who would've thought that they were all here, transformed into a green lantern hovering above the river? They were all Soul Remnants.

Compared to the Soul Essences, the difference was like a grain of sand and gold. The realization struck him like a bolt of lightning: each tiny speck of light held a fragment of the power he could potentially harness.

As he entered the latter half of the night, the Little Loach Pendant turned restless once more, continuously trembling. Light opened his eyes, startled. Suddenly, the originally scattered green radiance had concentrated greatly. The scattered green radiance and the condensed green radiance were two completely different things. The former was a Soul Remnant, as worthless as a grain of sand, and the latter was a Soul Essence, worth as much as gold!

The problem was, he clearly did not fight anything, nor did he kill any Magical Beasts, so how could the pendant possibly produce a Soul Essence? His mind raced, trying to connect the dots, to understand the workings of this mysterious artifact.

Light hastily used his intent to probe again and was shocked to realize that the thousands of Soul Remnants hovering above the river were no longer there. The space above the river was completely empty, with nearly a hundred Soul Essences glowing with a very concentrated radiance. They sparkled like moonlight, mesmerizing him as he absorbed their beauty.

As dawn broke, he found himself restless. The secrets the Little Loach Pendant revealed were profound and beckoned for exploration. With his heart racing with excitement, he knocked on the old teacher Qiu Yuhua's door the first thing in the morning. The old teacher yawned as he looked at Light and said, "You're up quite early. What's wrong?"

"Sir, I was reading a book regarding the Undead Magic Tools. It said that other than just collecting Soul Essences, they also have one extremely special ability. Do you know about it?" Light asked him, his voice tinged with eagerness.

"Where did you read this book? It must be an ancient book! I actually accidentally came across some very early materials that had some records written down…" Qiu Yuhua responded, his curiosity piqued.

"There's a rumor that there's an Undead Magic Tool that doesn't just collect Soul Essences, but it even has an affinity with Soul Remnants. This is because this type of Undead Magic Tool… is capable of refining those Soul Remnants into a proper Soul Essence!" Qiu Yuhua told Light, his voice laced with intrigue.

As expected, the Little Loach Pendant had turned all those Soul Remnants into a Soul Essence. Owning a pendant that had reached this kind of realm was astonishing. It was far too exceptional, making Light's heart swell with pride and wonder.

"You should already know that Soul Essence is a very good thing. The greatest usage of a Soul Essence is creating a Meditation Magic Tool. However, in the beginning, Soul Essences were not used in that way. Before people used Necromancy to research Stardust Energy or Nebula Energy, Soul Essences were used for strengthening the Stars!" Qiu Yuhua explained, further deepening Light's understanding.

"If it is able to strengthen a Star, does that mean the Magic spells formed from the Stars would also get stronger?" Light immediately asked, his mind racing with possibilities.

"Naturally. If the Star receives a boost, then the spells will also become stronger," Qiu Yuhua replied, a knowing smile on his face.

A Primary Magic required seven Stars, and each of them needed to be fed a Minion-level Soul Essence. Furthermore, if his spells were buffed, the effect probably wouldn't reach the might of an Intermediate Magic due to his Innate Talent of INCREASED BASE SPELL POWER. Light felt a surge of ambition ignite within him.

"Let's continue to study it. If I really can't take it away, then I could only use them to strengthen the Stars," Light thought, determination taking root in his heart.

Using them to strengthen his Stars was still better than having them merely decorate the space above the river. The crucial point was that he'd feel too vexed when he saw them just sitting there, untapped and unrealized.
