"For any of this to make sense," Wu Ningli began. "I need to tell you some things about your father that may change how you see him, and likely not for the better. Please understand that despite his flaws, I loved him deeply and he loved both of us just as much. Nothing I'm about to tell you changes that fact."

"Mother," Wu Ling started, looking directly into Wu Ningli's eyes and seeing many clouded memories swirling there. "The only thing I need to know is that I have a mother who has never once abandoned me and who gave her all to give me the best life she could. Whatever Father was doesn't change anything important to me."
