Chapter 48: 48. Does This Potion Have a Name?

"Is this a potion?" Vera asked, sniffing the air, which still held a faint, lingering stench despite the use of magic. She looked at Allen with a complex expression.

As a sorceress with centuries of alchemical experience, she had collected a vast number of alchemical recipes. There was even a time when she specifically sought out bizarre and unusual potion recipes that had little practical use. Yet, she had never seen anything like what Allen was creating. The smell was secondary; the most critical part was the absence of magic involvement.

Mary, pinching her nose, curiously asked, "Allen, are you making a potion?"

"No, I'm making an elixir," Allen replied.

"An elixir?" Mary glanced at Allen in confusion, then looked at Vera.

The sorceress's face remained expressionless.

"Do you know the difference between a potion and an elixir?"

"An elixir is a mixture involving chaotic magic during its creation and results in a solution rich in magical fluctuations," Allen answered without looking up. This was the most basic concept of elixirs in alchemy, something the sorceress had covered in the first lesson. However, "Killer Whale" was different from ordinary elixirs.

Vera couldn't help but ask, "But you didn't infuse any magic, did you?"

"It doesn't require me to infuse magic. The materials already contain magic," Allen replied, looking up.

"Whose magic?"

"The drowner's."

Vera: ?

Mary: ???

Allen understood their confusion, but the "Killer Whale" elixir was indeed like that. This potion was specifically designed for Witchers. It took into account the Witchers' lack of magic, using almost ordinary potion-making steps to fully extract the magic from the ingredients.

Although the recipe required alchemy level 2 to understand, from Allen's perspective, a typical Witcher apprentice could learn to make this in a month or two if they focused on just this one potion. After all, Witchers' greatest strength was their resistance to toxins; they didn't need to worry too much about removing toxins during the creation process. They just needed to retain the efficacy of the potion. So, the sorceress was not wrong. This elixir was essentially a highly toxic poison.

Time was almost up. The surrounding stench of rotting flesh had dissipated at some point. In its place was a faint smell of seawater. A misty, light gold vapor slowly escaped from the gaps in the cauldron lid, subtle yet clear. Even Allen's Witcher senses could feel the magical fluctuations.

Vera and Mary naturally wouldn't miss it. Mary seemed to have forgotten the previous stench, her small head moving closer and closer, so close that Allen could see the overlapping red marks on her forehead. The sorceress also slightly opened her mouth, her astonishment not less than that of her apprentice.

"Such regular magical fluctuations... it really is an elixir!"

"First, the bone whistle that could summon drowners, and now an elixir with such a simple yet peculiar creation process. Where did Allen get these recipes and knowledge?"

Her beautiful eyes unconsciously shifted from the now-opaque cauldron to the face of the Witcher apprentice. On that youthful, 13-year-old face was a look of seriousness and concentration. Vera knew this was a curiosity and thirst for knowledge, an emotion seen only in scholars and mages.

"Why does the prophecy insist he become a Witcher? My child is clearly a born mage."

The sorceress sighed, pondering a question in her heart: Could a Witcher truly not become a mage?

"Poof~"

A hiss sounded. New phenomena appeared around the cauldron. The light gold mist enveloping the cauldron coalesced and was then immediately drawn back into the cauldron.

At that moment, the Witcher apprentice also moved. He quickly lifted the cauldron, channeling his internal magic to wrap around the cauldron's walls. Then, after silently counting ten heartbeats, he felt the magic enveloping the cauldron's walls vibrate three times.

"Buzz~"

A low, whale-like hum emanated from the cauldron. Allen finally breathed a sigh of relief. He placed the cauldron back on the alchemy table and opened the lid, peering inside with anticipation.

A shallow layer of light gold liquid spread across the bottom of the cauldron. To the Witcher apprentice's further relief, this liquid did not emit any unpleasant odor. Instead, it was crystal clear, almost inviting a taste.

"Did it work?" Mary leaned in, puzzled.

"It seems so," Allen nodded, looking for a container to store the elixir.

Vera handed him an exquisite, transparent crystal bottle.

"There's no need for such a fine bottle..." Allen started to refuse, but the sorceress insisted, pressing the bottle into his hand.

Though he didn't know the prices in the Witcher world, such a delicate bottle clearly wasn't cheap. At least, his "Killer Whale" elixir didn't seem worthy of such a high-end container. But since the sorceress insisted, the Witcher apprentice could only accept it, carefully transferring the elixir into the bottle.

The shallow elixir in the cauldron perfectly filled the small bottle, which was only slightly larger than Allen's index finger. Perhaps due to the bottle's elegance, the light gold "Killer Whale" elixir looked fresh and appealing.

Who would have guessed the foul stench during its creation?

"This elixir looks beautiful. Can I have it?" Vera suddenly asked.

The Witcher apprentice was taken aback but then handed the potion to the sorceress.

"Of course, Vera."

It was just a potion, after all. Though he wanted to test its effects right away, the materials and the alchemy room were all provided for free. The sorceress had also helped him greatly over the past few days.

Vera carefully took the elixir, examining it for a long time. With a satisfied smile that Allen couldn't understand, she pulled out a delicate gold string from somewhere and tied the "Killer Whale" around her neck.

"Allen, does it look good?" Vera asked expectantly.

The Witcher apprentice was stunned. Praising the appearance of the "Killer Whale" was one thing, but wearing the elixir around one's neck was a strange aesthetic choice. However, to be honest, the gold "Killer Whale" did match today's outfit of the sorceress quite well.

Apart from the first day they met, when Vera wore that unforgettable fiery red silk deep V dress, she usually wore high-necked dresses in shades of gray, white, and blue. Today's white linen dress perfectly complemented the "Killer Whale's" gold color. So, although it was odd, Allen honestly praised, "It looks very good."

Vera smiled and nodded. "Mary, bring more materials for Allen to make a few more bottles."

"Yes, Lady Vera."

With a snap of her fingers, an orange portal swirled into existence in the alchemy room. Before stepping in, Vera paused and asked, "By the way, Allen, does this elixir have a name?"

The Witcher apprentice hesitated for a moment, then replied, "Yes. It's called Killer Whale."
