 "First question," Heidi said, giving a fierce look. "When did you and Elijah meet?"

 The sharp blade of the dagger pressed against Emily's neck, and with the slightest pressure from Heidi's hand, it could slice her throat at any moment. Emily's breathing grew heavy, and she answered Heidi truthfully, "I saved him once, when I was a girl."

 "Where?"

 "In my pack."

 Heidi's eyes darkened instantly, and she muttered to herself, "Was it the first time he went on a mission to the south?"

 "And then what?" Heidi asked.

 "Then he went away, and I never saw him again," Emily explained. "Nothing happened between me and him."

 "That's it?" Heidi's tone was one of disbelief.

 "That's it."
