The next few days were a crash course in humanity for Lucifer. Strange, true to his word, began researching the anomaly that had brought Lucifer to the Marvel Universe. In return, Lucifer shared what he knew of cosmic forces and the delicate balance between realities.

"You know," Lucifer mused one afternoon, poring over a tome of interdimensional theory, "if my brother were here, he'd find this terribly amusing. 'Oh look,' he'd say, 'Lucifer's finally hitting the books. Only took an interdimensional catastrophe!'"

Strange glanced up from his own reading. "Your brother... you mean Michael, the archangel?"

"The very same," Lucifer nodded. "Daddy's favorite, the good son. He's probably throwing a party in the Silver City right about now. 'The Devil's gone, break out the ambrosia!'"

Strange noticed the bitterness in Lucifer's tone. "Family... it's complicated, even for celestial beings, it seems."

"You don't know the half of it, Doc," Lucifer sighed. "But enough about my dysfunctional family tree. Any luck with our little problem?"

Before Strange could answer, a commotion outside drew their attention. They looked out to see a group of men accosting a young woman, their intentions clearly nefarious.

"Oh, for Dad's sake," Lucifer growled. "Even without horns and a pitchfork, I can't escape the constant parade of human depravity."

Strange was already moving, his cloak billowing. "Stay here," he commanded. "In your current state..."

But Lucifer was right behind him, a fire in his eyes that had nothing to do with hellish origins. "Not a chance, Doc. Mortal body or not, I'm not about to sit on the sidelines while some miscreants terrorize an innocent."

They burst out onto the street, Strange's hands already weaving mystic symbols. But before he could cast a spell, Lucifer strode forward, his presence suddenly filling the space. The thugs turned, their sneers faltering as they took in the man before them.

"Gentlemen," Lucifer said, his voice soft but carrying an edge that made even Strange pause. "I'm having a rather trying day. Dimensional displacement, power loss, and now I have to deal with you lot. So, I'm going to ask nicely: What do you desire? What sick little fantasy are you hoping to fulfill here?"

One of the thugs, a burly man with a neck tattoo, stepped forward. "Hey, buddy, this ain't none of your business. So why don't you..."

But his words trailed off as he met Lucifer's gaze. The thug's eyes widened, his tough facade crumbling. "I... I just wanted to feel strong," he admitted, his voice small. "Dad always said I was weak, that I'd never amount to anything..."

"Ah, daddy issues," Lucifer nodded. "A universal constant, it seems. But tell me, does this," he gestured to the frightened woman, "make you feel strong? Or does it just prove dear old dad right?"

The other thugs were backing away now, unnerved by their leader's sudden confession and the strange power in Lucifer's words. The woman took the opportunity to run, casting a grateful look at her saviors.

"Now," Lucifer continued, "I suggest you lot find a better way to deal with your inadequacies. Therapy, perhaps. Or a good scotch. Anything's better than this pathetic display."

The thugs scattered, their leader casting one last, haunted look at Lucifer before hurrying away. Lucifer watched them go, a mixture of satisfaction and confusion on his face. He turned to Strange, who was staring at him with newfound interest.

"That," Strange said slowly, "was not ordinary persuasion. You tapped into something there, Morningstar. A fragment of your former power."

Lucifer looked at his hands, feeling a faint echo of the energy that once coursed through his celestial form. "Well, well," he murmured. "It seems the old infernal spark isn't completely snuffed out. Though I must say, it lacks a certain... oomph."

Strange nodded, his analytical mind already whirring. "It responded to the situation, to your innate sense of... what? Justice? Retribution?"

"A bit of both, with a dash of sheer annoyance," Lucifer admitted. "I may be the Devil, Strange, but even I have standards. Petty thuggery is so... pedestrian."

Over the next few weeks, Lucifer found himself in similar situations. A mugging here, an attempted carjacking there. Each time, his fragment of power manifested, growing stronger with each use. It was different from his old abilities - more focused, less about raw power and more about understanding and manipulating desires.

"It's fascinating," Strange mused after one such incident. "It's as if your power is adapting to this universe, becoming something new."

"Or perhaps," Lucifer countered, a gleam in his eye, "this universe is adapting to me. After all, I did bring a little chaos into your orderly superhero world."

Strange rolled his eyes, but there was a hint of a smile on his face. "Chaos is one thing we're not short on, Morningstar. Though I'll admit, your brand has a certain... style."

Lucifer grinned, preening a bit at the compliment. "Why, Doctor, are you saying you're starting to enjoy my devilish company?"

"Let's not get carried away," Strange said dryly. But there was no heat in his words. Despite himself, he was starting to see beyond the quips and bravado to the complex being underneath.

As they walked back to the Sanctum, Lucifer felt a strange sense of purpose. He was still determined to return to his own universe, to reclaim his throne and his full powers. But for now, in this world of costumed heroes and masked villains, he was finding a new role. Not quite hero, not quite villain, but something uniquely... him.

"You know, Strange," Lucifer said as they climbed the steps, "I'm starting to think this little interdimensional detour might not be a complete waste after all. Who knows? By the time we figure out how to send me back, I might just have this whole city eating out of my hand."

Strange chuckled. "Just remember, Morningstar, this isn't your kingdom. And here, even the Devil has to play by some rules."

"Rules, my dear Doctor?" Lucifer's eyes glinted mischievously. "You should know by now, I don't play by rules. I rewrite them."

And as they entered the Sanctum, the setting sun cast long shadows on the street, as if even the light was bending to the will of the mortal Devil who now walked among Earth's Mightiest Heroes. The game was changing, and Lucifer Morningstar was determined to be the one dealing the cards.
