Chapter 7: Chapter 7

The acrid smell of smoke hung heavy in the Gotham air as Abel Gordon made his way through the crowded hallways of Gotham Academy. His enhanced senses picked up snippets of conversation all around him, most centered on the latest in a string of mysterious warehouse fires that had been plaguing the city.

"Did you hear? Another one went up last night," a senior whispered to his friend. "That's the third this month."

Abel's ears perked up, his mind already shifting into Private Eye mode. He'd been following the warehouse fire cases closely, suspecting there was more to them than simple arson. But his investigations had been hampered by his increasingly complicated double life.

As he slid into his seat for Advanced Physics, Abel caught sight of his reflection in the classroom window. Dark circles under his eyes betrayed the late nights spent patrolling as Private Eye. But there was also a sharpness to his gaze that hadn't been there before, a focus that was reflected in his steadily improving grades.

"Mr. Gordon," his teacher, Dr. Emerson, called out. "Perhaps you'd like to share your thoughts on quantum entanglement?"

A year ago, Abel might have slouched in his seat, deflecting the teacher's attention with a sarcastic remark or a half-hearted shrug. He would have mumbled something barely coherent, his mind more preoccupied with after-school plans than the intricacies of quantum physics. But that was before everything changed.

Now, Abel straightened up in his chair, a newfound confidence radiating from him. His eyes met Dr. Emerson's with a spark of eagerness, his mind already accessing the wealth of information he had absorbed during his late-night study session.

"Quantum entanglement," Abel began, his voice clear and steady, "is a fundamental phenomenon in quantum mechanics where two or more particles become interconnected in such a way that the state of one particle instantly influences the state of the other, regardless of the distance separating them."

He paused, letting the initial definition settle in before diving deeper. "This entanglement means that the particles share a single, unified quantum state. If we measure the state of one particle, we can immediately know the state of the other, no matter how far apart they are. This occurs because their properties are correlated in a way that can't be explained by classical physics."

Dr. Emerson nodded, encouraging Abel to continue. The rest of the class watched, captivated by Abel's transformation from an indifferent student to a knowledgeable and articulate young scholar.

"This phenomenon was first discussed by Einstein, Podolsky, and Rosen in the EPR paradox," Abel continued. "Einstein famously referred to it as 'spooky action at a distance' because it seemed to violate the principle of locality, which states that an object is only directly influenced by its immediate surroundings."

He leaned forward slightly, his enthusiasm growing. "However, subsequent experiments, particularly those involving Bell's theorem, have demonstrated that quantum entanglement is real and that it doesn't violate relativity because no information is actually transmitted faster than light. Instead, the entangled particles remain part of a single, unified system, and their states are determined together in a way that transcends classical understanding."

Abel glanced around the room, seeing a mix of awe and intrigue on his classmates' faces. He felt a surge of pride and continued. "Entanglement has practical applications too, particularly in the field of quantum computing and quantum cryptography. Quantum computers leverage entangled particles to perform complex calculations at speeds unattainable by classical computers. In quantum cryptography, entanglement is used to create theoretically unbreakable encryption methods, as any attempt to eavesdrop on the communication would disturb the entangled state and be immediately detectable."

As Abel wrapped up his explanation, he realized he had spoken for several minutes without hesitation. The room was silent for a moment before Dr. Emerson broke into a broad smile. "Well... that's quite correct, Abel. Very impressive."

As class ended, Abel overheard Dr. Emerson murmuring to another teacher, "I don't know what's gotten into that Gordon boy, but whatever it is, I hope it sticks."

The praise should have felt good, but instead, it only added to the weight of deception Abel carried. His improved academic performance and reduced delinquent behavior were drawing attention – not all of it welcome.

That evening at dinner, the tension in the Gordon household was palpable. Jim Gordon looked exhausted, the warehouse fire cases clearly weighing on him. Barbara kept shooting concerned glances between her father and brother.

"So, Abel," Jim began, his tone carefully neutral. "Dr. Emerson called today. Says you've been doing exceptional work lately."

Abel shrugged, pushing food around his plate. "Just trying to apply myself more."

"That's great, son. Really." Jim paused, choosing his next words carefully. "But I can't help feeling like there's something you're not telling us. You're out late most nights, always distracted... If you're in some kind of trouble-"

"I'm not in trouble, Dad," Abel interrupted, an edge of frustration in his voice. "Why is it so hard to believe I might just be trying to do better?"

"Because I know you, Abel. This sudden change... it's not like you."

The irony of his father's words wasn't lost on Abel. If only Jim knew just how much his son had changed.

"Maybe you don't know me as well as you think," Abel muttered, standing up abruptly. "I've got homework. Thanks for dinner."

As he retreated to his room, Abel could feel the worry radiating off his father and sister. The guilt gnawed at him, but he pushed it aside. He had work to do.
