Chapter 42: Shimura Danzō
"Who did this?!"
Seeing the ruined experimental base, Danzō was furious. His years of research and materials were all destroyed!
"Lord Danzō, it is confirmed that all our people are dead," a Root member reported.
"All dead? How can this be?!" Danzō looked in disbelief.
Because of the importance of the information in this experimental base, Danzō had arranged dozens of ninjas for its protection. These ninjas were all elite, including one Elite Jōnin and two Jōnin. Such a configuration was more than enough to destroy even a small ninja village. Yet they were all dead in such a short time.
"Bring me the bodies."
Danzō gave the order, and the corpses of the Root ninjas were quickly brought up.
"Yamanaka Dashora, check their memories."
"Yes, sir!"

"And the Uchiha clan..."
"Hey! There are even Hyuga branch house ninjas here!"
Soon, the heads of each clan discovered their respective clan members. These ninjas had either disappeared inexplicably or were reported dead on missions. But now, they were found preserved in nutrient tanks.
"Danzō, what is going on here? You better explain!"
The clan heads stared angrily at Danzō.
"This matter is confidential to the village, and you have no right to interfere. Get out of here, or I will hold you accountable!"
Danzō wiped the cold sweat from his forehead and said sternly. He knew that at times like this, he couldn't show weakness. Otherwise, he might not get out alive today.
"Confidential? Are you saying the village's secret involves conducting human experiments on our clan members behind our backs?" Uchiha Chishima asked loudly.
He had long suspected Danzō's ill intentions toward the Uchiha clan but never expected the other party would use Uchiha members for human experiments. Moreover, a pair of Three Tomoe Sharingan was stored in a nutrient tank. What was Danzō planning?
The other clan leaders reacted similarly to Uchiha Chishima. Clans with bloodline limits or secret techniques feared this kind of thing the most. If everyone wanted to study their bodies, wouldn't they become targets?
"Let's not talk about this for now. I also want to ask why you dared to attack the village's experimental base!" Seeing the matter was revealed, Danzō decided to counter-attack.

"What we are asking about now is human experimentation. Explain yourself!"
"Protect Lord Danzō!"
The two groups confronted each other, and the atmosphere grew tense. Just then, Sarutobi Hiruzen arrived with a group of Anbu.
"Lord Hokage!"
Seeing Sarutobi Hiruzen, the clan heads reported the human experiments. Sarutobi Hiruzen grew more and more alarmed as he listened. Hadn't these experiments been stopped long ago? How much more had Danzō done behind his back? And now, they had caught him red-handed. This was a disaster.
"Hiruzen, they should be held accountable for attacking the experimental base first," Danzō insisted, recounting the attack. His words only fueled the clan leaders' anger.
"Today's events are indeed strange."
"Everyone, please return home. I will thoroughly investigate all matters!" Sarutobi Hiruzen decided firmly.
After much arguing, the clan leaders finally left with their clansmen.
"Danzō, you fool!" Sarutobi Hiruzen fumed once they were alone. This was a serious problem.
"Danzō, please temporarily step down as Hokage advisor and Root leader. I'll handle the rest."
Danzō was crucial to him, and he needed to be saved.
"What about the clan leaders? They attacked the experimental base!" Danzō protested angrily. His losses were enormous, and he'd never suffered such a blow since gaining power.
"Enough. Do you want me to punish all the clan heads? Remember, I am the Hokage!"
"Hiruzen, you'll regret this."
My greatest regret is that I chose you as my partner, you idiot!
Watching Danzō's departing figure, Sarutobi Hiruzen sighed.
