The Captain, the head of the research division agreed with my idea to test Shiro in order to try and figure out what her other half is, but of course with a price.
"Hold my hand if you need to."
"Nn."
Shiro immediately grabs my hand as she's now seated on a bed. We're in a room that's deeper inside and I can't say I've never been in here. Normally I wouldn't actually be allowed in here, but the Captain allowed it as I am technically responsible for Shiro.
"How long will this take?"
I end up asking the Captain along with the other men inside.
"However long it takes to extract three liters of her blood."
"...Fine."
Normally, three liters would be far too much, arguably borderline dangerous, but since Shiro's body is able to immediately replenish itself, it shouldn't be all that dangerous. But I can't help but feel worried.
"Alright, could you hold out her arm for me?" One of the men asks me as I end up complying, turning her arm over to expose her veins.
"Charlotte?" Of course, Shiro is getting a bit nervous as she looks at me through her mask.
"It'll be okay. They just need some of your blood. If it hurts you can just squeeze down on my hand, okay?"
"Okay..."
Almost immediately after I say that, the man pierces Shiro's arm with the needle that's hooked up to some sort of container. Shiro did squeeze down on my hand, albeit slightly before immediately loosening back up in the next second.
"See? It's not so bad."
"Nn."
I smile at her, trying my best to ease her through this, but in the back of my mind, if these guys want to try something and force her to stay back, then I won't hesitate to get her out, but I know they're not that stupid to try something like that.
"Alright." The Captain says as he approaches us once more. "Lieutenant, could you put this on her chest?" It's a small device he's holding, looking like some sort of sensor that I saw in hospitals.
"What is it?" That said, I needed to ask just in case.
"It's just a mana sensory device. It'll measure the concentration of mana in her body."
"Alright."
I take the device from his hands before turning back to Shiro.
"Shiro, I need to put this on you."
"Nn. Okay."
Undoing a few of her buttons, I expose enough of her chest where I can safely attached the device over her chest without revealing too much skin. Well, she is wearing a bra, but still...
Once I got it in place, the Captain came back with a tablet, showing me the display of it. Of course, what is displayed is Shiro's mana fluctuations. Typically the average person, vampire, wolf, lizard, any species really has a safe range of about 30-50% of mana by volume of blood. Anything less, like what you'd typically find in elderly means that the individual is growing weaker and is nearing death. Anything above 50% and the risk of going berserk, like turning into a devil is much higher.
In Shiro's case...
"45%..." I mutter those words as I felt my body loosening up.
"Correct. It's well in the normal range for someone her age."
"Then could we begin the tests?"
"After the collection of her blood is done, yes."
Which didn't take too much longer as the needle stuck inside Shiro's arm was eventually removed, and just like the needle back when we registered Shiro at the guild, the little hole that remained quickly sealed, leaving no scar whatsoever.
"Is it done?" Shiro ends up speaking up first towards the Captain.
"Not quite. The Lieutenant wants us to conduct some tests on you. Lieutenant, could you two follow me?
And so, after walking for a bit, we come into a testing room, looking to be similar to the one the originally housed Shiro, however there's many devices in the room, making for a different vibe than the isolated feel like before.
We first went to a basin that housed what looked to be just normal water.
"I'll let you handle the girl." The Captain says as he continues to look at the tablet in his hands.
"Right. Okay, Shiro. This might be painful, but if it gets too much just let me know."
"Nn."
We then begin the tests.
Unlike Luna's spa, Shiro simply puts her hands into the basin of water. Nothing seems to be happening so I look over to the Captain.
"Not much reaction." In other words, Shiro's body is accepting it, but in this day and age, it's rare for someone to react to water, but we had to rule it out.
Next was a basin filled with soil. Again, something normal, and something that I know shouldn't cause any reaction. And upon looking at the Captain, it was the same result.
It was the next two that came with issues. Shiro then stuck her hand in what looked to be an empty container, but immediately upon sticking her arm inside it-
"Hnng!" Shiro flinched in pain before quickly pulling her arm out. However-
"No noticeable reaction." Despite Shiro reacting like that, the Captain still says that no reaction happened.
The next, and arguably the scariest was the fire test. For this test, Shiro had to place her hand on a metal plate which slowly began to emit fire magic, quickly heating up the plate under her hand. Again, it didn't take long for Shiro take her hand away from the pain. I quickly looked at her hand, but whatever sign of burns there were are no longer to be seen.
"Yeah, this is all just normal." The Captain, seeming to be uninterested in this speaks up once more before lowering the tablet.
"Really? Nothing?"
"Yeah. In terms of the data I've collected, it's impossible for her mother to be any reptilian species, or draconic for that matter, as well as any other specialized species like mermaids or birdmen."
So in other words, we've only eliminated the outliers...
"Well at least that's something I guess."
"Right, now thank you for the blood. Fell free to come again in a months time."
"I'll pass for now."
And so, Shiro and I leave the research division, making our way back to the foyer to join back up with Lisa.
