Chapter 56: Knock At The Past
"It's alright. It's not an easy thing to pull off, especially on your first attempt."
We came back to Lisa's place. I was a bit dejected being unable to do what Charlotte did, so she's trying to make me feel better. Maybe if I didn't already know what I was capable of I could accept that, but after being unable to make a simple flame like Charlotte's, I couldn't help but feel defeated.
"Oi, did ya grab me some booze?"
"Yes~" Lisa came over to greet us the moment we entered the lounge. Charlotte ends up putting the couple bottles of wine that she got from Luna as Lisa immediately went to pick up one of them. "Hey, don't drink it yet. You have work, right?"
"I know~ I was just curious which ones Luna got this time." I watch as Lisa eyes up the bottles with a smile on her face before putting them into the fridge. "Thank you."
"No problem."
"Hey, so how did Shiro do, today?"
"Well, actually-"
We ended up telling Lisa everything that happened today, regarding how I was able to look at all the creatures and animals directly without killing a single one of them. Just like Charlotte, Lisa too looked surprised upon hearing everything from Charlotte.
"You think you can look at me as well, Shiro?"
"I uhh..." My body immediately froze up at the thought.
"We were thinking about that, but we still don't fully understand everything. So we'll wait for mom to finish with her business."
"Hahh~ Okay... I was hoping to finally get to see what's under that mask..." Lisa's voice also seems dejected at the end there. I also want for that to happen, but I can't risk killing Charlotte's loved ones.
"Hehehe, it's quite a sight." But in contrast to Lisa's down expression, Charlotte seemed almost smug.
"Wait, you've seen her face?!"
"Mhmm~"
"That's so unfair!"
"Hehehe. Just be happy with the alcohol for now, okay?"
"...Fine~"
It's strange to remember how proud and dominating Lisa is when I see her act all childish like this. It almost looks like Charlotte is the one that's older. Remembering Lisa interrogate that vampire, or that time when I saw her in that room with all the other people before I left that facility... It's hard to think that the Lisa right here and now is the same person.
"Hey, I didn't mean you can drink it now." Charlotte having notice Lisa opening the fridge, called out to her.
"Ehh~ But you said I could."
"Don't be a tease. You know it's not a good idea."
"Haahhh!" Defeated, Lisa slumps onto the kitchen table top. "I can't have anything, huh."
"Hehe. Thank you for all the hard work." It was then that Charlotte pat Lisa's head whilst she was still slumped down on table.
"Mmm~ Feels nice~"
Seeing the two of them together really does make it seem like they're family, like sisters. I find it fun to watch them interact with one another as I find the corners of my mouth arch up into a smile. I wonder if Charlotte and I will be like this in the future? That thought crossed my mind as I watch them, hoping for that to one day become true.
However, out of nowhere, a knock came from the front door, promoting both Lisa and Charlotte to straighten up. Their demeanor no longer relaxed, but more so stern. It was then that a thought came to mind.
"The man in glasses?"
"Better not be." Lisa says that in a more lower tone before approaching the door. Charlotte proceeded to move to my side as Lisa went to open the door.
I was expecting the man in glasses, but as I look out the front door, I saw a woman, smaller in size compared to Lisa or Charlotte, looking about the same height as me. She wore what looked to be a white coat along with see-through glasses.
"Huh? Wait, what are you doing here?" Lisa, looking down at the woman seemed surprised by the sight of her.
"S-sorry for disturbing you, Major!" The woman spoke in a sharp and awkward tone, as if frightened by Lisa.
"What is it?" However, Lisa spoke in a much more relaxed tone, almost dismissive in a way which seems to have made the woman even more nervous.
"It's about your proposal. Is the girl here?" While asking that, the woman caught sight of me and Charlotte as her face immediately tensed up.
"Yeah? What about it?"
"The General wants you to bring the girl back." I feel my body grow cold upon hearing those words. They... Want me back in the white room?
"What?!" It was Charlotte who finally spoke up, raising her voice that had anger mixed in, which only led for the woman to almost jump backwards, almost falling down the few stairs. It honestly surprised me as well, but mainly due to the sudden increase in volume as the coldness I felt just before has now quickly vanished. It makes me happy to see Charlotte get angry for my sake... "What's the meaning of this?" Charlotte ends up storming off to the front door as I quickly catch up to her. Lisa however remained composed.
"I-it isn't what you may think, L-Lieutenant."
"Oh yeah? Then what is it then?!" Charlotte only seemed to be getting more angry with every word that comes out of the woman's mouth, causing the woman to fall silent at Charlotte's onslaught.
"Charlotte. Calm down."
"Lisa?"
"I doubt it'll come to that, especially with the news you gave me just before."
"...As long as I stay by Shiro, then fine."
"Y-yes! There shouldn't be any problems with that!" The woman, after seeing Charlotte finally calm down a bit finally managed to speak up once more. But I'm still confused on what's actually going on...
