Chapter 5: 5: Final fight

I couldn't see the fight or its beginning, but I could hear the tyrant hitting, shouting, and the clash of swords against flesh.

Then I heard a great crash coming from below the wall and felt several heavy footsteps approaching my position.

'Damnation.'

A beast was approaching me. I stood up and finally managed to see what was happening.

Gareth was fighting head-on against the tyrant while the other five supported him from the sides, holding against the tyrant's claws and tail.

The six of them seemed like a great team, fighting splendidly together without speaking.

I turned my gaze to where the footsteps were heard climbing and saw one of those creatures running in my direction, clearly wanting to eat my soul and flesh.

'Well, it's time to run for my life.'

...

Huh? Why am I still here? Am I trapped by something?

I looked down and saw what was keeping me in place.

My own legs were trembling so much that I could fall at any moment. They weren't responding and kept me in place, gifting me to the ferocious beast that was already a few meters away from me.

"SHIT!"

I raised the dagger Gareth had given me, hoping it would be strong enough to pierce the creature's flesh.

The deformed dog made a great leap towards me and in the air raised its front paws, ready to cut me in two.

"MOVE, DAMN IT!"

My body reacted at the last moment and fell beneath the creature's claws. As it passed over me, I raised my dagger and it easily lodged into its flesh, tearing its stomach open in two from the momentum of its own jump.

[You have killed a latent beast, subject of the guardian.]

The spell's voice surprised me, speaking as if it were in my ears.

I quickly stood up and saw Gareth fall along with the other four awake at the edge of the wall.

Wait... Four?

I looked on the ground ravaged by the battle and saw Deymos, the scout boy who had reported about the tyrant. His stomach had a large hole in the middle, from which a great amount of blood was dripping every moment.

I ran to Deymos, not knowing what I could do to help this boy who was on the brink of death.

However, when he heard my steps, he turned his head in my direction and his eyes shone.

"You! Come here quickly, I need your help."

I didn't know how I could help him in that state, but I still obeyed and approached him.

"Listen carefully... I need you to kill me. That thing pierced me with its sting and I will become one of its creatures if its venom finishes running through my bo-"

His speech was interrupted by a torrent of blood that he spat from his mouth and splattered my body.

From his legs, they began to mutate and bend, his feet broke, and several claws protruded.

With a last effort, Deymos shouted at me:

"Quick! Please kill me."

I quickly raised my dagger and obeyed the poor man. I drove my dagger into his forehead and it pierced through as easily as it did the tyrant's subject.

A final smile appeared on Deymos's face.

[You have killed an awakened human, Deymos.]

I looked at his body for a moment.

'I killed a person, it's the first time that...'

'No, I must concentrate, it's not the time to think about these things.'

With that done, I ran back to the edge of the wall and saw how Gareth faced the tyrant. The other four seemed to be badly injured and on the verge of death.

As for the tyrant, he wasn't in much better condition. He was missing two legs, his body was full of cuts, his tail was severely wounded, and a lot of blood was dripping from his body.

Gareth had several parts of his armor stained with blood and holes everywhere, he was on his last legs.

When I realized that exactly the same thing was about to happen as in my nightmare vision, I started running to the stairs to go down and try to do something.

If I don't change that ending, the tyrant will remain alive and I will die.

When I reached the stairs, only a few seconds had passed, so I jumped down with large leaps that hurt my legs and reached the ground in a couple of more seconds.

Not a minute had passed since I saw the five of them from above that I was already on the ground, a few meters from the fight.

The tyrant had thrown Gareth aside and was now attacking the brothers.

I saw Seigar block an attack from the tyrant with his shield and it threw him aside without much effort.

The tyrant was now running towards Sognar, who was injured in his leg and couldn't run.

Belen and Magnus ran behind the tyrant to stop him and Gareth had just gotten up.

The tyrant was very fast, his wounded tail pierced Sognar's chest without much resistance, Sognar was already very injured and could do nothing.

Seigar's scream when he saw this made my heart clench. It was such a heartbreaking scream that it caught the tyrant's attention, who was now running towards him.

Seigar stood up and his sword flew through the air, trying to cut the tyrant.

Gareth was only a few meters away, while Magnus and Belen were already pointing their weapons at the tyrant.

The tyrant made a quick turn of his body and cut both in the chest, leaving them incapacitated, while his head had dodged Seigar's attack.

His tail slid through the air and pierced Seigar's body, suffering the same fate as his brother.

Gareth appeared the next instant and his sword cut the tyrant's tail, taking one of his weapons.

The tyrant let out a beastly roar and resumed fighting Gareth.

Knowing what would happen to the brothers if left like that, I ran to Sognar and stood for a moment looking at his body on the brink of death.

I raised my dagger and drove it into his head, just in time as his legs and arms had started to deform.

[You have killed an awakened human, Sognar.]

Then I ran to Seigar.

"I'm very sorry to do this."

With that and before the awakened could say anything, I drove my dagger into his head.

[You have killed an awakened human, Seigar.]

The other two awakened seemed to be unconscious and I turned my attention back to the tyrant.

Gareth was losing to the tyrant, who had his jaws closed around Gareth's neck.

He looked at me for a second and his eyes widened.

Then, to my surprise, I saw his sword begin to emanate a great light around it.

My blinded eyes couldn't see how the sword exploded beneath the tyrant's body, creating several holes all over him.

After several seconds of being blinded, I managed to regain my sight and saw a disgusting scene.

I saw the tyrant's body full of holes all over his large body, hundreds of small holes in his stomach and several larger ones between his limbs.

Gareth was a few meters away, his neck emitting a torrent of blood that threatened to take his life at any moment.

My eyes saw something move at the other end of my vision and I turned my head...

...only to see the tyrant still moving.

'No, no, no. Damn it! How the hell can it survive that attack.'

I ran to Gareth and when I arrived just two or three seconds later, he raised his gaze to my face and spoke to me:

"Oh, it's good that... I was able to control myself."

"Gareth! You can't die yet, the tyrant is still moving. Please don't die now, you must get up!."

He looked at me for a few seconds and spat blood, then spoke:

"No... I can no longer... Move. Use your... The dagger I gave you... It can kill him."

I quickly looked at the dagger in my hand and then at the disgusting tyrant struggling to get up, his jaw now broken and useless.

"Right... You must kill... Kill me. That thing... Poisoned me..."

My head quickly turned to his neck and I could see a rotten-looking liquid faintly mixed with his blood.

I immediately knew what he meant by poisoned.

"Are you sure about this, Gareth?"

My voice came out lower and more broken than I wanted, but Gareth just moved his head a bit, nodding.

"Forgive me for this."

I raised my hands and the dagger was lifted just above his forehead.

Then I lowered it.

[You have killed an ascended human, Gareth of the fallen guard.]

Guard...? No, it's not the time.

I looked again at the tyrant still stubbornly moving as he tried to get up. I ran towards him with the dagger firm in my hand.

When I reached him, his eyes looked at me, filled with a corrupt rage, and his broken jaw moved in my direction.

But it was too late, his jaw was broken and my dagger had already managed to barely pierce his sunken skull.

The spell spoke again.

[You have killed an awakened tyrant, fallen guardian of the ruins.]

I waited a moment for it to announce the end of the nightmare and, as if responding to my thoughts, the spell spoke once more.

[Wake up, Jonathan! Your nightmare is over.]

[Prepare for evaluation...]
