Chapter 10: The Lurker

As his junior bankers counted the vast sum of money, Durgin Blackforge pulled out two magic cards for his new client, Dante King, and his wife, Freya Valmore.

"Here are your magic cards. They have no upper spending limit, so go ahead and purchase whatever you want. I will take care of the actual purchase negotiations on your behalf."

Dante took the two magic cards and gave one to Freya. He was quite pleased with not having to pay for things with actual money. It's about time the Wizarding World from a children's book entered modern magical society.

Freya took her magical card and examined it. She was surprised to see a few magic enchantments on it that she was unfamiliar with. This discovery greatly pleased her. She loved to discover new technologies and magic. It was one of her hobbies outside of devouring worlds.

But now that she had ascended, there was no longer a need for souls. Knowledge, however, was something she would never stop needing.

After Freya put away the magic card, she looked at all the gold that Dante had left on the floor of the vault. Her husband really loved to rob the wealth of others. Freya knew that a few measly acres of gold were nothing in Dante's eyes. This man robbed and pillaged an entire world full of countless billions of souls. The misery and suffering he inflicted in that world was truly a delightful meal.

But looking closely at Vault 17 and seeing that it held countless enchantments and hexes, she began to study them. Freya began to compare it to the knowledge that the Wizarding World had access to today. Was it possible that at some point, something happened to the magic of this world, resulting in the magic freely available to people regressing rather than advancing?

If that was the case, Freya could believe it. It seemed as if the magic available in London and other countries was being purposely restricted from advancement. This could explain the cleanliness issue these wizards and witches in London seemed to have. They looked and dressed as if it were still the 1600s of Medieval Europe.

Dante could already smell a conspiracy in the air, and so could she. Freya could not wait to see how she could throw a wrench in these plans and then take advantage of the chaos for her and Dante's personal benefit.

Freya was very interested in the hidden mysteries of this world. For instance, what happened to the elves in London? The house-elves were clearly linked with this mystery. She would start her investigations when they acquired two of them for personal use in the next few days.

With the enchantments for this vault in place, the only other person who could access it besides them was Durgin Blackforge. Still, Freya never trusted others easily. She looked at Dante with a charming smile on her lips as a great thought came to her mind.

"Dante, you should leave one of your servants behind to guard this treasure hoard. It is important for me not to lose face in front of others because someone managed to steal from us."

Dante heard his wife's words and nodded. Unknown to Durgin Blackforge, something black and sinister crawled out from Dante's shadow. It had festering burns on its black body with sharp claws and a mouth full of razor-sharp teeth. This little thing was called a Lurker; it was almost completely immune to magic, making it the perfect guard against these wizards who relied too much on magic and not enough on physical prowess.

Looking at the Lurker, Dante said, "Leave the goblins alone. You can kill anything else that enters this vault. Also, don't go wandering around."

The Lurker heard its master's orders, bowed its head in acceptance, and then melted into the shadows of the room.
