Chapter 12: The first reactions

"Are these the Pokémon for this update?"

At the Pokémon Center in Seaside City, a crowd gathered. Some were merely curious, while others were avid pet enthusiasts.

However, the information displayed by the Pokémon Center left many perplexed.

"Is that a mouse?" A person exclaimed, pointing at Rattata's holographic projection. "And this, a massive caterpillar??? With horns?!"

"There are caterpillars with leaves on their heads!"

Caterpie and Weedle lay displayed, intriguing and confusing onlookers.

"And bats!" Another person gestured to Zubat.

"What's with this giant praying mantis? But it's oddly charming!" Scyther's appearance still held a certain allure.

"What's John thinking? Are these supposed to be pets???" Someone complained.

Listening to the comments and complaints from afar, John's head throbbed. There were plenty of attractive Pokémon!

He had come to witness how players reacted to Pokémon while also selected his own Pokémon.

Though not fully prepared to immerse himself in the game, claiming Pokémon was still a necessity.

The scene unfolded just as he envisioned. While not everyone came, those who did lingered, engrossed in learning more about Pokémon from the illustrated booklets.

Their curiosity sparked a budding interest in Pokémon, often the first step towards affection.

Of course, apart from those frantically pushing without gaining anything.

Within the Pokémon Center, several battlefields were set up, and players were already engaging in battles using basic moves.

Hit, hit... hit.

In one arena, a long-haired girl in a purple knee-length skirt dominated the field. That was Lily.

Leveraging her status as a private server player and using the information given by John to her, Lily exploited these new players to gain experience, drawing a crowd to watch her battles.

Many who thought themselves clever went to acquire Pokémon like hers, only to be disappointed.

For Lily had chosen a snake-like Pokémon with a dark blue back, a light white belly, and white fins on either side of its head—a Dratini!

Among the Pokémon distributed, aside from the rare starter trio, John introduced only one Dratini and one Scyther.

Scyther was added for its strength, while Dratini was added solely for its rarity.

Though Dratini itself wasn't that overpowered, its final evolution, the quasi-legendary Dragonite, held immense power.

Among the 151 first-generation Pokémon, only Mewtwo surpassed it in rank, showcasing its might.

John, on the other hand, opted for Pikachu.

However, this Pikachu was perhaps too adorable. John thought that he wouldn't be able to evolve this Pikachu into Raichu because of its cuteness.

"Pika? PikaPika"

Perhaps sensing John's hesitation, Pikachu perched on his shoulder softly cooed, nuzzling its soft fur against his ear in agreement.

"It's up to you! Scyther!"

Meanwhile, the Scyther that John had been observing was finally chosen by someone captivated by its appearance.

John's gaze followed the person, observing as they released Scyther from its Poké Ball and scanned it with their newly acquired Pokedex.

"So you're Scyther, I can see that you are as dashing as me!"

"Scythe!"

Scyther raised its scythes in a fighting stance.

"You think we're equally dashing, don't you? That's why I chose you!"

John: "...I think it just wants to fight."

John couldn't resist intervening, reminding the person just in time.

"Huh? Is that so?"

The person looked at the serious expression of Scyther, thanking John, "Alright! Let's battle!"

With enthusiasm, they led Scyther to the battlefield.

"Scythe!"

"Let's go and battle scyther!"

John observed that not only was the scyther strong, but even his new trainer was pretty good at directing in battles. Both of them soon defeated all of their opponents. Then the real game began as now it was time for the battle between Scyther and Lily's Dragonite.

"Now, the real show begins!"

With the entrance of Scyther, the arena gained another warrior. John brought Pikachu to watch discreetly, activating the camera in the process.

Scyther, specially chosen by John to promote Pokémon, needed to engage in a captivating battle for optimal promotion. And what better opponent than Lily?

Though Dratini and Sycther were currently similar in terms of power, but Lily's command prowess far surpassed that of these novices, making for an engaging battle!

Observing from the sidelines, John couldn't shake off the feeling of déjà vu, almost like seeing a familiar figure wearing a hat.

As the battle unfolded, John found himself lost in thought.

Chapter 13: The succesful Battle

"Scyther! Charge over and slash with your scythe blade!"

Well, as a novice trainer who just learned about Pokémon, it is normal not to be able to remember moves.

"Hey!"

During these times, the Scyther seemed to have gotten used to it, with its arms outstretched, its scythe blades shining coldly, its wings vibrating violently, and it rushed towards the Dratini at a breakneck speed.

Lily was not in a hurry and commanded calmly, "Don't panic, Dratini. Twist your body to dodge, and use Thunder Wave at the same time!"

The snake-shaped body of the Dratini was extremely flexible, and the green figure of the Scyther got close to its body. The scythes on both arms were swayed by the Dratini, dodging each attack.

The next moment, the Dratini spat out a small golden ball, which landed directly on the nearby Scyther.

Sensing the danger, the Scyther bounced back reflexively, but it had already been hit by the Thunder Wave, so its movements were obviously a bit stiff compared to before.

"Yes, it was successful!" Lily smiled slightly.

Under John's guidance, she had greatly improved her ability to use status effect moves efficiently. She was now like an expert trainer making good judgments based on the situation.

"Dratini, now use Dragon Rage!"

The moment the Scyther retreated, a light-coloured energy ball accumulated in the mouth of the Dratini again and shot directly toward the Scyther after a while.

"Woo~"

"Hey!"

Scyther subconsciously wanted to dodge, but Lily's luck seemed to be good. The paralysis effect was triggered. Scyther stiffened and suffered the damage of Dragon Rage head-on, showing pain on its face.

"Okay! Dratini, continue using Dragon Rage!"

Lily's face beamed with joy; the tactics had worked!

The speed of the Scyther is very annoying. If there is no way to solve this problem, it will be difficult for the Dratini to hit it, so she took the risk of letting the Dratini use Thunder Wave at close range. The only reason why she waited until now to challenge the scyther was just so she could level up her dratini to level 15 to learn the move Dragon Rage.

Dragon Rage deals fixed damage, which might be useless at other times, but in this case, it does more damage than anything else Dratini can use.

"Scyther! What's the matter with you?" Seeing that Scyther was being attacked head-on, the man panicked, ran forward subconsciously, and actually helped Scyther block a Dragon Rage.

"...It's a good thing this is a game," John secretly sighed.

The man's body was hit head-on by Dragon Rage, but there was no bloody scene. As if the signal was suddenly disconnected, his body disappeared for a short time and then reappeared.

"Is this a foul?"

In the crowd, someone whispered about the rules of the battle.

The first rule of Pokémon battles is that you can't attack the trainer, but this kind of behaviour can't be blamed on the Pokémon.

At this time, the way Scyther looked at the trainer seemed to change, and John felt that it was more and more like a guy wearing a hat in his memory.

"Hey~" Scyther landed in front of the trainer and touched him lightly with both arms.

"You're alright, great."

Unbeknownst to the trainer the friendship level between both of them had just increased.

The friendship settings given by the system are amazing. For example, there are some Pokemon that need to rely on friendship to evolve, and the bonds required for MEGA evolution can be regarded as a kind of friendship. The most intuitive is whether Pokémon listens to the trainer's command.

Although the Scyther just now could listen to the trainer's orders, it obviously fought more according to its own ideas.

"Hey, let's Continue."

Lily looked at John and nodded secretly. She didn't want this battle to end because of a foul.

"Can we really continue?" The trainer was a little surprised, obviously knowing that he had fouled.

"It's okay, it's not a formal competition; we're just sparring," Lily replied with a smile. "And my Dratini hasn't defeated your Scyther yet."

"Woo~"

Dratini cried out, full of fighting spirit.

"Okay! Scyther, let's continue! Go up and slash him!"

"..."

Hmm... At this moment, John always felt that the Scyther staggered.

The speed of the Scyther in the paralyzed state was greatly reduced, and the speed of the Dratini could already catch up with it, not to mention that the paralyzed state might be triggered on the Scyther at any time.

"Dratini, keep using Dragon Rage!"

Lily directed the Dratini to do the same. With the current speed of the Scyther, it was difficult to dodge, but the distance between it and the Dratini was always getting closer.

Now the only chance of winning is for the Scyther to get close to Dratini, as its current level does not have long-range attack moves.

"It's almost there, Scyther, come on!" There was an audience cheering on Scyther.

"Dratini, go, go, go! Defeat it!" Similarly, supporters also appeared on the side of Dratini, and the charm of Pokémon battles had begun to show.

"Hey!"

"Okay! Slash him!"

After dodging four or five rounds of Dragon Rage in a row, Scyther finally pushed forward to the Dratini out of breath, taking a lot of damage from the aftermath of Dragon Rage.

"Is this... Slash? Or Fury Cutter?"

In front of the Dratini, the Scyther raised the scythe blade, and a light flashed on the scythe blade, as if it had been suddenly sharpened, and the cold light was even worse.

"It also has the Swarm ability!"

John was slightly surprised. This young man was very lucky. Maybe it was because he kept saying "slash him," and then the Scyther learned a new move?

In addition, Scyther had consumed a lot of stamina before, which directly triggered the Swarm ability. Even if Dratini is at full health, it could be taken down in a single hit.

"Get out of the way, Dratini!"

Lily obviously noticed this too, her expression changed, "No, it's too late!"

"Dratini, use Wrap!"

The scyther's attack fell, and the Dratini advanced instead of retreating. Its body wrapped around the Scyther like a snake, and its long body stuck to the position of the scythe.

The next moment, the binding effect was triggered, taking away the last trace of the Scyther's strength.

"So close."

Lily breathed a sigh of relief and smiled.

In the arena, the Dratini was still scratched by the last blow of the Scyther, but because the Dratini finally attacked forward, it was difficult for the scythe blade of the Scyther to retract, and it did not cause fatal damage.

"Scyther!"

This time, the trainer ran forward in a hurry, but this was in the Pokémon Center, and Chansey quickly came over and lifted the Scyther up.

"It's done!"

John put away the camera and smiled slightly, and with the accident in the middle, this promotional material is perfect!

After defeating the Scyther, Lily didn't intend to continue the fight, so she recalled the Dratini and sent it to recover.

The audience next to her had a look of envy, and many people asked for Lily's contact information requests boy theyne were rejected by her.

After getting back the Dratini, John and Lily went offline.

And after they went offline, the Pokémon Center seemed to be ignited by the battle between Dratini and Scyther, and there were long queues in each battle field.
