Chapter 11: Official Launch

"What about the next update?" John suddenly thought of a critical question.

Now that the first generation of Pokémon has been created, John needs to continue designing the subsequent Pokémon.

The basic framework is complete, and future updates could include MEGA evolution, Z moves, and primarily new Pokémon.

The success of Pokémon hinges on its inherent appeal. Subsequent updates will likely boost its popularity, but the first generation alone seems too limited, especially without John's favorite, MEGA evolution. John would be very disappointed if the right to update is taken away later by the government.

Fortunately, this concern was unfounded. Michael replied, "Don't worry, your mother has already secured the copyright for Pokémon for you. You will be responsible for future updates. Even the government can't hand it over to someone else without your consent. Can you still design more Pokemon?"

"That's good to hear," John breathed a sigh of relief. "I have a lot of ideas that haven't been designed yet."

"A lot... how many?" Michael asked.

"There are probably a few hundred more, plus some new moves and evolutions."

"...Hundreds?" Michael's hand holding the teacup trembled slightly. "Are you serious?"

"Brother, no way, you have hundreds more to make?" Lily looked at John in surprise and excitement, her eyes sparkling.

Adam's cold face remained indifferent, but the corners of his mouth twitched slightly. He stayed silent.

John unintentionally boasted, but it was the truth.

"You... okay, it's good that you can continue designing," Michael managed to say, still processing the sheer number.

Grace, hearing this, rolled her eyes at Michael, "John's cleverness comes from me! You've made Adam so dull that he hasn't even found a girlfriend yet."

Adam, listening to this, twitched his eyelids and looked down silently.

"Alright, alright, whatever you say," Michael said helplessly, thinking about how he had always wanted John to follow in their professional footsteps.

Afterward, they all chatted casually before going their separate ways.

...

Meanwhile, online discussions about the "Second World" update were heating up.

This update was a significant event in "Second World," with each city's update differing.

The Pokémon designed by John would be updated in Seaside City, while other cities would feature work from other virtual game designers.

"It's finally going to be updated! Woohoo, new jobs, here I come!"

"Come on!"

"Our game announcement mentioned updating a pet called Pokémon, along with trainers and breeders. I wonder what that's all about."

With little official information released beforehand, everyone was speculating.

"Pets? Are we all going to be pet caretakers? This sounds ridiculous!"

"Honestly, it's a bit worrying. I heard our Seaside City update is managed by a new virtual game designer. I don't know what to expect."

"Yeah, I don't know either. Don't we have several level 7 or 8 virtual game designers in Seaside City? Why is a newcomer handling this?"

"Heh, do you know who this newcomer is? He's the son of our top leader in Seaside City."

"From the(family name) family? Isn't Adam the head of the virtual game department? Why is he stepping in?"

"Who told you it was Adam? There's another son, John, who just graduated."

"Oh, great. I feel like we're doomed. Such an important task given to a novice, sigh."

Driven by speculation, the conversation shifted from discussing Pokémon to questioning John's qualifications.

...

Three days later, after a brief service suspension, Pokémon went online on schedule.

In Seaside City, players initially didn't notice any novel changes. Soon, however, many spotted signs with red and white balls and buildings resembling buttons scattered around the city.

At the same time, everyone received a system message:

[Please go to the Pokémon Center to receive your initial Pokémon and Pokédex with your ID card!]

"Pokémon Center?"

"It really is a pet thing, isn't it?"

Some people, driven by curiosity, followed the map to the nearest Pokémon Center, opening the door to a new world.

Many others, influenced by preconceived notions about pets, ignored the message and continued with their activities. They would regret this decision later when they saw others engaging in Pokémon battles.

John had revised the initial plan, abandoning the idea of giving away the starter trio initially. Instead, players used their ID cards to receive Pokémon from the Pokémon Center.

The number and types of available Pokémon were limited. For example, there were few Squirtles and Charmanders, while common Pokémon like Rattata and Caterpie were more plentiful.

Those who arrived early had the privilege of choosing their Pokémon first, while those who came later could only pick from the remaining ones.

Chapter 12: The first reactions

"Are these the Pokémon for this update?"

At the Pokémon Center in Seaside City, a crowd gathered. Some were merely curious, while others were avid pet enthusiasts.

However, the information displayed by the Pokémon Center left many perplexed.

"Is that a mouse?" A person exclaimed, pointing at Rattata's holographic projection. "And this, a massive caterpillar??? With horns?!"

"There are caterpillars with leaves on their heads!"

Caterpie and Weedle lay displayed, intriguing and confusing onlookers.

"And bats!" Another person gestured to Zubat.

"What's with this giant praying mantis? But it's oddly charming!" Scyther's appearance still held a certain allure.

"What's John thinking? Are these supposed to be pets???" Someone complained.

Listening to the comments and complaints from afar, John's head throbbed. There were plenty of attractive Pokémon!

He had come to witness how players reacted to Pokémon while also selected his own Pokémon.

Though not fully prepared to immerse himself in the game, claiming Pokémon was still a necessity.

The scene unfolded just as he envisioned. While not everyone came, those who did lingered, engrossed in learning more about Pokémon from the illustrated booklets.

Their curiosity sparked a budding interest in Pokémon, often the first step towards affection.

Of course, apart from those frantically pushing without gaining anything.

Within the Pokémon Center, several battlefields were set up, and players were already engaging in battles using basic moves.

Hit, hit... hit.

In one arena, a long-haired girl in a purple knee-length skirt dominated the field. That was Lily.

Leveraging her status as a private server player and using the information given by John to her, Lily exploited these new players to gain experience, drawing a crowd to watch her battles.

Many who thought themselves clever went to acquire Pokémon like hers, only to be disappointed.

For Lily had chosen a snake-like Pokémon with a dark blue back, a light white belly, and white fins on either side of its head—a Dratini!

Among the Pokémon distributed, aside from the rare starter trio, John introduced only one Dratini and one Scyther.

Scyther was added for its strength, while Dratini was added solely for its rarity.

Though Dratini itself wasn't that overpowered, its final evolution, the quasi-legendary Dragonite, held immense power.

Among the 151 first-generation Pokémon, only Mewtwo surpassed it in rank, showcasing its might.

John, on the other hand, opted for Pikachu.

However, this Pikachu was perhaps too adorable. John thought that he wouldn't be able to evolve this Pikachu into Raichu because of its cuteness.

"Pika? PikaPika"

Perhaps sensing John's hesitation, Pikachu perched on his shoulder softly cooed, nuzzling its soft fur against his ear in agreement.

"It's up to you! Scyther!"

Meanwhile, the Scyther that John had been observing was finally chosen by someone captivated by its appearance.

John's gaze followed the person, observing as they released Scyther from its Poké Ball and scanned it with their newly acquired Pokedex.

"So you're Scyther, I can see that you are as dashing as me!"

"Scythe!"

Scyther raised its scythes in a fighting stance.

"You think we're equally dashing, don't you? That's why I chose you!"

John: "...I think it just wants to fight."

John couldn't resist intervening, reminding the person just in time.

"Huh? Is that so?"

The person looked at the serious expression of Scyther, thanking John, "Alright! Let's battle!"

With enthusiasm, they led Scyther to the battlefield.

"Scythe!"

"Let's go and battle scyther!"

John observed that not only was the scyther strong, but even his new trainer was pretty good at directing in battles. Both of them soon defeated all of their opponents. Then the real game began as now it was time for the battle between Scyther and Lily's Dragonite.

"Now, the real show begins!"

With the entrance of Scyther, the arena gained another warrior. John brought Pikachu to watch discreetly, activating the camera in the process.

Scyther, specially chosen by John to promote Pokémon, needed to engage in a captivating battle for optimal promotion. And what better opponent than Lily?

Though Dratini and Sycther were currently similar in terms of power, but Lily's command prowess far surpassed that of these novices, making for an engaging battle!

Observing from the sidelines, John couldn't shake off the feeling of déjà vu, almost like seeing a familiar figure wearing a hat.

As the battle unfolded, John found himself lost in thought.
