Chapter 85: Assassination (1)

In the dark expanse of the night, a silhouette of a person crawled swiftly on the marshy land towards the wall of the wooden warehouse.

Apparently, even after he finished putting the turbine together, Virtya didn't chose to return back to Whiten in his palace so that he could sleep, instead, he decided to spent the rest of the night in the warehouse. It had only remained less than 4 hours for the night to end and pave the way for the day, thus, Virtya didn't see the need of going back to Whiten, he would do that when he finished installing the turbine where it was needed because it had only remained a few steps to finalize installing this rotary machine.

The assassin had taken his time to wait and just like Virtya, he didn't sleep as he awaited for a chance that he could use to infiltrate into the warehouse and that chance he had gotten it after waiting for too long.

Currently, the assassin was moving on the marshy land at the back of the warehouse where he couldn't be seen clearly. Previously, he had been lying close to the front of the warehouse where he viewed the fixing of the turbine but he didn't manage to get a chance to infiltrate into the warehouse and that was why he was here.

"These knights of Azuhai are so lax. Are these the people that king Virtya is dependent on for his protection?" The assassin murmured to himself while shaking his head. However, he didn't continue to wallow about the flaw of the guards as that was not his job at this place.

The heavy rains had dwindled a little and it was only the drizzle that dominated. Nonetheless, the knights had became too lax and some of the patrolling knights had reduced their movements considerably , there were some who were simply telling each others stories and lies, there were others who were snoring as they had already surrendered to their drowsiness and there was a small group that had dissolved to loneliness and absentmindedness.

The active and serious knights were so few in that they could be counted with fingers but the assassin was not targeting them because his eyes had fixed on one particular knight.

The assassin had hid himself in the marshy land behind the warehouse. At the starting of nightfall, this place was being heavily patrolled by the knights which made it hard for the assassin to make any progress but this time, it was only one knight who was patrolling here as the others had maybe gone to sleep or they were now engaged in other stuffs like narrating each other some stories.

Nonetheless, even if this single knight was patrolling, his eyes had dark circles as if he had not slept for days but that was not supposed to be so because these knights were supposed to shift with each other for this patrolling role. Or maybe, this knight was forced to work the entire night so as to cover for his fellow. The assassin could only come to this conclusion which made him to disdain Virtya's knights even more.

Squirming on the marshy plain like a snake, the assassin was so fast and he didn't make any sound as if squirming was his forte. Between his jaws, he was holding a long sharp metal spike that he procured from his work place.

One should know that the assassin didn't come with his weapons at this place as he wanted to stay low and remain undetected.

Lightning flashed and encompassed the entire site in a warm light that made the night to turn into a day for mere seconds but this timely flash didn't enable the sleep deprived knight to realize a thing, that was until he heard an almost inaudible sound of metal clanking upon a rock not too far away from him.

"Who is that? Show your faces!" The knight hollered uncertaintly with a cowardly voice as he illuminated with his torch the place where he had heard the sound coming from.

'Fuck! How can I make such a stupid mistake! My reputation as a top assassin can't be tarnished like that. Damn!' The assassin cursed in his mind. The spike that he had previously held between his jaws laid a metre away from him, it had mistakenly dislodged itself from the grip of his teeth and fell on top of a protruding rock. Even if where the assassin was lying was marshy, there were also some rocks that had protruded from the impermeable layer below and the assassin just chanced to mistakenly be close to one of them when his grip on the metal spike loosened.
